whats the problem with third party? signal stability?

    • no idea from experience, but going by the description which I just added:

"fibre-optic core that retains lightness and flexibility relative to copper-based cables"

I haven't tried the 3rd party options but have this cable, it's super flexible.

However Better off putting the cash towards a good bridgeable wifi router and play wirelessly, haven't touched my cable in at least a year!

      • +1

What router are you using? I have the Xiaomi AX1800, will that be good enough?

        • Yeah that's exactly what I'm using, got it for $67 and use it solely for AirLink to my Quest. My PC is via Gigabit LAN to my main switch, then LAN into that router. Works great!

        • I've tested latency in Virtual Desktop and it's all in the green, and I notice no lag or issues.

This one is an active fibre optic cable to be lighter, thinner and more flexible than a normal cable. Any cable will work as long as it can maintain a good USB 3.0 connection though — for very long cables like this type that generally means it needs to be a well-made active (powered) cable.

There are some 3rd-party cables marketed as being specifically for Oculus Link that work fine and are far cheaper, though not as thin and light. Edit: There’s a list of cables with ratings here.

It’s definitely worth considering getting a good WiFi hardware setup and using wireless streaming, though (via Air Link or Virtual Desktop). There are disadvantages but in good circumstances it’s pretty hard to distinguish from wired Link (which is already streaming compressed video with higher latency than headsets with a native display connection), and the advantages and convenience of of being untethered are quite considerable. If your current hardware isn’t good enough you could probably get suitable WiFi hardware for around the price of this cable.

I will say the official one is really nice, being fiber optic, it's so light and thin. That being said, I never use it, once I went wireless I can't go back
3rd party cheap ones (or any cheap usb-c) have a greater chance to cause damage

    • I have had this since the oculus quest 2 came out. its a solid cable works very well. just make sure you computer has a real usb c 3.2 port.

I have this and use it with an Oculus Quest 2 but the battery drains as it's being used. Apparently there's been a problem with the official cable charging while you play. My friend has a usb A to C on the quest on for Oculus Link and his charges while he plays with no issues.
I bought the Kiwi one but haven't had a chance to see if it charges properly yet

      let us know please! thanks

      • Apparently it's being delivered today so I'll see how it goes

I use Virtual Desktop to play wirelessly. If you have good wifi, that's a much better spend of 27 dollars IMO.

    • Do you notice the quality difference between cable and wireless?

      • +2

I never had the cable. But I have an HTC Vive and for me, if there is a quality difference, it's offset by how convenient wireless is.

    • +3

You don't need Virtual Desktop anymore. You can play air link straight from the app. I did notice an improvement upgrading to a Wifi6 access point though.

      • it's true, but VD is just better, well except the annoying load music it plays when wifi isn't connected, so annoying

  • +2

Not worth it with airlink now. Even if you still want to use it, it's very finicky and may work sometimes.

The cable itself is good. Just too much for what it is

  • Should I buy the cable now or wait until Amazon drops the price on the convenience bundle?

Edit: Bought anyways for the free month of Xbox Gamepass.

  • Virtual Desktop is amazing if your router is up to snuff.

I've also been using this for a couple of years now and have had zero issues with it.

    Much cheaper.

does it charge the headset while using it?

      • -1

I've never checked, but I don't remember ever having to stop to charge the headset while I was using the cable.

I've had the BoboVR battery packs for a while now.
