  • I realise it's probably tedious but can you access the web on them if you need to?

64gb Telstra Evoke Plus 2 smartphone cost me less.

  • Is this a TRUE dumbphone in that it lasts around 5 days without a recharge like my 3G $30 Samsung dumbphone… or have they added a few features making it a battery hog?

    • no. no phone is a true dumbphone any more. 4g and higher turn phones into battery hogs, 2g no longer possible as the network has shut down, while 3g is soon to be shut down as well.

      • 3g is soon to be shut down as well

So my imported Xperia 1iii which Telstra don't allow VoLTE on, will become useless soon?

        • Funny Alasdair mentioned that, because I used to use a 2G Nokia 3310. For months Vodafone kept sending me texts they were… "shutting 2G down so the phone you are currently using will no longer work." (I guess they could tell what model of phone was connected to their network.

Anyway, several months ago they began doing the same thing to this 3G one I mentioned above. Only this time the texts said: "Your phone may not work with…." (May not work, not will not work.) The "deadline" passed a few weeks ago but that 3G phone is still working as before.

I did read somewhere that "some" of the 3G band was being reallocated. So who knows… Maybe that means not all the 3G band is being reallocated and so will still work depending on our location.

  • Bought the Alcatel 3080T, unlocked version of the Optus X Lite and made by TCL. One week battery life and VoLTE. Great escape from the pocket PC and excellent call quality. $50 on eBay. Love it !

For those who are wondering what use there is for a 'dumb phone', I' had been using the Nokia Flip 2720 in the past as my primary phone for a few months as I was getting anxious of all the notifications and had OCD-like behaviour of always checking my phone for news and notifications. I got distracted so easily and although it seems like everybody else seems fine with it, I just felt overwhelmed and I really did feel like I had OCD.

    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/nokia-2720…

I chose the Noika flip 2720 for several reasons.
    1. It's a Noika and my first phone was a 3310. So to me it seemed like a legacy 'dumb phone'.
    2. It had batteries that could easily be replaced. Caution - I used it as a personal hotspot for my laptop and it drains the battery in a few hours - so have a charger nearby or a spare battery handy.
    3. It did have application such as Facebook/Whatsapp/Google Maps but unlike smartphone touchscreens, it's incredible tedious to type out everything. So while it's not so good for consuming social media, chatting continuously etc. it was good for those situations that were more urgent - which is EXACTLY what I wanted in a dumb phone.

After a few months, I felt somewhat 'disconnected' to the world a lot more. I wasn't completely detached from the internet of course, but the only way I could describe the feeling is it's as if you're camping far away or staying at a retreat in the mountains where there was limited internet access. Things just seem a little less 'noisey' and more quiet….you can focus a lot more on what's in front of you and live 'in the moment'

It will take a while getting used to the keyboard again. But I promise…. productivity will be much better once you can work your life around it. One of the few things that frustrated me was my access to my bank's online system, although I'm sure there are ways to work around that too.

I loved seeing people stare at me while I was on my phone thinking that I was such a weirdo. Also a very good conversation starter.

    • Great review.

    • Awesome Fliedlice, thanks for sharing!!

  • I got this for an elderly relative, does it have inbox and sent messages as they couldn't find it in the menus?
Couldn't find any info online but i will have a look myself on the weekend.

    • Check page 12 of the amazingly comprehensive (!!) user guide:
      https://www.nokia.com/phones/en_au/support/api/pdf/nokia-225…

Select the messaging icon, and all messages appear there. Each to a different number is it's own conversation thread, showing received and sent.

      • Ok thanks, hopefully they can deal with that, I expected simpler/better from a nokia.

        • It is simple - the main icon in the menu. Once they're used to typing on a number pad, it'll be fine.

  • damn, no GPS!

    • You could get an actual GPS unit for your car!
