Private Health Insurance

Just wondering what are good health insurance these day?
I was with Doctor's Health Fund and their premium seem to have sky rocketed.
Im not paying $98 (premium hospital cover) for my wife and paying $58 (basic hospital cover) for myself.

It used to be $20 cheaper few month back for both of them.

Anyone know good hospital covers?

  • If you are a doctor surely you can afford any health insurance?

    • I used to be with Victoria Teacher's Credit Union but I'm not a teacher…

  • Hi, I went to iselect to review my health cover costs.

I noticed my AustUnity health cover costs were going up every 6 months. So it was time to review it.

iselect recommend our family take up the HCF health cover which was a good $40 a month cheaper than AustUnity. It also offered more rebates for things like physio etc. No waiting period.

Aparrently HCF is not for profit organisation, so profits are put back into the fund (thus cheaper cover and more benefits).

I'm yet to put it to the test but on paper (and on my bank account!) it's looking good :)

    thanks

  • The biggest issue is iSelect doesn't have all the health cover funds, so you might miss out on the cheapest available. I think health funds have to pay to be on iSelect.

I've subscribed to this thread as I need to buy some (single) cover from next financial year and I only want the cheapest possible to remove tax issues. Any other features are an extra.

  • I've used iSelect for car insurance…
I found that applying via the insurance company's website sometimes turns out cheaper.

    • I think iSelect gets a commission as well…

  • +1

    Try this site for comparing

It is listed in the Ozbargain wiki under health and beauty at the bottom

  • why get health insurance?

I'm saying this as I don't need glasses, I have good teeth and when I have had my two stays in hospital both were public and there was no issue.

2 friends of mine who both have breast cancer and are receiving treatment. one is public and one is private. the private currently has gap payments of about $20,000 for her treatment. the public one doesn't. There is no difference in the treatment they are receiving. the private one is still paying her quarterly premiums as well.

my kids will need braces in the future. I will join then as orthodontics are expensive. but now? I don't see the point.

australia has very good health care. we have medicare.

    • For me, tax reasons. I can actually buy health cover that's less than the medicare levy surcharge that will be applied on my income. Unlike taxable income, you can't reduce your 'Reportable' income through deductions.

      • cool, did not know that. thanks

  • i used iselect, and compared to hcf website directly. It seems they are different policies…there is none that match up.

    like i used iselect, http://www.iselect.com.au/CDSX/Recommendations_prepare.actio…

but when i go to HCF website, its most closely resemble to
    http://www.hcf.com.au/pdf/Brochures/Hospital_Adv_Sav_General…

but its not quite. iselect option is about $50/month cheaper

  • Try http://www.hif.com.au/
