OzBargain 2022 EoFY Charity Donations - $30,000 to 3 Mental Health Charities (Beyond Blue, Black Dog Institute, Lifeline)

We are doing our annual End of Financial Year charity donations a bit different this year. It has been 10 years since we first started donating OzBargain's revenue to charities. In the past we have requested our community members to suggest and to vote for the charities to donate to, however I felt that the charities picked each year were a bit random & unfocused. I felt at this stage we would want to build longer term supporting relationship with some of the charities, and be more focused on some specific causes. Instead of donating to 5 to 6 different charities voted by the community this June, OzBargain will focus on just one particular issue — mental health. It has been one area that I am interested in. I guess many of us would have family or know friends experiencing difficulties — depression, anxiety, etc. Moreover as an online community, we also came across individuals that might need a bit of help sometimes, especially over the past 2 years when the world was in lockdown over COVID.

These are the charity organisations that we are donating to this month, and I have in fact just put through $10,000 donations to each of the charities above ($30,000 in total).

  • Beyond Blue

We are Australia’s most well-known and visited mental health organisation, focused on supporting people affected by anxiety, depression and suicide. We don’t ever take this position for granted nor do we rest on our laurels.

  • Black Dog Institute

As the only medical research institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan, our aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone. We do this through ‘translational’ research. Integrating our research studies, education programs, digital tools and apps, clinical services, and public resources to discover new solutions, foster connections and create real-world change.

  • Lifeline Australia

We are a national charity providing all Australians experiencing emotional distress with access to 24 hour crisis support and suicide prevention services. We are committed to empowering Australians to be suicide-safe through connection, compassion and hope.

Donation to mental health related charities is likely going to be recurring in the future EoFY. As for our Christmas charity donations, we will still ask our community members for suggestions and donate to the most voted ones. So please wait until December if you want to see OzBargain donating to your favourite charities.

On a related note, I am doing The Push-Up Challenge trying to raise some money for more donations to Lifeline/Movember. It's Day 7 so far — it's quite a struggle, and the rest of OzBargain Team isn't doing great either (if any pushup at all). So if you are thinking of donating this month, send some money our way :)

I would’ve preferred cancer charities… or charities that make the world better and stop people from being depressed in the first place.

My friend’s dog got diagnosed with depression.. we must live really shitty lifestyles if even dogs are depressed.

    • Go and donate your own money to your cancer charities that work on targeting depression.

Come back here and post the outcome.

      Don't be a choosing beggar.

Cancer patient here. I'd equally like support for both mental health and charity organisations. Life's a bitch.

I see your point. But I think mental health is something that will never be completely eradicated, so funding for mental health support will always be needed.

      • this may seem insensitive; but i reckon diseases as such would be curable when our heads are right with mental.
then should be more funding and exploration towards otherwise alternative/"natural" treatments after that.

Bloody brilliant Scotty & the OzB crew. Mental health issues are far more prevalent than some people see or realise. The more we can support organisations that assist, the better.

    Worthy Charities.
I also want to point out LGBTIQ+ mental health services given recent events in politics

Thank you for everything you and the team do Scotty.

  • Thank you Scotty & Ozbargain. Wonderful idea.

  • This thread should be pinned and more people should see your push up challenge, team!

Keep up the good work =)
