CORTEX SR-3 Squat Rack - $228 + Delivery @ Harvey Norman

80

Was interested in the recent Rebel Sports deal, but reading the reviews it seemed the uprights could get in the way when squatting and bench-pressing. i.e. you have to keep your range of motion quite tight.

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/705733

So did a bit of a search for something compact and solid but could still accommodate squats (with some safety), bench press and pull-ups.

Stumbled across this for $228. Add around $50 for postage.

Pretty good deal I think.

I know the price is a bit more expensive, but I've got something similar to the below (see link) - I had a Rebel one previously, similar to the Aldi one. The advantages of this rack over the one you've mentioned.

    • The holes for adjusting the height is much closer. Although it doesn't seem to make a difference, it makes a big difference. Previously I had to "tippy-toe" the barbell out. If you then put it down one hole, it would be too low. I guess you could add a layer of plywood if you really wanted to
    • It might not make much difference if you're not lifting heavy, but since this is a half rack and it's not heavy, the one I've posted has the storage capacity at the back, where I place 20kg on each side. This adds additional weight to stop the squat rack tipping over.
    • The one I've advertised, hopefully it the same one as mine where its powder coated, instead of painted. The paint will chip off if you're taking the barbell out/in of the rack.

Obviously this all comes at a cost of 65% additional, but whether that is worth it or not..

Fwiw it’s also on gym directs ebay. Use the Afterpay 10% code which practically covers shipping cost!

Can’t post as a deal as they only have 2 and ozbargain requirments says needs 10 available

    • I feel like the uprights on the half rack you've linked, slanting backwards, would make it awkward when racking/unracking the barbell for bench press (I.e. behind the head)

      • That could be an issue, although I'm not too sure since I'm not benching atm.

      • slanting backwards, would make it awkward when racking/unracking the barbell for bench press (I.e. behind the head)

hm yes that would be pretty annoying to get used to, but i think shouldn't be a huge drama for the asking price.

        • The slant wouldn't be a problem, you only need to align your shoulders and head so the hooks are in the right spot.

          • @richy_o: On closer inspection, I think the slant will be alright. Not because of adjusting ones head/shoulder position, but because the horizontal cross brace (connecting the legs) are offset to the back, meaning one can position their bench further back underneath the barbell.

    • I had experience with Cortex pull up station. Building it was terrible, I'm lucky to have plenty of serious tools, as I had to literally drill 10mm hole in its thick metal. Inspite of a visible hardcore construction, it developed some squeaky noises and undesirable movements (in the push up handles) less than a month later. The company support was useless and I had to send it back eventually.
On the opposite side, after that I bought Celsius pull up station from Rebel. It turned up to be surprisngly solid Inspite of its sleek lines, very easy to build too. Btw, Costco sell them Adidas branded .

    • The JHooks are also better on the muscle motion. Bigger, thicker and easier to unrack and rack.

Can i use this to do curls?

  • Anyone own this and can vouch that the safety bars can be at a good height for benching?

    • I would assume it's similar based on my comments above. Because there is a big distance between each hole, you wouldn't be able to get exactly the right height and it would be totally dependant on how long your arm is :). But then again, if you're still wanting to buy the rack and you can't get the right height, just add a layer of plywood on the ground so you can elevate by that extract cm or two.
