iPad Pro 10.5 or iPad Air 3?

Genuine iPad question for iPad aficionados : 2017 iPad Pro 10.5 or 2019 IPad Air 3?

I have a choice of the above 2 options. Presuming lightly used or new battery in both.

Would be used for kids media consumption & school work so important factors would be:
1. battery life
2. charging time,
3. Split screen
4. Emails
5. FaceTime and iMessage

Which would you choose and why?

Comments

  • How many emails and messages per day?

    • As many as they get on their smart phones

    • so tell us tech lord why would that matter?

      • important factors would be:
        4. Emails
        5. FaceTime and iMessage

        • you asked how many

  • Ipad air 3 is newer and has an a12 chipset (which was put in the ipad 8 last year). That means that it will be supported for longer and you could keep for longer if well looked after.

    • Should be well looked after, but the pro does have a better speaker array.

We have an IPad Air 3 mostly used by a gamer teen. It’s a fabulous device and supports the apple pen too. Being a newer device I would opt for it, as it will be supported for longer. Once apple doesn’t support them they start going downhill as apps don’t get supported anymore etc. The iPad Pro model is coming up to 5 years against 3.

You didn't say how old the kids are, but unless there's a direct point of comparison, they won't know the difference. Besides, you don't need a better speaker array for…

        1. battery life
        2. charging time,
        3. Split screen
        4. Emails
        5. FaceTime and iMessage
  • How is a 2019 iPad Gen 3? (Unless as fozzie guessed, it's an iPad Air 3)

    • Your right is Air 3. Thanks and fixed

As someone who looks after a fleet of Apple devices for a living, trust me when I say you're better off grabbing the newer model, the Air 3. Yes, the Pros are top tier tablets, but supportability is key. Apple are genuinely great at supporting their older models, but the iPad Pro you mentioned is 5 years old and I'd say on the cusp of being end of support.

You will be fine for the upcoming iOS 16 release, but I'd put a question mark against iOS 17 support and all but guarantee it won't get iOS 18 in a few years time. This isn't necessarily the end of the world, but it does mean you start losing out on new features and functions, and security patching and fixes gets a bit murkier (that said, Apple did continue providing critical updates for even the old iPhone 6 models stuck on iOS 12 - as I said they are pretty good compared to Android mfgs)

Given you mention its for kids and school requirements, you may well find that they'll require you to be current for compatibility reasons, so it's generally safer to grab the newer model imho especially if you want it to last you for a few years of school. Plus Apple really practices trickle down tech; all the premium features in the Pro range eventually finds its way into the Airs and so on, which is why even the newest Air has the M1 chipset that the new Pros got last year.

Also a personal observation: I have a private (i.e. non work) iPad Pro 10.5" that I've been using for 4 years. It's still a rock solid tablet but it's starting to struggle a little bit due to the lack of RAM, and it's battery is fairly cactus at this point. It's not unsual for it to drop ~10-15% from a 30-40 minute browsing session for example. I'm at the point where I'll probably upgrade when next year's model drops, so just thought I'd share that.

  • iPad Pro is OK for Uni, but overkill for high school. If money is not a concern, buy the iPad pro.

iPad Air 3: is not a good choice for school works. The battery is not reliable and tends to die after about one year. This problem does not happen with the regular iPad nor the Pro version.

So, personally I won't be buying the pro nor the air 3 version. I would buy the iPad Base model instead.

      • If the OP wanted to wait, yeah sure.

We have kids at school age and we have burnt through a number of iPad Air version x.
It didn't matter which version of iPad Air it is. I reckon Apple must have cut some corners with the battery to shave some weight off the iPad.
while the base model never have any battery problem.
We also bought the Pro version for 1 kid who studies high school art. It was him who told us it was a complete waste of money. He swapped it with his brother who didn't study art but wanted the Pro version to brag.

Initially we bought fancy pretty extra thin covers, expensive leather cover for the iPads. The kids loved them for a very short term.
None of them survived the accidental drops.
A few weeks in and we had 2 cracked screens. It was the kids who demanded the big bulky cover for max protection. They didn't care about the weight as we thought they would.

One iPad has a soft rubber cover that makes the iPad looks like a muffin. That one survived for 4 years of daily repeated use, lots of drops, and only suffered a few scratches on the screen. The cover itself is worn out but he will not have any of the fancy leather cover.
