  • Sooooo many heads go CLUNK very quickly on refurbished HDD and they ware out faster no worth cheaping out your better buying half the storage and compressing all your files

    • Good for gaming if you need 16tb of games storage and dont care if it dies 🤣😂 or a lot of p%#n you want to keep as a shitty backup

      • Oh I back mine up to the cloud, I found this really good free provider call p%#nhub.

  • USD$225=AUD$235?

  • If it's $379 not worth

    • pre-much, $480ish new from newegg i think

      • AUD $521.40 @ newegg

No, just no. Refurb, and reseller on US Amazon. Higher than usual risk of failure and likely headache to get refund.

Why would a bunch of modern, high capacity HDDs already have been refurbed? I honestly can't think of any reason other than an enterprise buyer discovered a defective batch or something. Anyone know why else that could be?

    • +1

They've been out for exactly 3 years now. Not uncommon for enterprise to refresh drives after 2 or 3 years solid use. These could be out of warranty, well used load/cycle count or just precautionary replaced. Possibly even gone for larger ones. Or abused for Chia mining and now dumping stock.

As others have said, not a good idea to chance it with a refurbed from random seller from USA.

      • True, most likely they aren't a refurb at all, they are 3 year old drives that still work, and the data centre sells them off to replace with fresh ones every so often.

I'd take my chances with the 'no warranty' shucked drives.

Probably ex Chia mined drives. Garbage warranty, not worth the risk.

How to you refurbished a HDD? Take it apart, give the disc a good clean, sand it, polish it, give it new gasket, re oil the ball bearings, seal it with helium ?

    • +2

A bit of wd40, realign the one's and zero's with some healing crystals. A bit of gaffa tape over the heads to stop them knocking, pop the cover back on an pop it under a Pete Evans covid lamp to get rid of any viruses.

  • 90 days warranty on a secondhand drive… yeah nah.

  • Refurb? At this price? Nope.

  • I’d bite for $100 AUD

  • I think if you place a very large magnet on the drive, it can perform 'as new'.

  • Just had one of these fail after <2 years in my NAS. Defo not a great experience and that was and new drive under moderate use. Refurb? In a word, nooooooooooo!

  • Yeah, no. Don't buy second hand drives from 3rd party sellers.

  • I dropped 3 of these bad boys in a computer store in Delaware and forgot to pick the up. Had to get some Parmesan cheese

  • These refurb drives probably have had most of their life written off by constant enterprise use. Wouldn’t touch

    Dont trust Seagate refurbished drives.
I have one of my Ironwolf NAS drive replace under warranty and was shocked to see the Seagate sent me a replacement drive which was clearly labelled as refurbished and only had 1 year warranty. From such a large and reputable company I did not expect such a practice and expected a brand new drive.
Anyways the refurbished drive lasted just a few weeks out of the 1 year warranty ( which is crap for a NAS drive ).
I'd never trust a refurbished drive again.

This is completely normal, and all Hard Drive makers do this occasionally - you usually receive a new drive in return, but sometimes not.
