Anyone Heading into GraysOnline Arndell Park Car Yard in The Next Couple of Days?

I'm wondering if anyone is dropping into the car auction yard in the next few days - there is a Peugeot 307 CC I am interested in, but would like to know condition of tyres; it pisses me off that, unlike some other auction sites they give you no indication of tyre condition - When you consider this can add an easy $600-$800 bucks to the cost it is significant.

Looks like there's some tread left on them in the pictures - looks to be more than half the tread left.

Honestly, the tyres would be the last of my concerns buying a sight unseen second hand car.

    • Looks like, but pics can be deceiving.

lets do a modicum of research here…

this car uses 205/50 R17… (source: redbook)

this size tyre is anywhere from $80-$120 with that being a hankook kumho

$150+ for a continental or something really nice

now for a cheapo shit runabout i guess sub $400 a set would be fine

this whole thread is about a coupla hundred dollars???? come on son

        • -1

FURTHER you want someone to go there look at a car and tell you the tyres arent bad so you dont have to spend a few hundreds dollars… on a piece of shit 15 y.o. french car thats a CONVERTIBLE… and you're allegedly a mechanic… good lord let us pray none of us ever send a car to you…

name makes sense, pass me the Glenlivet…

Assume everything needs replacing and bid accordingly.

It's french junk. The tyres will be the least of your issues. The reason it's at auction is because even the dodgiest wholesalers and used car salesmen don't want to touch it.

Source: wife had a manual 307 hatch in the mid 2000's. Nice to drive, handled really well but as soon as that 3 year warranty expired the car got sold.

You can do a partial check online at Service NSW, the rego is BBW85Y. Shows its registered until 5th of June

    Vehicle history report

For just $23.00 a vehicle history report will provide further details about this vehicle, including whether the vehicle has been written-off in NSW or interstate.

    Good luck mon ami..

    • +9

For just $23.00 a vehicle history report

WTF? No, for "free" you can do a PPSR check which will tell you the exact same thing as a $23 "vehicle history report" from one of those sites dedicated to ripping naive/gullible people off.

      • The $23 was from the NSW government service site - not from a third party site. But sorry if I have offended the Ozbargain expert mechanics…

    • No need, Auctions are required to divulge WOVR record.

Who cares about the tyres, honestly. It's a heap of shit and at the $9 asking price, its still $10 too much.

    I think the Grays experience is summed up best with;

    • Paint & Panel: Good
    • Exterior: scratches on left back quarter panal

The paint is shocking and the clear coat is lifting off it everywhere. Not to mention it has a Peugeot badge on the front and the rear. 168k km on the clock and a shady looking service history and at this point you are worried about the tyres?

I hope you buy it, because we dont have quite enough "I bought this Peugeot from an auction online and now it needs $4,000 worth of repairs and the auction place wont answer my calls for cOmPeNsAtiOn!!1!!!11!"

InB4: Nubzy turns up to tell us how reliable these cars are and how it won World Engine of The Year from 1903 until 2019 and how it's no more expensive to repair than a Hyundai if you just take it to a Pug specalist

Lol. I bought mine from an auction house (fixed price though), guess what, hasn't cost me anything outside of routine maintenance..

I will agree that the era OP is looking at was not the best for reliability, but you could do a lot worse and it all hinges on the service history anyway..

    • With a Peugeot, tyres will be the least of OP's concerns!

      • -2

Rubbish. They are good cars when looked after..

        • +1

You've been a very avid pusher of the Peugeot brand on these forums for quite some time. Perhaps it's a French pride thing, perhaps it's something else - I don't know.

So when even you're willing to admit it's "not the best", I can only assume that what you really mean is, it's a piece of sh.t! lol

        • +1

Think the key to that statement is ‘when looked after’. Buying at auction isn’t a good sign for that.

          • @Euphemistic: Depends. Mine was ex-fleet, owned by a small business and immaculately maintained and in mint condition. New brakes done just prior to sale. I take very good care of it too, it only goes to mechanics who specialise in Peugeot. Oil is slightly more expensive, but aside from that no worse to run than my previous Japanese car.

            • @nubzy: Nice sample size of 1 car. You got extremely lucky on that purchase.

              • @[Deactivated]: Not really, ex fleet and fixed price from pickles/Manheim are generally a pretty safe buy.

Grays however, are the bottom of the barrel. I've seen cars they describe as "good", they are not.

  • Thanks for your input. It is only as a cheap runabout, doesnt need to look good. I am a highly competent mechanic and have no problems with it being a peugeot.

I have bought heaps of vehicles at auction, I know the pitfalls.

As long as it runs, and is capable of short trips around town thats all I need in this case. I couldnt give a s$%t if it packs it in after a year or two or if the clearcoat is crappy.

So, if anyone would like to be helpful, here is your chance.

      $800 tyres on a junker?

      • I think he was including rims, brakes, full service, paint protection, tinted windows, new stereo, and 12 mths rego

        • Definitely not a full tank of fuel. No one can afford that.

    • well as know the deal.

I would of helped, pre covid I would regularly go there but nothing of interest since then, just trash or way too expensive.

    • +1

If you have often bought from auction why are you worried about the tyres? Just factor in replacing them.

    • +8

with that shitty attitude, im sure the ozb community is lining up to help you

      • +1

        Or bidding against him?

        • +1

How much could you make from buying this, and blowing it up/crushing it/crashing it etc on YouTube?

  • +1

A Peugeot 307 from grays, what could possibly go wrong? Grays are terrible at reporting condition, if they've mentioned "scratches on the rear", it must be absolutely terrible. It will likely have mechanical issues as well.

The tyres are the least of your concerns on that pus bucket.

OPs next post : "Help, bought a car from auction and the convertible top doesn't work and the gearbox is broken, how do I sue grays?"

No need to read any of the preceding commentary, just gotta show yourself to be the Alpha.

      • +2

Alfa mechanic any good for Peugeot work?

        • Nah. Italians and French don’t get along so well.

  • +7

C'mon guys, the dude is just asking if anyone who will already be in the area could have a quick look at this particular car. He has shown experience in this area already and is just after a bit of assistance.

He's been a member of this site for 8 years, not 8 minutes, just try to be a bit more reasonable.

    • +1

He's been a member of this site for 8 years, not 8 minutes

I've seen threads from long-time members who got scammed after doing a bank transfer for an item selling on gumtree/facebook.

I think OP might've saved himself from some of these comments if he told everyone he was an experienced mechanic in the original post.

    • +3

Fair point, and the tyres are important as they at least won't be manufactured by Peugeot!

  • +3

no i wont be in the area..

  • OP, I totally understand the appeal of having a particular model of car. I can't help you with inspecting the tyres, though pic #4 of the rears seems to show about 50-70% wear. Here are some other things I noticed:

    1. What's that round mark on the driver's side rear? (actually, seems to be on both sides)
    2. Is that rear parking sensor (second in from the driver's side) pushed in?
    3. Boy, that's quite a scuff on driver's side front bumper.
    4. Why is that key bent? (pic 21)
    5. That's a worn steering wheel - I wonder where the wear comes from? (pic 12) I guess a steering wheel cover would cover that up.

Anyway, if it's what you want, I hope your bid is successful OP!

  • Can we all just agree that if you but a Peugeot you are a maniac.

  • I always see bargains there but by the time they are auctioned off they aren't anywhere near that price anymore. They use to give condition reports stating brake and tyre wear etc….

Spare key missing for this one is another few hundred dollars :), nothing compared to costs of losing last key!
