This product has compatibility problems with the new MacBook M1 chip, please purchase with caution.

As per my deal if you read it…

There's a known issue with Mac where the DisplayPort won't output any video, however the two HDMI ports still work fine.

If you want to be technical the reason is because it's not a DisplayLink dock. With DisplayLink you must install their adaptor and have it running in the background on an M1 MacBook for DP to work. HDMI is fine.

      • Incorrect. An M1 MacBook will not output to both HDMI ports simultaneously.

        • Yes you are correct. Dual displays or more with the M1 MacBooks require a DisplayLink dock and the driver. Compatible DisplayLink docks can be found here.

Misleading marketing on the display info. It'll do a single 4k60 at best, under certain circumstances. It won't do dual 4k60.

4k60 will also require a DP1.3 laptop AND monitor. If either end is DP1.2 then the Dock/laptop may either negotiate 4k30 or downgrade data to USB 2.

The RRP of $280 is so absolutely beyond a joke it's not even funny.

RRPs on Chinese sites are jokes - they're never real. Been happening for over a decade.

  • Why are they selling the faulty product..

    • +3

It's not a faulty product. Apple are being their usual selves by requiring proprietary software to run multiple monitors on their Mac M1 platform. The dock itself works as designed.

      • Thanks for the clarification..

M1 pro and above will do dual displays. The base m1 won't. The kind part of me says they just rushed the m1 to market before dual display really worked properly. The cynic in me says they did it to make people buy the more expensive devices =P

I'm not sure about the display port issue however. Our lenovo docks work fine with display port on an m1 mac.

        • Ah yes I forgot that the M1 Pro was supposedly fixed, thanks for the confirmation. I'm glad I'm still rocking an Intel MacBook to be honest so I don't have to deal with all these compatibility issues.

The DP issue came from the BG reviews of the product. An AU user mentioned it.

          • @Clear: Given the new M2 MacBooks once again only support 1 external display I’m not sure Apple sees there’s anything to fix, lol. Almost seems like an intentional limitation of the base M1/M2 chips.

The M1 Pro does 2 externals, the M1 Max does 4.

I have an M1 Pro MacBook, really happy with it overall but do have one gripe with the monitor stuff. My home office setup is a USB-C docking monitor with a second monitor daisy-chained via DisplayPort. My work laptop (Windows) runs everything with just the USB-C cable without a hitch, but my MacBook won’t work with the second monitor unless it’s connected directly.

Not a huge issue, I’ve run a HDMI cable from the second monitor for the Mac, I just like the convenience of only needing to connect one cable when use the work laptop.

        • Even M2 doesn't fix that issues, it's just they don't really give a shit when it comes to their 'base' model pushing us to buy their pro models.

  • My Dell D6000 dock(triple 4k display) is starting to struggle - freezes and needs restart 2-3 times a week, sometimes in the middle of Teams calls.
Has anyone used this successfully for 4k triple display setup?
Noticed someone mentioning some gotchas above, so wanted to understand the limitations better.

    • Wondering if this is a teams caused issue. Mines doing the same thing. Different brand dock.

  • Any recommendation of a cheap Displaylink or other dongle that will help me connect 2 monitors to a Macbook pro 13? Thanks.

    • I have a Dell WD19TB Docking Station that I use with a 2020 MBP 13 connected to two monitors via Thunderbolt. Note some of the restrictions documented here

      • Cool, Thanks. I was thinking if there was something under a 80bux. Seems like there are none.

          • @futaris: You cant use those. They will cause both the monitor to display same content. You need a displaylink compatible dock to and displaylink driver to use 2 monitors on m1 air and m1 13 mbp.

            • @John Doh: Unfortunately displaylink itself is a compromise - it's effectively a virtual graphics card powered by the CPU, and it sends lossy compressed video to the display.

It works … but it's not the same as a real graphics-card-connected display…

              • @Nom: Have you tried it? Is the lossy compressed video noticable? Thanks.

                • @John Doh: Yes I've used it with PCs - before USB C existed, it was the way to get extra video outputs from your laptop.
It works fine, and the quality is good. I'm just pointing out that it's not the same as a real actual video output 😎

        • Yeah, be wary of cheaper solutions. There'll be a compromised made somewhere and unless you know for sure that it ticks all the boxes for you, it's going to be a risky purchase.

I also own a $50 USB-C dock that I use to connect up to a single monitor but it took me a couple of attempts to find one that could deliver a 2K resolution @ 144Hz - even then I had to contend with power delivery and heat issues. It was a minefield navigating through the various options

          • @OSienna: For me I just used a usb C to hdmi / usb c to displayport cables to get full 2K 144Hz on my 2019 16MBP in office. Lucikly we have several hubs as well in office, so I got to play with them and pick a good one for home use that also does 144Hz.

  • Would this product allow an m1 mac mini to connect to three displays? That's where I'm stuck at the moment.
