Floor Mats. Holding Them in Place?

New(ish) ute has vinyl floors. Came with factory rubber mats (and a tank of fuel) and the rubber mats are very slippery on the floor. I could take them out but that makes it harder to remove dirt from the floor. Having mats means I can just empty them out occasionally.

Anyone got any tips on how to make them less slippery? Hold them in places somehow? The drivers mat has some tabs that hold it in place fairly well.

  • There seems to be plenty of options for high quality aftermarket mats for utes/4WDs. Perhaps it's just a matter of finding one that's better fitting (slightly larger and heavier?) so that the edges hold it in place?

Buy Velcro tags from Bunnings and stick them to the mats to hold them in place.

Its a ute…. so hot glue gun!!!

  • Haven't tried for your purpose, but this type of material is quite grippy

  • Similar idea to JimmyF, we used to silicone the mats in the work utes and trucks. Sometimes you could just liberally apply silicone to the underside of the floor mats and it would adequately grip the vinyl, other times you had to add more to bond the two together, although sometimes it didn’t help much.

    • As in putting silicon onto the back of the mats allowing to cure? Like strips of it or a bit in each corner?

Yeah, silicone on back of mats and allowing it to cure. Generally we did zigzagging rows.

Make sure you use the galvanized nails. You don't want rust stains appearing from wet work boots.

  • Would a couple of bricks work?

  • I bought these and cut them to size. Make a cardboard template, cut to size with a box cutter and they don't move. Rubber backed and long wearing carpet.

One of these cut in half covers the back floor. Two in the boot etc. Missus loves the colour and pattern. I couldn't get mats at SC to fit my car and wasn't about to buy from the dealer.

    • Thanks. If I had carpet floors I’d be putting rubber in. When you work outdoors. Have kids that play football and regularly go to the beach or bushwalking carpets just get too dirty.

Possibly the best aftermarket rubber mat that you can find.
