Near Zero Cost Second Sim for Privacy?

hey, any advice for a second sim plan basically to only receive?

probably a stupid Q, but have had boost forever, and dont think about phone plans. recently house hunting on & off, and seeing 5-10 places on a weekend, results in weeks & weeks of harassment & all kinds of spam to my main mobile.

i'd like to have a second number to give to f-wits, when next starting up. i'd ideally like to have a sim dedicated to this, so i can literally ignore 99.9% of it and respond if and only if interested etc.

would literally be only for receiving texts/calls, and maybe the odd authentication sms txt etc.

what should i go for? have an iphone11 with esim, but also have a spare second handset id instead use looking at places etc.

Yep it's $5 in store or online.

      • …and cheap recharge, about $15 per year. Make sure your phone doesn't use it for data, just calls & sms.

        • Or don't recharge & just buy another starter pack for $5 every year.

Amaysim. I just checked, and there are currently two numbers that you could choose from that end with 39487 (ie; FWITS).

Start with https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/700894, turn off auto recharge, and after the 28 days are up, you'll still be able to receive calls on it for a least a year after activation. Throw $10 per year at it if you want to keep it on Amaysim PAYG, or port out and back to whatever suitable deal is available at the time.

    They also offer e-SIM.

    • nice! gold touch with the custom number LOL

I have an Optus esim just for this. I think it cost me a $1 for it as you just get it for a day and manage it all via the app. If I ever need it for anything I can charge it up for $7 for 7 days.

*just checked. You get a free 7 day trial. Google it.

  • Why not just block the numbers you're receiving too many calls/texts from?

    • not sure about android, but managing blocks on an iphone is absolutely r-tarded. even if it was simple and flawless, a block based approach is not suitable for this unfortunate situation, of having to rub shoulders with real estate scum. tracking blocks would make it even more of a nightmore, and also not how i wanna potentially spillover into managing phone use for all the other areas of my life, work/social etc.

        not sure about android

You just touch "block". Would've though apple was even easier given how everyone goes on about how user friendly and simple it is.

Not sure why you'd want to track blocks but if it doesn't work for you then fair enough.

  • Don't get a new number for spam, convert your current number to spam and get a second sim only for real people and keep it away from the internet. This is what I have done and 18 months later I have not got one single automated or otherwise spam call or text from anyone (excluding telstra). Your current number is probably all over the internet and you'll continue to get spam on it forever.

    • feel your point and have considered it… my phone numbers over 20yrs old though, and this would be a far bigger pain in the ass in terms of losing contact.

      • I am the same, my spam number was my first and only (until the year before last) number that I got with my first mobile aged 16. But I keep it in my old phone that is permanently charging in my lounge room, I can hear it when I'm home to answer it (I don't rush to it though as 99% of calls are spam calls) or check messages every few days in case a legitimate person is trying to get in touch. I use a long life sim with no credit to keep the number active.

Just give them a bogus number. If you are interested in the property you can always call them afterwards.
