4k Free to Air- Live Streaming

Big Footy and Sports fan, and love watching the 4k sports live on Foxtel. Only issue is that Foxtel seems to be losing rights to different sports one by one. The next being my favourite- AFL.
With foxtel the only provider offering 4k Live sports.
If another provider was to showcase AFL, will it be in HD- SD720 like free to air.
I just dont understand how in 2022 while Tvs are becoming more advanced with better pictures. Only Foxtel 4k sports is the only live 4k content.
I dont even know why HD is still standard and 4k isnt the standard yet when is obviously better.

Question- when will free to air have 4k options and why does only foxtel have this option for live sports- movies .

Appreciate any response. Any show/sport/movie under 4k quality on the newer large tvs made for 4k content suck

Abit of a whinge lol- just dont understand why 4k is not even spoken about with free to air. Like how is the AFL grand final not in 4k, if fox have the satellite- when will free to air have better satellite?

  • Honestly I think all the answers come down to is $$$.

Only Foxtel 4k sports is the only live 4k content.

Its this way on purpose, so you specifically buy Foxtel for that quality. I know you discuss about advancement of technology and picture, but a lot of it is all possible. But usually what holds back that push is some person realising they can charge extra $$$ for one place to have exclusive 4K rights and charging $ for the rest and making bank. Or conversely some company realising if they pay extra $$$ for the exclusivity of the 4K version of that sport/popular tv show etc. They can make even more $$$.

FTA have to pay the government for transmission wavelengths, so financially for FTA companies it makes much more sense to buy one transmission band (cheaper) and have 8 x 720p channels within that band (ie 8 channels with different viewing options and all with paid adverts) than it does to buy one transmission band and only have 1 x 4k stream (1 channel with 1/8th the number of paid adverts) …

Foxtel do it because people will pay for it ;)

FTA won't go 4k anytime soon purely due to the economics of it :/

My dad still uses SD channels on his 65" 4K TV. It physically hurts me.

  • DVB-T2 is the standard globally and it has been trialed here, but basically the FTA networks want the government to fund it and say they don't have the money to do it themselves. It'll happen eventually, but it's all waiting on that. Dunno if either party made a pledge on it going into the election, I'm guessing not.

I wouldn't be too worried though. The bids for future AFL look like Paramount Plus wants to get involved, which will probably deliver 4K sports much like Foxtel does it now. One really expensive part of 4K sports is the camera equipment which has already been paid for, I can't imagine Paramount wouldn't jump on the opportunity to steam it in 4K along with most of their other stuff.

When the bandwidth is available, AND content.

  • Honestly most of the content isn't even close to being worthwhile Full HD quality on FTA. I'd much rather they improve the bandwidth and quality for this than to bother with a crappy implementation of 4K

    • I guess i am just referring to sports

      • Even with sport - I'd rather they get a smooth, crisp, 60Hz high quality 1080P feed before they bother going any higher on the resolution
