Historic lowest price for this great display. Been using one since launch and it’s been fantastic. Looks to be about $240 cheaper than the next lowest price (based on a quick Google search).

  • Being waiting for this for quite a long time. Pulled the trigger immediately. Other than not being OLED, this monitor simply has no rival at its level. Brightness, colour, refresh rate, response time … and it serves as thunderbolt 3 hub. Surely the full package.

As a current 48c1 user, I feel the size is way too big for sitting less than 1m. Many small issues too, such as have to manually turn on every time / cannot put anything in front otherwise blocking viewing (basically it has to sit on the desk, otherwise you have to look up to reach the top). At the same price level, 48c1 might be the sexy choice but I would say a "traditional" curved ultra wide is the safer choice.

    • This LG38 vs the Alienware 38?

      • Specs look very similar, including only 1 DisplayPort input (which is a PITA on the AW!)

        From the Rtings review…

The LG 38WN95C-W and the Dell AW3821DW are each very good overall monitors. They're both 38 inch models with a 3840x1600 resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. The LG is mainly designed for office use, but it's slightly better than the Dell for gaming because it has a quicker response time, resulting in clearer motion. It's also slightly better for HDR gaming because it gets much brighter in HDR. However, if you have an NVIDIA graphics card, the Dell may be a better choice for you because it has native G-SYNC support.

      • I believe the Dells don't have an sRGB mode, so if you want the option of accurate colours outside of HDR content then go with the LG. If you don't mind the highly saturated look the Dell is also a good option.

  • Don't forget there's the LG 38GN950. Probably won't come down to this pricing.

Wouldn't you just go for the Alienware at this price point? Surely the QD-OLED provides significant benefits over this in the monitor experience. Of course you will be missing out on USB-C but if you're not using that, wouldn't this be a better option?

    • The Alienware QD-OLED is smaller at 34" and has less vertical resolution i.e. it's 3440x1440 (21:9).
This LG ultrawide is 38" and has extra vertical resolution 3840x1600 (21:10). This is a unique combination and hard to find. I've been using one for about a year and notice a difference over standard 34" ultrawides.

I picked up one of these in March for $1957 using one of the various Afterpay codes. As an owner of a Samsung CRG9 also, I actually prefer the 21:9 aspect ratio for games, it just works with more games without having to fluff around with config edits and POV struggles. 1600 height is great for feed scrolling, and a noticeable jump from 1440 (similar to 1080 vs 1440 perception wise despite the smaller leap).

If I were to have made the purchase now however, I'd definitely be chasing the AW QD-OLED simply for the contrast. This panel is great, but for the same or similar price you can pickup current gen tech with G-Sync Ult & 175Hz refresh, as long as the 3440x1440 res is not a downgrade for your use case and you don't require Thunderbolt.

So the Dell AW is coming in at $1624.35 including shipping…

  • would this be better for a bit more?? (just work stuff, no gaming is my use case)

    https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-ultrasharp-38-curved-us…

seeing this dell also has ethernet built-in. can then really reduce the setup to just 1 USB-C cable for everything

EDIT: even cheaper than this LG here, https://www.umart.com.au/product/dell-38in-ultrasharp-wqhd-i…

      Advantages to both I guess…

      • 60Hz on the Dell vs 144Hz on the LG
      • 8/5ms GTG on the Dell vs 1ms on the LG
      • RJ45 on the Dell vs Thunderbolt 3 on the LG
      • 90 watt PD on the Dell vs (up to) 94 watt PD on the LG

Likely just comes down to what floats your boat.

  • Been using since release, be warned that it has no auto input switcher

Constant switching between laptop and desktop, manual change everytime.

    Other than that, great display.

  • This seems to be the only option at the moment
    - ultrawide
    - 144hz for desktop via dp
    - charging laptop for work

Thunderbolt 3 might be a little bit overkill for laptop - wouldn't expect laptop to go above 60hz under this resolution.

    Pulling trigger tomorrow

  • I've been working on a 34" the past 4-5 years. Would upgrading to 38" be that noticeable do you think or would it better to spend the extra for a 40"? I can't find any this size around where I live to compare :(

    • +1

I have a 34" Phillips 346B1C at work and a 38" Dell AW3821DW - the differences are negligible as there is more real estate to run multiple applications when WFH. When gaming (well… before my laptop died), the differences are noticeable (we have a NUC at work for our hour long lunch breaks).

My wife on the other hand has upgraded from a 35" LG 35WN75C-B to a 49" Dell U4919DW as her WFH monitor due to using spreadsheets all the time.

Keep an eye out on Ozbargain because I picked up the 38" Dell when it was $1299 during the ebay sale a while back. I'd say it's worth it but I'd probably look for one that has USB-C support.

  • Back to $2006 :(
