Easy Place to Take The Kids to See Snow in Victoria?

I'm in SE suburbs and want to take the kids to see and play in the show for the first time.
Hopefully somewhere not too far because they're small, can be just a park type area to build snow men etc.

I've never been myself so I don't know what's good and easy to access. Or how to know of it's a good time to go 😐

Anyone with experience able to point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

Lake Mountain is probably the nearest, there is a toboggan park too. Next up is Mount Buller.

    • Agree, the tobogganing is great as well for the little ones but it can get very crowded., so best to get there as early as possible. Ideal is to spend the night in Marysville and then go in first thing before all the day tripping hoards arrive

Being in the south east Mt Baw Baw might be closer than the other mountains depending how far out of town you live.

Lake Mountain, Mt Baw Baw or Mt Buller.

We went Lake Mountain last week, no real snow but they have the machines running and was pumping out the ice crystals.

Going Mt Baw Baw next week and hopefully we get to see some real snow but the weather report is not looking good for that to happen.

Stop over at a nearby town beforehand to rent the clothing and shoes and snow chains (if applicable).

Mt Donna Buang is an easy daytrip.

    • Yeah for sure. It's free and I don't think you need chains most of the time.

Easiest option and from memory it is free. Just have to get your timing right for when there is fresh snow up there.

Went here recently. Go early to avoid a 5 hour queue.

Mt Buller definitely the best IMHO - Mt Baw Baw is also okay as well. You can easily do both in a day trip (around a 3 - 4 hour drive). I know what you mean by "park with some snow", probably like what you see in movies filmed in NYC or Boston…etc., but we don't get that sort of snow here. You really have to go up the mountains to get snow and up there, the weather can be really shitty (especially for little kids), so definitely be prepared.

  • Explain to the little ones they will be cold and, probably, wet so they need to rug up. Also make sure you take a change of clothes to come home in case they get saturated. I would, definitely, change socks and shoes to come home to avoid chilled feet.

They already live in Melbourne, so being cold and wet is not something new.

Yeah, but we don’t tend to see a lot of snow.

For the effort it takes to get there and back, queuing, fuel costs etc., you're better off doing a full weekend trip so the kids can enjoy the snow for couple days

    • Yea that's true. Will have to check out somewhere close by if the weather cools down. We seem to be having a few warm days this month. Damn global warming. 😅

Not what you asked for - but perhaps an easy alternative if you have little kids and limited time?

    Springvale Snow Fest

    • Cheers could be an easier trip. I imagine it would be super busy tho. But will check it out.
