Best Time to Pay for a Business Class Upgrade?

Hi all,

Wife and I are booked to travel to Europe later this year (September / October). We've booked with Singapore Airlines in Premium Economy for all of our flights, but this is my wife's dream holiday and I'd love to sneakily upgrade us to Business Class.

Is there a best time relative to our departure date lock in a good upgrade price?

Cheers!

  • Call up, play that card, maybe.. just maybe the CS rep might help a little further?

  • Can't you bid ( in $$$$ ) for an upgrade to business with Singapore Airline ?

and I'd love to sneakily upgrade us to Business Class.

Same as everyone else on the plane….

Not really, the demand for these 'upgrades' out strips supply. So if you think they'll go on sale etc, then that isn't going to happen.

So just ring up and see what the price is, its not going to get cheaper the longer you wait.

    • To be clear, I am 100% about paying for this upgrade. Not trying to pull the "I am special and you should totes give this to me" card. Just trying to figure out if there's a time period between the airline discounting Business class seats and starting to offer them to the frequent fliers.

As above, demand is out stripping supply. No one wants to fly in the back with covid around, so if they can get up front they do.

The FF get in early etc, there hasn't been a need to discount business class for a long time. So if you want to do this, then book in and do it before all the seats sell out.

      • Having a look at loadings and flights at the moment, including out to September, there is a very, very slim chance that there will be any business class seats available for a paid upgrade at any type of discount.

If you really want it, book business class now.

I think OP doesn't want to be seated next to his wife.

I actually think it'd be much more value to use that money and sneakily book her into a spa/massage/fancy dinner/room upgrade instead!

Absolutely! Wasting thousands on a seat upgrade that's quickly forgotten isn't the way to go for me. We're not talking a First Class experience here, it's just Business class, really not that special.

Would much rather spend that on something fancy on holiday that would be a great memory for years to come. There's a lot you can do in Europe. Make it so OP.

Fly economy and then book the fanciest spa, massage and hotel you can find to fix up your posture afterwards.

And you'll still be ahead in $$$!

  • As early as possible.

Why would anyone who can afford international business class flights spend their time on OZB.

    • +2

You don't get rich by spending money.

Only worth it if you have points and/or status, otherwise, the cash required will be pretty substantial.

As someone who flies a lot for work, business class is not a luxurious experience, it's there for business travellers (hence the name) who need to optimise efficiency. Helps you get through the airport more quickly, meaning you can get there later, lounge access so you can take meetings at the airport rather than sitting at the gate, better food on the plane so you don't have to eat when you've landed, more space so it's easier to get your laptop out and get work done, flat bed so you can wake up and go straight to your meeting after a change of clothes…etc.

If you want a luxurious experience, try out one of SQ's new suites. Join the mile high club.

      Basically, you're saying:

      • "Don't buy the BMW/Merc/Audi, buy the Rolls Royce"
      • "It's not really that special except <a long list of things that significantly reduces the stress of travelling on a plane>"

But the OP isn't asking for an opinion on it.

    • Luxury is a relative concept - and I can assure you that compares to cattle class, business is indeed luxurious, if for no other reason that the lie-flat bed and the additional space.

  • Last couple of days, my son had an upgrade offer on Qatar for DOH-MEL. Started off at $1500 ended up at $4000 the day of the flight. So maybe the early offer will be the best one, depending on demand. Business class on all flights were full. Hope this helps.

  • Unless you're upgrading on points or business is paying the price premium is not worth it IMHO.

Yes singapore airlines business is good but not another $4000 per seat for 14 hours of flying good.
I've flown with them a couple of times now in business and have been happy with it when paid for with points.

The cheapest option would've been to buy the business class tickets outright as there'll be a hefty upgrade premium that'll make you reconsider it.

    Each to their own though

  • A flight the length of flights between AUS and Europe are certainly worth considering an upgrade - I wouldn't bother on a short flight, but as others have said, unless you have status or points, it is a very questionable spend for most Ozbargainers.

SQ offers upgrades through their mySQupgrade program.
You can read up about it here: https://milelion.com/2022/03/07/singapore-airlines-now-offer…

It used to be a kind of bidding system, but now it is fixed price. Within 72 hours of departure, passengers will be offered a take-it-or-leave-it price, and all upgrades are confirmed immediately upon payment. It is subject to availability, I guess.

    • Any idea how much it is from PE to Business?

      • +1

Not cheap, varies with route, but it seems to be about USD1500 for SIN-EWR

  • Due you have a break in Singapore (or anywhere else) for a few hours? Maybe organise a massage and/or facial there. She'll be feeling much more relaxed for the rest of the trip.
