1 Year Prepaid with Roaming?

Hi am just wondering if any long term prepaid sims have international roaming (whether included or at extra cost)? Mostly just to receive texts to verify identity while overseas. Thankyou

You don’t need roaming on Telstra VoWifi to receive texts overseas. Just wifi.

    • Would that be available on Boost prepaid?

      • Yes

      • do you get Message2txt?

    • are you saying you don even need roaming for VoWifi to WORK OVERSEAS (I am aware it works over wifi)? What happens if you get a message when not connected to wifi?

      • On Telstra VoWifi works overseas without roaming. If you have roaming and you’re on an overseas mobile network & not on wifi then you’ll receive the message over the mobile network in the usual way. If you otherwise aren’t roaming then the message will be delivered when you connect to VoWifi. Receiving text messages over mobile networks overseas is still free. It’s if you dial out or use data over mobile networks on roaming that you get charged. You don’t get charged if you do this over VoWifi.

        • Did this work for you on boost too? I'm too afraid to risk going overseas to find out I won't get my 2fa messages and stuck unable to login to things.

          • @nsonha: There’s a whole heap of reports on Whirlpool confirming it works with Boost as well.

            • @kipps: Sorry to be pedantic, but for you, on what network did it work?

              • @nsonha: Telstra postpaid with a direct Telstra service.

Woolworths Mobile has an add on for international roaming.

  • I just read that Amaysim offers roaming at an additional cost, but receiving sms (at the country I selected) is free. It says you have to add credit to roam, does anyone know what the minimum you have to add is? As in receiving texts are technically free but do you still need to have credit in there to roam in the first place? Ty

So I had an online chat with them, you have to put $10 credit in for roaming to work, even if receiving texts are free. I believe the credit can then be used for outgoing calls and texts.

I've also read if you have an eSim with Telstra Prepaid, and you put a local sim card in your sim card slot, the Telstra service will connect over VoLTE.

Guys tried and tested, any network as far as you have wifi calling available in the handset. Doesn’t matter Android or iOS it works for calls back to Australia ( not anywhere in the world) and sms as well. I had both when i was is Dubai, the country that blocks even whatsapp and facetime calls, yet it worked so should work everywhere, if you have wifi.

    • Just out of curiosity, which network were you with while abroad?

    • Optus’ VoWifi document says it won’t work overseas. Some carriers geoblock it.

    • works for calls back

      works for receiving calls too?

  • Tried Catch and Aldi, both support's said that there is no roaming anymore for any 3rd party network operators. I.e. I need to get a plan directly from Optus or Telstra to make it work, and there is nothing they can do.

Amaysim (optus) does, for an extra charge

      • Thanks. Probably will move to it. But it is significantly more expensive than other similar plans.

  • I’m on Amaysim and since going overseas I’ve switched to Pay As You Go ($0) just to receive verification texts. I activated International Roaming on the website and then disabled data roaming on my iPhone, so it costs me nothing.

I’m using an e-sim (Orange Flex from Poland), so I get both numbers working at the same time. This is on an iPhone 13, I don't know if older phones can do this. You can also just get an old school burner phone for verification texts.

This combination is definitely the best way to be connected in Europe. Do note: with Polish/Spanish/etc. plans you don’t get 100% data rate when roaming around Schengen. In my case, my plan costs $16 per month and I get 80GB data but only 6.96GB to use outside of Poland. But on Amaysim I would normally pay $20 for 6GB, so I feel no burn.

    • Don't you still have to pay Amaysim to activate roaming?

      • No, it doesn’t cost anything to activate roaming.

        https://www.amaysim.com.au/plans/mobile-plans/international/…

Receiving texts is free but everything else has a fee, so just make sure you have data roaming switched off and you don’t accept any incoming phone calls into your Australian number (unless you have wifi calling)

        • When I messaged Amaysim they said i would need some payg credit (min $10) to activate roaming to receive messages (which is free) so your experience is no credit is required after all?

          • @Rain Cloud: Possibly. I activated it when I still had a few days left of the 25gb plan but since that ended it’s been on $0 and it’s working fine.

            • @funeste: My question to them was if i was on a 1 yr prepaid whether Id need extra payg credit to activate roaming while overseas, they said yes. But that is possibly a slightly different scenario to yours.

        • The issue with wifi calling is that, even if your provider allows it overseas and not charging calls like incoming in roaming which is trivial check for them, you always need be sure to accept calls only when you're connected to wifi, there's no way to hard disable calls over mobile connections. So you will be caught one day.

p.s. Amaysim does not support wifi calling

          • @[Deactivated]: I'm thinking forwarding call to a skype numer, at that point, the prepaid from amaysim plus the number subscription on skype is approaching near big telco roaming, but you get unlimited receiving calls overseas

            • @nsonha: I explained my setup Amaysim -> diversion -> Crazytel landline DID -> SIP client in https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/656262 , it works really well, but it's still 35c/min to receive calls plus 1$/m to Crazytel and $10/y to Amaysim.

  • Aldimobile. $5 for the first year, $20/year if you need it more than that. Roaming included.

Actual roaming costs aren't cheap, but receiving SMS is free. Been using this myself while living in the US for the past 5+ years without issue.
