Best Duffel/Backpack for Uni Use

So basically, I've been looking at getting a new Duffle bag for uni use. However, I need it to be one of those ones that can turn into a backpack too, as to me, over the shoulder is uncomfortable for long periods of time.
I came across the PeakDesign offerings, and the travel dufflepack is not only too big, but it's literally 400 bucks. Their smaller 35L travel duffel is great, but the cheapest I can find it for is 223, and my budget is 175, also, people have said that it's backpack straps are quite uncomfortable.

So preferably, it should be 25L or over, have backpack straps, plus duffel bag carry options, and be under 175. I'm probably going to use it for literally everything (gym, uni, work etc.) so if it's built pretty well that would be great.

Do you guys have any experience with such bags? Should I just get a large backpack?

Thanks for the help!

the conversion types like this will never be as comfortable as a normal backpack, as it's just a duffel bag with straps on it, normal backpacks are designed to carry the weight better over the back. newer ones also tend to have a lot of padding, whereas it doesn't look like this has any, but i don't doubt it's durable.

i have bought from these guys before, they're good.

  • Osprey porter 30? Maybe not duffel-like enough though

No. You don't want to be mixing your smelly gym stuff with laptop and work stuff and packed lunches etc.

A $20 Kmart bag will do for gym: https://www.kmart.com.au/product/355l-duffle-gym-bag-black-4…

Get a decent backpack for everything else. Not sure why you want a duffel one for work/uni.

    • Having different bags is probably not an option. Depending on my classes I either gym morning and go straight to uni, or gym in the arvo after uni. I live 1hr+ by train, so going home to get a different bag is probably not an option. Same goes for work. Currently, I'm using one of those sling bags (little kids call them library bags?) and I shove it in my main bag after gym. My main bag is some off brand bag, but it's lasted me for years, and is just now starting to fall apart.

  • I've got one of the PD duffel bags. It's not that comfy in backpack mode.

Have a look at osprey bags.

  • It's just out of your budget and OOS online, but something like the 30L Oneplanet Tuff Nut would probably fit the bill. It's a much better duffel than backpack (minimal pockets and zero padding), but the straps aren't terrible for a convertible. They have a shop on Little Bourke near the other outdoor places that might be worth a look.

Similarly, the Henty sports backpack has dirty/clean sections with an expandable internal divider. I've managed a laptop/office stuff in it with gym gear before, but wouldn't want to do it regularly. It isn't a duffel, but is a better backpack for doing double duty.

But tbh I'd just get a better backpack for uni (eg with pockets and laptop padding) and keep my gym gear in a smaller bag, rather than faff with trying to do everything in a single bag.
