Wow actually feels like a gift from coles. Bunnings and officeworks are never discounted.

Just when I thought I didn't need to spend more money…

  • +1

Nice. What should I buy at OW for $100?

    • +1

Stuff that you can claim as a tax deduction

      • I wonder what would happen if the tax office audited your deductions and seen you paid with a gift card. Would you only be able to claim $90?

        • Not sure about deduction, but I managed to claim TRS for an ebay purchase MS Surface, paid with gift card.
The staff there told me it's the first time he processed an ebay claim
and he didn't care about my payment method.

        • ATO will see you paid $100 for the gift card in a receipt from Coles. That is all you need.

          • @netjock: I'm glad I'm not your accountant!

            • @Ozitravel: Why? $10 of Flybuys point don't matter in the scheme of things. There needs to be definite value, there is no guarantee you won't lose the points and no cash it in.

A lot worse happens. Like company directors who buy cars for their family for personal use and put it as legit company expense, some accountants actually tell you to do it.

Or company director income splitting and putting family members as employees when they do nothing.

I know small businesses that have only been checked by ATO only once in 20 years and that is for GST compliance.

  • Will OW let you redeem them for Apple Gift Cards, that's the big question LOL.

    • +1

@WookieMonster would know but assume probably not.

      • +2

Lol of course my name is brought up!

It's something I have not tried, because I stopped buying gift cards from Officeworks in 2020.

My guess is that it won't work, but it's definitely something worth trying.

        • +1

OW rejects using giftcards to pay for giftcards. (Including prepaid VISA/MC cards labeled as giftcards if they notice). Not sure if it's coded into the system but it's supposedly policy at OW.

(This has been my experience as of late 2020)

        • why did you stop buying from them?

          • @kalithreaver: I only ever went to Officeworks to get iTunes gift cards and get Officeworks to pricebeat whichever brick and mortar store was selling them at a discount. I last did that in 2020 when Coles was selling iTunes gift cards at a 20% discount, and I made sure to stock up. With iTunes gift cards being replaced with Apple gift cards in mid-2021, the upfront discounts dried up, so the pricebeats stopped too.

I now get discounted TCN/Ultimate gift cards and then walk over to JB Hi-Fi to purchase Apple gift cards at a discount.

            • +1

@WookieMonster: ok thanks. i thought maybe they did something dodgy. yeah its pretty disappointing that they stopped the good discounts like the 20% when they went to Apple cards. i should have stocked up.

    • LOL

    Very nice offer.

I'll be buying my OW card using a Hiver debit card for an extra 5% off on top.

  • +6

Just be aware that OW gift card is not redeemable online
    yes, in year 2022…
But I managed to order an online only item in their store with gift card last time
and their staffs were very helpful.
I am sure you can order over the phone as well.

  • +1

Can I buy with a Coles giftcard?

    • I’m 99% sure the answer is no, because I’m 99% sure Officeworks gift cards are issued by Coles Group.

You cannot purchase a gift card issued by Coles Group at Coles and pay for it using a gift card issued by Coles Group (e.g. Coles Group & Myer gift card, Coles gift card). If you try to do this, you’ll get an error message, even if you go to a serviced checkout and convince staff to let you try and do this.

      • +2

The system allows you to use Coles group card to purchase Coles group card at liquorland. It could help combine small amount gift cards into large amount gift cards.

        • +1

          That’s good to know.

My presumption is that it is the same at First Choice Liquor, because the POS systems at both retailers are almost identical.

When will the debacle of $250 Mastercard be back ? I am hanging for them.

    • Probably you need to wait for another two or three months.

      • +2

My current prediction is 1-3 weeks, because the deal this time last year was around late June.

The obvious thing is that past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance.

        • +1

          Sounds like a super firm!

    • $100/$250 card offer was on a few months ago, but for some reason only in the eastern states. The rest of Australia missed out.

    • +1

Coles must have read my comments on ozbargain 😎 Coles has now changed the packaging for Coles Mastercard which fully secure the all 4 edges.

Someone must have taken the weakness in their packaging seriously now. They should have come back and said thank you on ozbargain 😂

      • +1

It just means they've sold through existing stock and the number of false transaction claims have outweighed the cost of designing and manufacturing a new design.

        • +1

          Agree.
And perhaps that's why the monthly promotion is missing in May due to old stock is all cleared.

          • @TanedaR: So you think that the promos were designed to clear out the old stocks? Or is it that Coles does not want to run promos until all the old cards have been swapped out?

        • +1

what cost to design, they just need to pick up and Vanilla GC and order the same packaging design. Their new packaging design is exactly the same as Vanilla GC which include
          - Tamper proof on all 4 edges of the packaging
          - Barcode is printed 1/2 on the package and 1/2 on the actual GC in the cut-out window, this prevent someone swapped out the card inside or package with no card inside.

Now Only1Visa is the least secured one left that needs to be changed.

          • @samehada: You do realise that to replace existing stock there's a cost to recall, and create a new contract to fabricate and design new packaging (the packaging style might be similar or the same as an existing product but the branding and look won't be). These costs will not have been accounted for in the existing run written into the existing contract. (Yes the contract can be broken but there will be penalties, most likely not between Coles and Indue as that's most likely a marketing only contract, but rather between Indue and the printers of the cards). Not to mention the cost to fabricate the Vanilla GC is more expensive.

Also, don't forget to scan your FlyBuys card at Officeworks for the extra points (yeah, I realise a $100 purchase at Officeworks will only give you $0.50 worth of points but heh, this is OzBargain).

    • Note: this will trigger increase in min spend for bonus points.

      • But still worth getting the bonus points/spend on the card right? I know a lot of people comment that it affects future bonus offers but what’s the “way out” here?

  • +1

Get $2000 worth of gift cards (=1800$?)
wait for the new iPhone to come out
wait a for a deal that is at least 1$ cheaper than officeworks
get 5% off on the new iPhone
pay the remaining with gift cards (10%?)
boom? big savings on a new iPhone?

    • "Can only collect once per Flybuys account". Or do you have 20 Flybuys accounts?

      • +2

20 Flybuys cards should be minimum as an Ozbargainer

  • Are these just a rebranded Coles Group & Myer gift card in the same way that Woolworths group store gift cards are just rebranded WISH gift cards?

    • +5

I haven’t tried it myself, but I doubt Officeworks are just rebranded Coles Group & Myer gift cards, because Officeworks gift cards have different identification numbers1 when compared with other gift cards issued by Coles Group.

      Type Identification Number
      Officeworks 6273 4300
      Coles Group & Myer 6273 3500, 6273 3538
      Coles 6273 4010, 6273 4012
      Coles Groceries (aka Coles Groceries & Returns) 6273 4000, 6273 4005
      Coles flybuys2 6273 4070
      Coles Group 6277 9400

I would like to think that Coles was smart enough to code their POS systems to accept their gift cards with Coles as a participating retailer, but reject Kmart, Target, Officeworks, etc gift cards. However, I haven’t tested this myself, so it may be worth testing…

Btw, there are other gift cards issued by Coles Group that I haven’t included in the table above. I have included them all here.

In the case of Woolworths Group, the only Woolworths Group that is a rebranded WISH gift card is the EG / Caltex Woolworths gift card. You may get a gift card issuer that (for example) issues you a Woolworths Supermarket gift card that actually has the gift card number of a WISH gift card, but that is highly unusual, especially since Woolworths Supermarket gift cards have their own gift card numbers.

      1. The identification number is the first eight digits of the gift card number printed on the back of the gift card.

      2. AFAIK, you can only obtain this gift card if you redeem Flybuys points for a physical Coles gift card through the Flybuys Rewards Store.

  • I hate the way that you need to use the physical flybuys card to redeem the points

I applied the Coles Mastercard just for the purpose of redeeming flybuys points easily

    • +2

It is a bummer, but at least you know your flybuys dollars aren't being stolen like over at Woolies, where all you need is a barcode to redeem …

    • I think you can use your fb pts to redeem e-gc online. $50 min thou.

    • +2

I used to think/feel the same, but then I read this and thought that the inconvenience is worth it for the security of needing something physical in order to use the funds: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/272059

    • Same. Previous years when I've tried to redeem them, the cashier at Coles just smiles and says 'sorry, but you need the physical card' so matter of factly.
