For someone who never played this, but played many similar games around when this was famous, is this still worth it?

Or should I just enter the series from IV?

      • +1

As someone who played III a lot when it came out, and sucks at II and IV, they're all still enjoyable if you're into RTS

A lot of competitive play still, $7 bucks is cheap as, for all the content II has

        • +2

Thank you so much for the reply mate.

Yes, I quite enjoy strategy I think. I loved playing C&C generals back than and similar but different I also loved dota. And HoN too but they closed the servers and took the game offline :(

Got it at 78% off for the AOE2 "bundle" since I already had AOE (2013). Save a bit more using this.

Buy Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition + Age of Empires II (2013)

    • Not sure if I get this but buy this on steam or Microsoft do you think?

I think buying on steam potentially give you a better price if there was ever a bundle with this in it? Is that the moral of the story?

      • +2

Bought on steam for obvious reasons…. Have heaps of steam wallet so it was a no brainer

  • +19

One of the best games ever made in my opinion. Played this for hours as a kid

    • Is it not too dissimilar to the Civilization series?

      • +1

totally different gameplay style, Civ is turnbased, this is RTS

        • -2

aoe2 also much more balanced for multiplayer and has a nice competitive scene, if that's your cup of tea, i wouldn't recommend it because you'll be playing against sweaty nerds with 20 years of experience

civ is more a single player gambling game, which is why multiplayer is a bit of a shitshow, he who doesn't gamble a good start rage quits. great game for chilling out single player tho

      • Very dissimilar. CivV seemed good at first but after going on the forums you learn

        • the most important thing is hitting the restart button until you get a monster start
        • you shouldn't build most units, just mass archers/compies/xbows and tech towards this
        • pick liberty then whatever then rationalism
        • the AI is dumb as bricks and all the difficulty level changes is how much of an unfair advantage it has
        • the AI can really never run out of resources
        • the AI cheats on the visibility rules
        • the above 3 don't matter because it's not really playing the game, it's part of the scripting to keep you playing. It'll let you win if you play long enough

    • Start the game already!

      • King of the losers

  • Would the laptop I got from https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/705993 work with this. Not playing on the 12' screen of course. Good to relive the nostalgia.

Barely. Other replies must be misinformed sorry. I've done an analysis of over 100 ranked benchmark scores and found single thread rating to be the biggest predictor of performance. That CPU has a single thread score of 6261 on https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-8350U…. It will not be able to smoothly play games with 8 people. 4 or under should be fine. Singleplayer is more demanding than multi.

Try installing the game and playing a game with a post-imperial start with 7 extreme AI and wait until the AI are max pop. That'll give you a good indication of the worst case scenario. You can refund the game under 2 hours

  • I'm hooked onto AoE4, haven't played the prequels though.

    • +15

You're missing out. Get on AoE2.

      • Ok awesome for $7 sounds very promising!

        • Aoe2 is the greatest RTS game ever made fr

    • +11

I got hooked on 2 and cannot progress past that, to me its the zenith of AoE

    • AOE2 is the original legend!

  • +2

It’s far from definitive as they’re releasing new DLC for it every few months.

    • I'm not sure they're releasing DLC for AoE2 that frequently :P

    • +1

they already released a 'remastered' edition, this is more 're-remastered'

    • Depends if this includes those dlc

  • +2

Have never played any of the AOE series but I love Rise of Nations.
Would anyone be able to comment on any similarities between the 2 or should I just try it and see?

    • As a fan of both, I think RON takes the take but both play very similar. Same Rock Paper Scissors style unit combat and for $6 odd you can’t go wrong can you? You’ve spent more money on worst 😝

Even at this price check the reviews before you buy. People are complaining that there is no LAN play and you need a solid Internet connection, with problems if even one of the players drop. People who use to play locally on LAN seem very salty. There are also complaints that recent updates have made it laggy (which may be fixed by now) and that the AI is bad and always has been. Finally one guy who seems to have experience with other games where the camera is difficult to control thinks this one is worse. I have no experience with the game, just passing on what I saw on the Steam reviews.

    • +2

The ai is extremely intelligent compared to past games. It'll switch gameplay and units to counter you. You're able to pick which ai you want to play with/against (Ai CD and So HD being the morons). "Ai" is the new intelligent ai. Throw them on extreme difficulty and you're in for a bad time.

At this price, it's absolutely no brainer. The new campaigns are well fleshed out too.

      • You said it. No brainer.

    • -1

Wow. Downvoted for that. Passing on some information. Talk about shooting the messenger. You lot aren't worthy of the time it's taking me to write these messages. Allow someone to be anonymous and look what you get. I guess anyone that lets popularity dictate what they can see here deserves what they get too. Go ahead. Throw away your ability to make an informed choice. What a bargain!?

      • I didn't downvote you but you were likely downvoted for passing on misinformation from random sporadic steam reviewers. The recent reviews show the game as "overwhelmingly positive". Probably doesn't help your cause that you said yourself that you've never even played the game. The updated ai completely fine, the game won't lag provided you're using the recommended hardware and the camera angle and control hasn't changed since 1999

        • -1

I didn't pass on misinformation and I totally resent your statement. Then you criticize me for admitting I haven't played and telling everyone exactly what the source of the information I passed on is. You can't have it both ways. What I did is go through the negative reviews and report back what problems people are having. A game, even if it is
free, can be a frustrating pain in the rear end that saps precious downtime, which some people don't have a lot of.

This is one of the most toxic boards I bother with. Anonymous downvoting ensures that it stays that way and the admins clearly don't care because it works for them business model wise. I've tried to be helpful on a lot of occasions and sometimes it is appreciated but just as often I get this ridiculous childish downvoting to bury inconvenient truth.

I should just keep my mouth shut and let the lot of you make uninformed choices because that's exactly what you deserve. Justify it all you like. The kindest phrase that comes to mind is "No good deed goes unpunished". But there's another one involving unappreciated pearls that's probably better.

Yes there is a relatively steep learning curve but I honestly think aoe2 is one of the best games of all time.

Ranked game play is a lot of fun after you find your level. The constant back and forth is amazing and you can usually point to the exact moment you either made a mistake which loses the game or the right one which results in the win 10 minutes later.

Can't go wrong at this price. Game is constantly updated and the pro scene is genuinely one of the least toxic I've ever seen.

  • +1

Its a great version of a great game. Spent countless hours on this game. The AI has been improved in this latest version and can be quite a challenge.

  • +1

So does this include all DLC or is the name misleading?

    • Can't remember from the top of my head but a number of expansions and new civs are included, some are not. There's a European expansion that won't be included and also the new indian expansion was was only released a short time ago.

What's included will keep you busy for at least a solid 200 hours..

    • +1

DE was released in November 2019 and includes all the DLC released for the original and all the DLC released for the 2012 HD edition. 35 Civs in total.

It does not include the three DLC packs released for DE.

  • great game, even on skirmish mode.

  • +3

For a game that is very like AOE but is free and surprisingly polished, try 0AD

It is a great game and you can always look up youtube vids for an intro.

  • +1

If only the DLC got the same percentage discount

  • it's better than ever, modernised all time classic.

    • I got a buzz out of PoE.

  • Hey guys I don't have a gaming laptop but this is one of my all time favorite games. Will Intel(r) Iris(r) xe graphics card, 8gb ram, i7 @ 2.80 GHz be good enough to run it with no issues online?

    • +1

      Should be enough.

  • +2

    Wololo!

  • Anyway to play this on a Mac?

  • Is there a bundle with all DLCs that's cheaper than buying them separately?
