$182 a month ago, been dropping all month. Honey says lowest price in 57 days.

Might drop more but under $150 was good enough for me. $29.80 a TB.

Model: WDBU6Y0050BBK-WESN

OfficeWorks has a 5TB WD portable for $143 but no stock near me and can't order online. YMMV (I punched in capital cities, some stores have "limited stock").

    • For gaming I'd go the WD Black. Anything else save $20.

My use case is an rsync backup script once a week and then unplugged the rest of the time.

edit: This is from the Amazon reviews:

Just note that there is nothing special about this item that makes it a gaming drive. It is is standard 5400 rpm drive, inside an enclosure. Most modern portable drives support USB 3. Do not purchase this expecting extra performance for gaming.

Typically the difference is that the WD Blacks have a much longer warranty. Or at least that was the case a ways back.

        • P10 - 3 yr

          WD port - 2yr

        5400 RPM

        Eww. What were they thinking.

        • It’s clearly enough.

            @Ulysses31: Enough for what?

@Tacooo: Cheap bulk storage, where capacity/price is the priority, and regular fast access isn't.

        • 'Laptop' drives are almost always 5400rpm from my experience

@outlander: Laptop drives are almost always SSDs these days from my experience.

If shucking is your thing, avoid WD portable drives, as they are USB only, no SATA connection inside.
The Seagate 5TB portables are showing as $169 atm, but can be had cheaper from time to time.

Yep I'm waiting on the Seagate drives to drop. Need at least 4 to shuck.

    • And come with rescue service.

      • Not once they're shucked.

  • A good deal for a 4TB portable drive is $99. How is this a good deal?

  • Ill probably be cheaper this month with end-of-year sales

And as above stated common normally you can get 4 terabyte for 100 bucks

    • Yes! 4tb for $100 or less is my sweetspot before pulling the trigger on these

      • This price usually happens on the desktop drive. Just got a Seagate 4tb expansion portable from JB hi-fi for $113.05 with today's 5% coupon.

        • Use the $10 free voucher for $109.

I last bought one of these for : $154.34

Why are they still making these without USB-C ports?

    • Those are old models. Also, USB-C is a few cents more expensive than USB 3.0 to the manufacturer.
