I've been looking around for a new router, and based on my research this relatively new ASUS offering is pretty well featured and performs well. I couldn't find any previous deals for this; the base price is $799 (which should never be paid), so this probably won't be the best price, but as far as I can tell this is the best price it's been recently.

  • Why they still release WIFi6 router since WiFi 6E is available, and such hefty price tag….

    • +3

WiFi 6E price tag is heftier

      • But this is a NEW product with higher price, just get a cheap AX6000 router with a 2.5Gbe switch, as for cheaper wifi6e product, check with TPLink

As is always the way with technology in general (but especially Wi-Fi), adoption of a new standard takes time - I don't think I even have any 6E capable devices in my home. I think Australia only approved 6E 6ghz a month or so ago in fact? But your point is still valid, and this isn't a cheap Wi-Fi 6 router. For me personally, I live in a unit so don't need mesh for coverage, but I do need a router that can handle all the smart internet connected gadgets I've accumulated over the years, plus give my PC a stable Wi-Fi connection since I can't hard wire it. I am aware this particular router is overkill for that, but I'd rather overkill than underkill.

TBH when it comes to WIFI, if you're one or two generations behind, it's not going to cause you much trouble. Given that the bottleneck will always be the actual line speed in Australia rather than the Wifi, you might as well save a bit of money now, and upgrade in a few years, rather than spending even more now for something that you'll not get any benefit from.

      • +1

That's true if you're only interested in browsing the net on your devices but for when you're sharing stuff between your own devices (using Plex for example), having good WIFI speed between your devices would be nice

Also an added plus with WiFI 6e is that it's working on a separate spectrum so there's less congestion until every ones onboard

        • +3

Well, sure. But I've been streaming 4K video on a 802.11n then an 802.11AC router for years no with little to no problems, so unless you're an extreme-use case that is streaming ten or hundreds of gigabits of data per second, going from Wifi 6 to 6E is not going to offer any major benefits, and if you are said extreme-use case, odds are the price is going to be a non-issue no matter how much it is.

          • @TheRealCJ: Good point. Trying to think of a current use case that requires it and the closest would be Steam Link or something but even then your encoding/decoding hardware is probably going to bottleneck it before the network speed becomes a bottleneck

How many 6e devices do you have???

      • The question is more how many 6E devices will you have that take advantage of 6E?

eg: Future VR headsets, laptop upgrades, etc.

        • And what will 6E offer you with these future devices?

That you can't do on 6? Or 5 as above.

The last thing you do is early adopt a new standard. Been burnt myself.

          • @scuderiarmani: Speed, lower latency, less congestion as there's a new spectrum.

A few of those things will be useful for VR in particular. It's already been out in other countries for a while AFAIK, so you're not exactly an early adopter.

With it approved now, I'd seriously consider a 6E device over 6 especially in this price range.

    • The Asus ROG GT-AX6000 packs a punch 2.0Ghz Quad Core 64-bit CPU, 256 MB Flash, 1 GB RAM, Dual 2.5Gbps WAN/LAN Ports, 2.4 GHz 4 x 4 and 5.0 GHz 4 x 4. If you're running 20+ clients, a home server, Wireguard VPN, Diversion (router based ad blocking) etc. this router is the current consumer king.

If you don't have one of these devices you don't need WiFi 6E (07/06/2022)

    Cheaper from Amazon UK

    Check for global warranty tho

    • +1

I read on here that UK imported Wi-Fi products are lower powered than the Aus equivalent, but maybe fixing that is as simple as flashing it with Aus firmware? Either way good find!

  • As mentioned, this was released a couple of months ago with a $799 price tag with a free cable (wow! Not lol) which is WAY too much for this, given there are cheaper options out there. This special price is still too high in my opinion. Been keeping an eye on this for a while but not cheap enough to pull the trigger.

Yep agreed. My current AC88U is starting to show its age, sometimes requiring multiple restarts a week and occasionally just dropping out completely, so I wanted to get an upgrade sooner rather than later given how much I'm working from home these days. If not for that I'd probably have just waited for this or an equivalent to get cheaper.

      • I reckon a nighthawk might offer better options and same speeds for cheaper, although they can be expensive too lol. I'm after a router to hook up 2× gaming rigs at the opposite end of our house. Will use a ethernet cable to connect both rigs but need the router to connect to the wifi to nbn dooby thingy

      • Really? My 88U has been solid, running Asuswrt-Merlin firmware.

        • Up until recently my AC88U has also been rock solid on merlin firmware, super impressive actually. Only time it had any issues was my own fault - originally set it up inside a closed cabinet with poor airflow, so it would overheat and the 2.4ghz band would randomly shut down and all my smart gadgets would all go offline. After moving it to an open area its been very stable until recently, where I've noticed randomly the internet will just drop off and I wont be able to log into the router until I hard reset it with a power cycle. Tried updating and downdating firmware but that didn't change much. Was hoping to keep it going until 6E becomes more affordable but with the amount of time I spend working from home it was starting to get annoying so I decided it was time.

Better off getting a decent mesh set up for the price.

Single routers, unless in a very small home (1-2 bedroom single level) are borderline pointless imo.

  • This or the Synology RT6600ax?

I think the Synology is slightly better and cheaper but if you want to extend later on to a mesh wifi, you need to stick with Synology.

    • Likewise here with AiMesh.

      • true but Asus releases routers more often / probably more reliable in this regard.

        • Wouldn't it be nice and much simpler to have a single brand of router/network system that works flawlessly since they're all the same brand. Will certainly help with drop-outs and configs. One can dream lol

Not going to lie, this review did kind of push me over the line on this purchase (apart from wanting to swap out my current router sooner rather than later).

Follow up for anyone interested: I purchased this and set it up, only to find that my upload speeds were terrible - I get 100/40 FTTB NBN at my unit and usually get anywhere between 32-36mbps upload during non peak times on Wi-Fi, but with this router best I could manage was 10mbps very rarely, but mostly between 2-5mbps… Using the Merlin firmware I could do speed tests on the router itself and they were reporting 35-37mbps upload so I know the issue was not with my ISP/modem. After struggling with it for a large chunk of my weekend (tried all sorts of things, including disabling Wi-Fi 6, swapping channels, turning on/off 160mhz, various different firmware versions with factory settings restoration between changes each time) I decided to just return it and get something else. A shame as it is a very impressive piece of hardware, I suspect maybe I got a dud or something. I'm fully aware that this tier of Wi-Fi hardware is overkill for my needs (my current AC88U is already borderline overkill) but I guess I'm just a hardware enthusiast who can't help himself and wants new toys to play with…

    • It seems you're not alone: https://www.reddit.com/r/ASUSROG/comments/tbbty0/comment/i3k…
Most likely a bug & resolved with a firmware update.

      • Yeah, I stumbled on that reddit post too while trying to search for an answer. Unfortunate, I was considering hanging onto it and waiting for a fix which I'm sure would come eventually (assuming I didn't have a dud), but I thought since I got it from Amazon and returns are hassle free I was better off just returning it for now and getting something else. Everything else about it was awesome and I would have been a very happy purchaser if not for that one issue, unfortunately it is a bit of a deal breaker especially for working from home with large files syncing over dropbox etc.
