DeLonghi Dedica EC785BG - Beige $199.99 Delivered $189.99 in-store @ Costco (Membership Required)

250

Update: If you can make it to Costco in-store (I saw these in the Marsden Park NSW store on 9 June) then they currently have this coffee machine on special for $189.99 with the special packaging on the box indicating it includes the "Barista Pack" which is a metal tamper and a stainless steel milk jug.

If you cant make it in-store Costco have the beige Dedica for sale online for $199 which is a decent price for this machine.
You may want to confirm with them if they have the Barista Pack as it is not mentioned online.

I have purchased one of these some time earlier from Myer, and found it makes great espresso, but upgraded my machine with a bottomless portafilter and 51mm tamper from Aliexpress.

I dont have facebook but was speaking to someone who saw a post that there may be a better deal in-store with a bonus tamper and milk jug for $189.
Can anyone confirm this?

The things I like about the Dedica espresso machine:
Programmable shot temperature can be changed between 3 preset levels.
Two programmable shot volume buttons - shot can be set by holding the button down until the required amount of coffee is extracted.
The machine appears to use a thermocoil for managing be temperature method of the extraction. Temperature control such as PID is not mentioned but it seems to perform well.
As the thermocoil is not directly mounted above the group I purge the machine for a few seconds before the first shot to bring it up to temperature.
Small footprint machine with a narrow profile means it can sit next to the grinder and not take up too much room.
I use my dedica as my spare machine and take it with me some times when I travel/visit.

The things that could be improved with the Dedica:
Panarello stream wand is awful. Some have replaced the wand with the Silvia wand but this involves disassembly of the machine.
Plastic construction feels a little flimsy.
Water tank is at the back and limited in size but at least you can see the level from the side.
Portafilter is aluminium construction and feels cheap.
Comes only with pressurised baskets for one and two cup dispensing.
The included plastic "tamper" is an abomination. Close to useless.

I bought this about 4 years ago from Amazon only for $89! It is still working.

      Same.

      • Ditto.

    • I remember buying it for about ~117 at Amazon 4 years ago. Got a new machine this week (gift) and managed to sell this one for $90 in the marketplace 15 minutes. It is a great little machine.

  • I also have this model. I thought something was wrong with it until I got a decent grinder (the smart grinder pro). It makes good coffee once you calibrate everything- bean type, grind size, inner grinder wheel grind size. The positives of the espresso machine are that there's very minimal heat up time (15 seconds?) and also very minimal time between pulling espresso and switching to the steamer (again, 10 - 15s). The negatives are that the steam wand gasket will eventually fail- I jerry rigged a solution with cable ties.

Espresso OK, milk drinks are terrible.

      • +1

Why do you say that? I can't make latte art but I have learned to use the wand OK. More submerged = flat white type deal, closer to the surface = microfoam, cappucino type thing.

        • It’s the wand and the diminutive boiler size. After pulling a double shot, then purging some water from the boiler (so it doesn’t overheat and force a purge), it simply feels breathless. A basic wand without the bulky, adjustable tip would help. I just find the machine very inconsistent, although my beans, grind settings and weights etc remain consistent.

      • Wand is definitely terrible. Mine has too much hot steam coming out with too much pressure, it boils the milk, and destroys the froth. I now use a separate Bodum milk frother. It's much easier, and my creamy frothy milk will be ready by the time I've finished making the espresso shot. Works especially well with Bonsoy.

The wand is rubbish. Won't stay together. Dangerous.
Returned mine and bought a Breville.

  • Bought one of these a year ago and works great, the steam wand I replaced with a rancilio silvia wand and the basket replaced with a bottomless one. The only gripe I have about this machine is it only works with 18g max which isn't enough for me.

    • Where do you buy replacement wands?

      Looks good!
      Much better than the panarello.

Take the wand tube off, ziptie. Non pressurized basket. Good to go.

    • +2

The ziptie is important, otherwise the rubber wand launches in a burst of stream.

      • +5

        Can confirm.

      • Thanks any recommendations for a non pressurised basket ?

        • You can use the portafilter that comes with the machine and remove the black plastic "foaming attachment" from within the portafilter by simply unscrewing 1 screw. You can cut off the 2 stream divider with a hack saw easily enough to see your shot more clearly. They also sell these bottomless portafilters on ebay/amazon for about $30.
As for the basket itself, ebay also has them for about $15 for a decent quality double basket. I've been using one like that for a few years now and the metal hasn't tarnished in the slightest.

      • I release the initial steam into an empty cup, then put the milk up to it. If you start with the milk already submerged you will get the silicone tube flying off :p

    • Any steps how to do it ?

Have one of these for a few years now, makes great espresso.

Those that are complaining about the wand, remove the panarello (stainless steel) part and you are left with a silicone nose, use it just like that. Also, make sure you use cold milk from the fridge, it gives you the time required to make great microfoam without burning the milk. Makes great latte art when you use the above method.

Highly recommend, I might buy another machine for my camper.

  • Have this exact machine and bought through Costco about a year ago, great little machine.

For those with Costco membership, couple this with the ~$15 Vittoria 1kg pre-ground coffee pack sold at Costco for a quick & decent espresso - based on current takeaway coffee prices it should pay itself off in 2-3 months.
