Can this be used as a personal hotspot?

  • +1

How's the battery life on these ?

  • Can anyone confirm if the old large sim card would fit in this? Asking for my grandmother (seriously) :)

    • +2

It's unlikely, but many shops will have a SIM cutter. Or if you're feeling brave, scissors will also do the trick.

    • I'm guessing you are too young to remember when SIM cards were the size of a credit card?

      • That was because phones back then were huge and weighed up to 250g. Thank goodness we have tiny phones now.

        • +2

          You mean 2.5kg

          • -1

            @itshammer: They meant 36Kg, unless you're talking about hand-helds - though I don't know what the Deutsche Reichsbahn's 1926 units weighed.

        • +1

          Was that irony?
250g is about right for the phones with credit-card SIM., ie GSM. They soon shrunk to 80g.
But now the latest iphone or samsung flagship weighs 228g! And still has far worse battery life :-)

          • @bargaino: You can still get similar battery life on even smaller phones by enabling power-saving mode and limiting background processes.

Just go to the Telstra store and they'll replace the Sim with a tri-fit

    • +1

If your grandfather’s SIM is not a tri-cut (ie has the ability to punch out either a Mini, Micro, or Nano SIM), then it’s probably not a 4G-enabled SIM, and wouldn’t help your grandfather anyway.

Just take it to a Telstra Store with suitable ID, and they’ll swap it for a replacement SIM.

      • Good point, guess off to the store she goes!!

Thanks for your comments everyone :)

    Good burner

    • one for the plug and one for the load

Previous comments said this won't work on a Telstra MVNO like ALDI mobile, so if you can't unlock it then it's useless unless you are with Telstra.

Limited band support AND is sim-locked to Telstra

    4G LTE
    VoLTE 700 / 1800 MHz with 4GX Cat 4

    3G UMTS
    850 MHz

So even if you can unlock it, if you're using NVMO that doesn't support VoLTE
You won't even able to make/receive phone calls if you're not on Telstra

  • Tool of trade for drug dealers nationwide.

    • +1

sadly you need ID to activate a sim, so not really useful for drug dealers, they're all on snapchat, whatsapp, messenger or any of the other numerous texting apps. drug dealers are better off with smartphones

      • "ID to activate a sim,"

Voda asks for a credit card if activating on-line even for prepaid, but others don't. It's not that hard to sneak a peak at someone's driving licence, and unless the providers have to provide such number to State authorities, I suspect they wouldn't be authorised to check anything other that it being a valid number…

        • Coles mobile does the same, I just port my number over to them last Friday, I found it way better than giving my driver licence details.

  • If you don't recharge the credit, for how long will it stay connected?

    • +1

6 months after your credit expires.

Does this work with Boost SIM?

    • +1

It should work with Boost as they run on the same network (Telstra)

    • I'm pretty sure Aldi won't work on this, so I doubt boost will.
Optus locked phones are more compatible with other Sims and work with Coles Sims

  • +1

you don't have to be old to appreciate these

  • Any low value long expiry plans with Telstra?

  • +1

There are some prepaid phones on sale @BigW including the Vodafone Nokia C01 for $59 which might be easier to unlock. Also $59 @OW.

  • would it work with circles?

    Got this + a Samsung A21s 128 for $5 each.
    Bargain - thanks.

    • Really Samsung a21? Do they still have, I'm looking to upgrade my work phone

      • Yes - West End QLD.
Not the S series but the A series (entry-level). Quite a steal !

        • Damn. I'm in Sydney.

    • Dang Glenelg SA showed up as having stock for the A21s went there and they didn’t have

  • Got on Telstra chat and they said it'll cost a fee to unlock so better to use it now and unlock after 6 months for $25

  • out of stock.

Could a phone like this run MS Teams?

    • +1

      Definitely not

  • Will Woolies Sims work in them?

    • dont think so but boost does
