Hi Guys,

Can anyone advise what would be the cheapest way to travel from the Sydney Domestic Airport to CBD? Uber, Taxi or public transport?

    How many people are travelling?

    • And what time of day (peak / off peak fares)?

    • 3 people. Arriving after 8 PM

I'll use Town Hall as a reference point.

        Train: $18.39 per person x 3 = $55.14
        Bus to Mascot then Train to Town Hall: $2.24 + $2.65 - $2.00 (Opal Transfer Discount) = $2.88 x 3 = $8.64
Walk 15 minutes to Mascot then Train to Town Hall: $2.65 x 3 = $7.95

        Generally for Uber / Taxis
Uber/DiDi: ~$30 (though they may have surges or promotions) - departing from the airport has a surcharge, going to the airport this might be a bit cheaper and change your calculations
        Taxi: ~$45

        • Train is generally the fastest — I use it when I'm by myself and in a rush and have luggage.
        • Bus/Train Combo depends on the schedule and how it's running on that particular day — my most commonly used, mainly if I don't have a lot of luggage and have time. At peak hours the bus can be very late caught in traffic but TripView is handy to check its status.
        • Uber/DiDi — if I have a lot of luggage or travelling with others and not worried about 5 pm traffic, it's the most convenient and not much slower than the train when there's no traffic.

Thanks for the detailed information. Would you know if Opal Card can be purchased at the airport?

  • If it is just you the train is probably the best and cheapest (albeit a walk with luggageto your cbd hotel). However if you have a group of 3 or 4 then the economics shift to Uber - plus convenience of door to door.

    • 3 in total. Will have a look at Uber. BTW, are the taxi fares comparable to Uber?

  • Trains are about $18.36 per person. But take note of the current train issues.

  • Check this page.

But also, depends on day, time and weather too (for cost and how long it'll take), due to factors like surge pricing, peak hour traffic etc.

Walking, maybe hitchhiking - it's free.

    • Happy to do if traveling alone, but not with a group of 3.

      walking is defo the cheapest

      • And it would only take about 90 minutes too, probably less in the evening.

          in this weather

          free shower too!

          positive yield!

If it's not raining, and you're wanting to avoid the Airport access fee, catch the (free) T-bus from domestic to international, then walk to Wolli Creek (20 minutes), catch the train from there.

Probably a bit faster to take the 420 bus from Domestic (outside T3) to Mascot Station then train it to the city. There should be a bus every 10-15 min.

You'll still avoid the airport access fee rip-off and avoid walking to Wolli Creek. The walk from International to Wolli Creek is sketchy if you don't know exactly where you're going. It will be dark most of the way after 8pm and you'll have to walk on a skinny path on a bridge along a busy road.

    • If it's not raining

Big if right there at the moment!

      (good tip though!)

There's the hack where you walk about 15 mins to the Mascot train station (may be stressful though if you have a lot of luggage and/or kids) saves the $10 airport surcharge.

I walk pretty quick and it takes me 20-25 with luggage (hiking bag).

If they don't have much luggage, take bus(420 I think) to nearest station.

Train to Mascot then bus from Mascot to airport

  • Yep, a cheap and convenient way is to catch the bus to Mascot then train to the city. The bus to Mascot is regular and reliable. Wouldn't be surprised if the airport money making machine tried to kill off that loophole. They make free options inconvenient. If you want a private car to pick you up at the airport they make you walk a long distance to the sanctioned pick up point.

  • When you get off your flight you will be stuffed, just get a cab, they normally have more room for luggage

  • Thanks all for the input. Here is what I have decided… If it is not raining, I will take the Bus to Mascot then Train to CBD. Otherwise, I will take Uber.

  • Check out private transfers.
    Prices start from about $50.
