[Warning/PSA] Optus $20 → 10GB/14 Days Roaming Plan Activation Gave Me Domestic Plan Instead

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/494831

I was planning to have a multi-city trip from Singapore that would have benefited greatly from the Optus roaming plan (above link).

On the activation page, I pressed the "$20 Data Roaming Only Optus Prepaid Epic Data".

Instead of 10GB/14 days of roaming data, I got given 12GB of Australian domestic data over 10 days despite clicking the 10GB/14 days plan.

I went through the activation screen again with another new SIM and it does the same thing.

Press roaming plan -> site gives you the domestic plan.

Just to see what would happen I also pressed the domestic plan and it gives you the domestic plan…

In the MyOptus app, it does offer me the ability to buy said roaming plan at the cost of $20, on top of the $20 I have already paid, thinking I was getting a roaming plan.

  • What’s BS is that Optus is owned by Singtel, so why is there a roaming charge at all when going to Singapore? It’s the same damn company lol

What did Optus support say when you contacted them?

    • +1

It took about an hour on Optus support but the rep promised to give me a $20 credit I can use for buying the $20 roaming within "15 minutes to 4 hours".

That's fine for me because my flight is tonight, but if someone was expecting to activate and go, then it would be a challenge.

Can't really do it before you board if you need to wait for Optus support to remedy the situation.

      • In the end they gave me $20 "extras" credit instead of the $20 = $210 roaming credit so effectively I can only get 1GB instead of 10GB. ($20 = $20 instead with 5c/MB).

Not 100% sure it will even work.

Don't have time to argue with Optus anymore so I guess 1GB is better than nothing.

  • I sent a ticket to Optus IT to get this problem addressed so we'll see how this goes.

Hopefully they fix the website issues.

    • This option might have been the most appropriate from the get go, no?

The stop over at OZB appears an unnecessary step.

      • That's why it's a PSA, I think….

      • I don't think it's any different from telling people online that the airports were struggling during Easter.

If you're relying on being able to use Optus roaming this week (eg if your hotel check in details are on your phone and you're using Google Maps to get around) I'm telling you, be careful.

        • Hopefully it's just a unique situation rather than system-wide issue.

Hope it gets resolved for you.
