What to Buy in The USA?

Hello OzLegends,

I remember heading to the USA as a younger lad and being so keen to have access to more brands/items and usually for much cheaper prices. Globalisation seems to have been pretty effective at bringing better access and prices to AUS. So is there still anything that you consider a better buy in the USA? E.g. last time I was there I snagged some Yeti goods before they were sold in AUS (and much cheaper).

Pretty vague topic but I always seem to kick myself after these trips for not maximising the opportunity.

Thanks in advance!

Edit: Haha I love the comment section

  • CBD oil and cream is another product readily available over there, but not here.

  • Make up; when I last went back about 4 years ago, it was still about 30% - 50% cheaper than buying here. I was basically a mule for my wife and her friends.

  • clothes/shoes from outlet malls, laptop/phones - check slickdeals

    Peanut Butter M&Ms

  • My mate just came back with bunch of THC vapes and gummies. Cheap AF over there

  • Cars, especially those high yield investment European ones 😆

  • As someone mentioned earlier check slickdeals. Walmart often has crazy clearance deals, even on laptops, and it's often posted on that site.

Even better, go crazy with brickseek. Check availability on local stores (not limited to Walmart)
    https://brickseek.com/walmart-inventory-checker/

Just be aware that all the best deals go really quick and there are professionals that basically live at Walmart and snap up the deals to resell (often on Amazon)

  • I like sports and merchandise in there are so much cheaper than here.

    No other suggestions.

You like your men in leather?

  • Bulletproof vest(s)

    Seriously tho, Advil PM.

It's ibuprofen with a sleep aid. It's the best thing ever.

  • Luxury watches are a bit cheaper

  • Depending on where specifically in the US you go, there are large outlet places (big brands) that have decent discounts (e.g if in San diego than Carlsbad premium outlets).

On a side note, I would recommend trying an indoor gun range. Let's just say the experience made me appreciate Australia gun laws!!! (Tip if it's ur/anyone else Bday closeby, then the lane and gun hire is free)

I’m going next week, thinking sports gear, golf clubs, snowboards, but it’s not as good as it was 6-7 years back. But someone said Ross, it’s by far the best store for me both in terms of gifts and things for yourself, but some luck involved.

I'm going to America in August.
Clothes I normally go crazy on, Going to about 5 MLB games. So I will be spending a few thousand on that alone, and 4k Blu-rays that didn't release in Australia.
Also will be buying a few pairs of shoes Jordans or something Australia usually doesn't get. Normally way cheaper in the States
Might buy a guitar depending on the conversion rate and what they have when I go?

  • Cheetos Crunchy variants and Ruffles

If you like American chocolates and biscuits it's hard to go past the share packs for different flavoured m and ms and other chocolates and oreos and other biscuits. Variety and price so much better than what we have in Australia. We bought an esky over there and filled it and as we were allowed 2 bags each and only had 1 each checked it and it opened it up when we got home.

  • Classic American cars, grab me a couple while you're there

  • Schott Leather Jacket

  • Mate buy as many LG oleds as you can and flog them back here

A lot of the confectionary you can probably find in those city super marts in Australia so there's nothing special there anymore, aside from the ability to say buy a massive mega pack for a fraction of the cost.

I found the US underwhelming, most people who haven't been grew up watching US sitcoms and thought that they were going to experience that same vibe. I found eating to be the absolute underrated. To get those oversized meals I think you really need to be closer to the outskirts of towns. Otherwise the food is pretty average and you pay crazy price for it. I remember being in some restaurant in San Fran and thought maybe I'll get a steak, it's about $14 USD, yeah should be ok. Well… factor in: Tips, then something called a Health Tax (basically you pay for the workers health insurance), and you're at about almost $20 USD, and with the AUD power, that's about $28, lol yeah for a steak, and it was just an average sized one, I'm like jesus I could get a $10 steak (back then) in a local pub with chips and salad.

I know that Walmart's have lots of clearance aisles frequently so you should check them out if you are near one, likewise to Target, Target is their Kmart in terms of popularity. But also note that you'll be competing with these Amazon resellers at clearance aisles, lol they basically jump between a lot of them and scoop up anything good to resell.

As many have said if you're into shoes and clothing then yeah outlets usually are the best option.

    Why is everybody using melatonin?

    • +1

      To help them sleep.

    • +1

Melatonin in the USA is seriously cheap. $3 for 200 tablets at Walmart. You need a prescription for it here in Australia, or buy online. Homeopathic melatonin is freely available, but being homeopathic it of course doesn't do anything at all.

    • People binge watch Netflix and don't sleep, and their sleep cycles get screwed.

  • Guns.

  • Check out SAS shoes - I am still wearing them after 10+ years of regular use.

  • WWE replica belts.

OP is going hawaii. Prices are nowhere near as cheap as the mainland US. Found it to be dearer overall than holidaying here.

Sauce. Walmart has a huge selection.
You will see the common ones (Franks, Sriracha, Tabasco etc), but you will also get like 10 versions of Tabasco etc.
Also a lot of other types.
One of my favourites is the Buffalo Wild Wings garlic parmesan wing sauce.

Clothes. Head to any of the department stores (walmart, kohls, macys, nordstrom, the gap, old navy etc). And then look for the clearance racks.
You can get last season and overstocked shirt and pants etc for $5.
Also I love the Walmart printed T's. They usually have a whole wall of pop fashion for about $6 from memory (been a few years since I have been over). Good for some weekend shirts etc. (if printed shirts are your thing)

Hunting gear is cheaper. Knifes etc. Any of the outdoors type stuff. Know the rules though if you are bringing back any weapons (knives etc)

Power tools. You can get good brands very cheap. Milwaukee etc.
I got a full kit for around $250 one time. Same kit here retails for around $1000.
Have to want to get it, and you need a way to power a 120v charger ($30 stepdown transformer from ebay has kept mine going for a decade)

    • One of my favourites is the Buffalo Wild Wings garlic parmesan wing sauce.

Like this one? I found it on Frugo but they want $39.95 a bottle.

funny - I can't think of a single thing I regarded as a great buy in the US of A

I was gonna say corn - we saw 11 cobs for $1 - but that was Canada …

For the US I'd say just wander into any WalMart and see what's on special that grabs your fancy

when my GPS carked it I grabbed a cheapo phone that did the job - for like $30 or so - deal …

  • Rolex?

  • Jeans, shoes - most clothes are cheaper - Calvin Cline is equivalent to target almost in terms of price in the US.

Merrel Shoes, any kind of runners - all loads cheaper.

Basically just wear your jocks on the plane on the way over with an empty bag. In fact, i threw my bag away and bought a new one there to fill up.

  • Back in the 80s, we bought some Atari 2600 cartridges, as they were newer and near 1/2 price. At the time I didn't know about PAL/NTSC. Only 1 worked on our Kreisler 1975 Colour TV. I think one worked on the newer Rankarena. When my friend bought a ColecoVision with 2600 adapter, they all worked, so I gave them to him.

Aussie dollar is super shit right now - if you like American Bourbon get some of the good stuff, don't bother with White Label Jim Beam or Basic Jack Daniels.

  • Hot sauce. Vinyl records.

Go to the outlets and clothing handbags and luxury goods are way cheaper.

    Rare games.

    A gridiron ball.

    Rare sneakers.

    Genuine NBA ball

    Baseball merch

Polo Ralph Lauren is cheap over there.

    Gap clothing

  • Clothes, american snacks

  • Is there a YankeeBargain website? lol
