Good for cats but there are usb-chargeable ones now - bit more expensive but much more convenient if you don't have button cell batteries

Beware if buying this as a cat toy - some argue it drives them crazy:

“The potential problem with these toys comes because the cat can never “win” the game. Even if a cat catches the dot there’s nothing there. The cat gets all worked up with no resolution — every time. Even in the wild, a hunting cat will catch the prey now and then. But there’s no catching that alluring, fast-moving red dot!”

Sounds like the housing market at the moment.

Do you mean I need to take my dog to a cat therapist?

        They both have 4 legs.

        So yes.

How dare you limb shame my cat

Only for a Cat scan and Lab report….lol

        • +1

          oh, that's ruff.

My solution was to hide some treats around and lead my cat to them with the laser.

    • You could say it would be catastrophic

    • Beware if buying this as a cat toy - some argue it drives them crazy

could also drive some people crazy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvY1v4_R_iM

    • You can just praise them after their final pounce.

    🤣🤣🤣

  • I'm not keen on button batteries - prefer something recharegeable, but I'm looking for something for kids soccer coaching - to highlight where they need to stand / run etc.
Can anyone recommend something fairly cheap that would be effective at up to 30m or so, please?

I've read that green is more powerful - but I'm not trying to highlight stars or objects miles away, so I'm not sure that matters so much.

    • Any laser point is useless if you're playing in bright light… especially at 30m

      • Thanks for that feedback. Good to know for daytime training.

We train under floodlights at this time of year though - I've seen another coach use one quite effectively at a coaches coaching session (at a distance of maybe 15m), and wish I'd asked him where he'd got it from. But as he was a professional coach I had already decided his would likely be a lot more expensive than my end of the market.

They are also illegal. The are prescribed as a prohibited weapons under legislation.

      • +1

        Wrong
It's got nothing to do with the colour, just the power which is capped at 1mW

        • -2

          RIGHT

A study done by researchers at RMIT University in Melbourne, Victoria, found that inexpensive green laser pointers had output power up to 127 times the Australian legal limit of 1 milliwatt.

          • +2

@jv: Just because you can buy cheap lasers that don't perform to spec doesn't change the fact that colour has nothing to do with the law.

          • +1

@jv: I should perhaps rephrase: I'd read green is more effective or more visible. At least, that's what I inferred.

JV does raise the valid point about being wary of power output though, and my earlier search yielded results where the item was being sold as <1mW in the title, but in the decription it was <5mW (eBay, of course).

    • Olight has a laser pointer pen that looks decent.

      • $129!
Thanks, but I'm only a volunteer community coach. My budget would probably go to $12.99 for something I knew would work.
Well, maybe ~$20, but definitely not that much.

        • Read up on the laws, you might be exempt for teaching purposes…

          https://www.police.nsw.gov.au/online_services/firearms/laser…

        • I found some on Amazon around $25 that should do the job

          • @RegentHoney: Good to have your opinion on the $25 ones, thanks.
Anything cheaper that might work though? This is OzBargain afterall ;) If a $10 or $15 one does the job…

The $25 ones I saw said they were suitable for astronomy or had ranges of several miles - which I expect would be totally overkill for my needs.

            • @sam buster: Hmmm might be able to get one off eBay for cheaper. I’m pretty sure they’re all the same generic one with different prices. I’ve had one of them that takes AA batteries and it worked great!

are these good enough to flag down police helicopters?

  • +1

Jaycar found a container of new old stock from 1995?

  • Do 'people' still use these at cinemas?

  • Sadly we’re unable to process it. Recent legislation changes mean that we’re unable to sell any products containing button batteries. As a result, all of our stock of the laser pointers has had to be disposed of.
