Combined tablet and laptop functions

Apologies for cross-posting, but couldn't find this on previous forums.

My very old Samsung Tablet is too slow, has no available memory, so needs to be replaced. I use it for a few basic card games, reading, and watching things like ABC in bed. Likewise, my ancient all-in-one HP pavilion 23 touchscreen needs replacing. It's used for Office software, teams, etc., emails, and googling. I have a work laptop.

As you can see, my IT needs are very modest.

I'd like to replace both the desktop and tablet with one machine that has the functions of both. I like the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 WiFi 256GB with a pen but would I be able to use it like a laptop or desktop to connect to monitors, etc. for Office functions? Some of my work colleagues have Surfaces for work but they say they are unreliable and overpriced (the Surfaces, not the colleagues, although it is arguable).

Size would be 10 -12" screen, budget around 1500, plus keyboard if needed, for the computer. Monitor and port (found out this is a 'docking station') in addition to that.

I'm an Android user, and my budget would probably preclude any Apple products in any case.

Would appreciate any suggestions.

I am working, so will only be checking this forum from time to time, so apologies in advance for any delays in responding.

  • Was a Dell Latitude 7390 2 in 1 with 13" screen the other day on here but a refurb for like $500. I am sure plenty of 2 in 1s for under $1500. Lenovo Yoga book is one.

    • Thanks. I had a Dell 2-in-1 a couple of years ago and liked it. Very pricey at the time. Didn't try apps on it, though, as it was for work. Can 2-in-1s use apps?

Samsung Galaxy Tabs & phones have "Dex" mode which basically gives you a "Windows-like" experience on Android. You get a window manager, a taskbar and a mouse pointer with full keyboard shortcut support. It's pretty neat and while it's a gimmick to most people, you might find it useful. If you own a Samsung phone you can try out yourself and connect your mobile phone to a monitor and test how Office 365 works on Dex.

The iPad Pro Gen3 from 2021 (M1 chip) is a worthy consideration. It's a little pricey at $1149 but Apple's new Stage Manager now gives iPads the ability to multi-task and connect to external monitors (previously connecting a monitor would just duplicate the display, as opposed to extending it).
Apple keeps their devices updated for a little longer than Samsung does — usually around 5 years.

Chromebooks are also something worth looking at. The Lenovo Duet 5 Chromebook is very good value at $499 and it has a OLED display, and it's a detachable (keyboard comes off).

  • Cheers. These are some good options to consider. Probably not the Apple, but the Lenovo looks pretty good - amazingly low price, even for the 8GB c.f. the Samsung. Why is that?

  • What about a used Asus Chromebook C302 flip? I reckon that ticks all your boxes? Used to have one and the flip ability works well for lazy bed tv…

    • Ta. Looking for a new model, though, and preferably with a touchscreen.

      • No worries. The linked one has a touch screen.

        • Missed that!

          • @Lastchancetosee: I think all the 'flips' have touch screen. That's maybe the point of the flip??? :)

            • @oscargamer: Makes sense. Like I said, not a great tech-head here ;)

                I just bought a Macbook M1 for $1300 from here, for child number 2 … https://www.apple.com/au_edu_800611/store

I'm not an apple person, but I'm told this is a very good machine

                • @oscargamer: We've got a Montague Capulet thing with Apples and Androids at home. I'm still pretty set on Android, mainly because I'm comfortable with the operating systems after so long, but the kids are gradually going over to the dark side.

I've still got an academic colleague's business card with his title as 'Apple Evangelist' after winning an Apple teaching award. Kind of says it all for me.
