Scratched cd sealed new returns

Got myself a cd from jb hifi a few weeks ago if I remember and only just unsealed it.
Never thought to look at the disc and started listening to it song 14 near the end second last song starts to skip.
I take it out my machine and finds a scratch at the end of cd.
In all the years of buying a cd I have never had a sealed cd come scratched.
As I got it a few weeks ago how are jb hifi for returns like this?
They could say it was me and yes I could live with the last two songs skipping but why should I as I paid good Money for it.
Normally I check a disc prior to using it but never with this.
Not that it matters as once unsealed it’s there words against mine.
I go to them regardless as I’m not happy with it and I’m a regular customer but let’s see.

Anyone had similar with scratched cd from new?

  • JBHiFi are good with customer returns. I bought a vinyl on behalf of a friend in Italy and it was sent to their address. They went to play it recently, only to find that it was unplayable (warped). I contacted JBHiFi Customer Service and they ended up giving a full refund including postage to Italy

  • I found their online refund is great, but in store sucked (guessing in store is person by person or place by place sort of thing). either way worth trying. do ebgames still have disk cleaners/repairers? I think they used to run them for like a dollar or two. might be worth if you can't get your return

    • It’s click and collect not delivered to me

  • obviously first port of call is contacting jbhifi.

in regards to a scratched CD being playable again …how deap is the scratch?
if only a minor surface scratch, then can be fixed .. but if it goes beyond the clear plastic (outer layer) then it may have damaged the area where the data is stored.

a fine cloth used for polishing I have found works wonders … would give that a go.
beyond that is more hap-hazard approaches … have heard of ppl using clear nail varnish to fill scratches in CD's … but IMO that's really a last resort method.

All this is my experiences with CD's back in the early 1990's/2000's - and fixes i used back then … i think the last time I actually played a music CD was probably around 2009/2010.

    • Hard to say if bad scratch or not and to be honest I don’t want to play around with it and make it look worse or less playable.
Should work flawlessly it’s brand new and obviously was scratched in production.
But all good I contact store see what they say.
If it had been a second hand copy yes I would play around with it but as it come like this is no good to me.

They'll accept the return out of sympathy because you are still using CD's

That's pretty rich coming from someone who's named after a program that hasn't been updated since Windows ME.

Nothing wrong with cds physical all the way for me even films.
All these people paying for steaming films then it’s gone and can’t watch the movie again till next time if a next time.
Same goes for gaming why pay for digital better to have something to show for your money with item in your hand.
Ok when they stop doing physical items then I have no choice but I have and that’s how I prefer it.
Yep digital would not have this issue for sure but could lose the digital copy etc

        That makes sense. Cheers.

steaming films then it’s gone and can’t watch the movie again

You have heard the term "on demand"?

        Same goes for gaming

No. The CD is worthless and out of date by time you walk out the shop door. Most only allow 1 install and then there's a 20gb download to update the out of date CD.

  • Got myself a cd from jb hifi a few weeks ago

    Why though?

    • Cause I was bored lol

You know streaming services are CD quality these days.

    • Sure thing physical all the way for me lol

    • Actually, Spotify and Amazon Music are not. Probably a few others are not also.

      • Apple Music is. Apple even offer higher resolution and spatial for some albums.

    • Spotify and Amazon music etc are not.

I use Tidal Hifi as that is FLAC quality….

Most other services definitely are not though

  • Happy 50th mate!

  • You can pick up used CDs for pennies on the dollar they are quite cheap, also when compared with streaming you do not require wifi or internet.

    • Yes used cds when they get old and no longer needed but hard getting a used copy on a new release.

But lol not sure why I even posted this messaged jb and was not expecting back a reply more so place I deal with.
They have one laid aside to swap over, I always doubt these people thinking he probably scratched it himself.
I did have it almost 2 weeks and only just opened it.
But your never sure what you find but first for me.

I suggested if they wish in my orginal message we can open the replacement copy to both witnesses no issues but that’s up to them.

I’m pretty careful with my stuff and they are looked after.
But good they are cool about it, if I was them I would be wondering what did he do to scratch the disc but maybe everyone does not think like me.

    • Thanks for sharing the update. Great outcome

    • But what album is the CD?

      • My guess is Steve Earl - Copperhead Road

        • YouTube auto played that for me just a couple of days ago…

  • What's a CD?

20th century man used to burn pirated music to CDs before streaming services cut out the middleman and let us just play all the music from massive online libraries.

  • I haven't bought a cd in years but I understand there are many reasons to. Large parts of this country have no wifi and even in the so called service areas the telecommunications providers say they cover there is no service at all. Unless you download prior to leaving a city streaming may not be possible.

  • Had to take a CD back to JB's for a refund which I got, they just threw the CD straight into the bin. The manager handled it, said she'd never had to do a refund on a CD before. Was a release album but not one thing about it being mostly live music, which was crap.

  • My experience has been that a store will exchange a damaged CD for the same one. They don’t usually refund unless it’s sealed because you can always copy the CD then damage it and then get a refund.

  • What did they say when you called them ? I had a $26 Starwars game recently delivered from JB online it came infested with ants so opened to a support ticket to complain that I received an unsealed copy with an ant infestation and included a picture and they fully refunded me so can't complain their support is amazing.

  • FWIW - Back in the dark ages we used to use Silvo on scratched CD’s. Vinyl came back. Who knows CDs could too. Maybe.
