Did I Get a Used Apple Watch Series 6 from JB Hi-Fi - Limited Warranty Expiry Date less than 1 year

Hi - I purchased the Apple Watch series 6 44mm with stainless steel and cellular from the deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/704946

The watch came shrink wrapped but box was a little banged up which I put down to shipping.

Anyway - having paired the phone - from the watch app on the iphone, when I choose General - About - Limited Warranty Expiry Date - It shows a date of 24/3/2023
when I would have expected it to show 15/6/2023 - a year from the date I first activated the watch.

I suspect then that someone has purchased the watch then returned it. Is anyone else seeing such a date anomaly?

This thread described a similar occurrence - although the watch hadn't even been reset

The other thing I wish I had known about is that you need to be on a post-paid plan with Telstra, Vodafone, or Optus in order to realistically use the watch as intended. If you are on a prepaid plan, you are essentially S-o-o-L - and need to go down the route of setting up the watch as part of a family setup and then getting the $9.99 per month Truphone plan. The issue is though once you configure the watch as part of a family setup, you have no ability to add any debit or credit cards to the Wallet.

All in all, this Apple watch experience has been quite a let down - and I suspect I will return it - particular if that date anomaly indicates it is second hand.

My advice would be to call Apple, or go into an Apple store, and ask them what their records say. Then you can go back to JB and talk to them.

    • Maybe take the receipt with you, to prove that you purchased a unit on date 14/6/22. See if they can extend the date out of goodwill. Otherwise, Return it to JB for a full refund.

Yes some retailers have shrink wrap machines.

Note to self: Don't buy Apple Watches from JB Hi-Fi
Honestly, I would have rejected the watch purely because of the fact that it was shrink-wrapped and does not have that Apple green arrow pull thing. Like AdosHouse said, Apple can check the records.

2 years ago I bought an iPhone XS from Mobileciti that claimed to be new. The device was shrink-wrapped, had significant amounts of dust inside, the protective film was misaligned and a little mark on the stainless steel edge. I suspect it was actually one of their open-box devices. Customer service said it's normal and it comes like that from their supplier which is bs because Apple would let such a thing happen to new devices. (End of rant lol).

I couldn't give up my Apple Watch just because it lets me keep my phone on silent and never miss an alert. It doesn't even audibly vibrate, it taps you on your wrist

  • Get the record from Apple and get a refund from JB, their return systems aren't properly checked at all and on sold like this all the time. I can guarantee they won't have a problem refunding it

  • I had something similar occur - I bought a new iMac from Mediaform (Authorised Apple Australia retailer) in 2019 and before opening it/using it, I checked the serial number out on Apple's Self Solve website and the result returned was the warranty had commenced a few months prior. I queried this with Mediaform who were adamant it was brand new/unused/unopened so I raised this with Apple. Apple didn't provide an answer on why this occurred but advised they would be happy to correct this, if I provided a copy of the receipt (which I did).

The weird thing was - the box was in perfect condition and had all the special Apple "pull seals" on it, in addition to being shrink wrapped. I have a friend who used to work as phone support for Apple and she said an error was probably made when an Apple was providing phone support to someone else and keyed in the wrong serial number (typo) which just happened to be mine. Not sure if that's plausible either as I've never heard of Apple activating devices for people.

  • I bought a new Macbook that had a warranty less than i expected. Called apple, was asked to email my receipt & they sorted it out. Apple have fantastic after sales support.

ACL guarantees that the watch is fit for purpose for a reasonable time. A reasonable time is usually +1Y

JB has to comply with this no matter when the watch was first activated.

    • @rektrading *ACL guarantees that the watch is fit for purpose for a reasonable time. Apple Australia deem that when applied to most of their products, a reasonable time is usually +1Y

      Corrected this for you ;)
Apple can be insanely stubborn on trying to push a defined +1 year for ACL on ALL of their products. An exception is where the fault is common/well document - they're then happy to provide up to three additional years, in some cases but will then enforce a hard cut-off, even if you are attempting to claim warranty for the well-documented issue. Had that happen on that Macbook butterfly keyboard issue and faulty reflective screen coating - I never thought to raise it until I stumbled across a mention on the forums that Apple were replacing laptops with these issues even outside of the 1 year warranty period. Upon raising it with Apple and escalating it to a Mnaager in store (even got their business card because I threatened to lodge a dispute with QCAT), their line was that they acknowledged the issues with my laptop were based on a manufacturing defect but as I was a few months over their defined 'ACL period' for these issues, they couldn't help me. I would've taken it further to QCAT but I got extremely busy at work and managed to improve the LCD appearance by 'cleaning' (removing) the reflective coating and ending up getting a decent price when I sold it.

  • I have dmd you op. Just had a question.
