Optus Increase by $4 Per Month

I've just received an email from optus which I've attached below.

I've got a contract with Optus till next year January. From my understanding was, that the contract is a two way street. I pay the bills, and they provide the service at the agreed cost during the contract. I've always understood that they can't change the terms until the plan expires.

Anyone got any insight?

Hi _______,

At Optus, we're committed to keeping Australians connected in the moments that matter, while continuing to offer choice and great value.

*We've been investing in our network to roll out Australia's fastest 5G, create innovative Living Network tools that put you in control, provide access to exclusive content, and to enable our new subscription management service, SubHub, that allows you to save on everyday costs like your Netflix subscription.

Our ongoing investment in better and new services, the growing usage of our network, and the widespread cost of inflation also experienced by Optus, means we've made the difficult decision to increase the price of our mobile plans.
From 8 August 2022, the price of your mobile plan will increase by $4 a month to $53/month. We'll also be adding 20GB additional data to your plan to provide more value, increasing your plans data inclusion to 80GB.

At this time we know that saving money is important and we have developed a range of options that will help you do this across all of your communication and streaming products and services. Here are 5 ways to save that many of our customers are taking advantage of:

Save on your subscription services
If you bundle your favourite subscriptions on Optus SubHub, you can save up to 10% on each eligible subscription, including your existing Netflix subscription. This could save you over $6 per month if you bundle 6 subscriptions.

Save on additional mobile plans
Bring your partner or family onto your account and you can save 25% on additional plan costs. This will save you and your family a minimum of $11.25 per month, per mobile service added.

Save on a new 5G device
Get the latest 5G phone at the best price. If you see a better price on a 5G phone, we'll match it with our 5G Phone Price Match Guarantee. We also have a range of device deals to help you save.

Save on upfront costs
If you buy a new phone with Optus Pay, you can pay it off over 12, 24 or 36 months, completely interest free. No need to pay the full amount upfront, leaving more money in your pocket when you buy.

Save when you travel and roam overseas
If you travel regularly, we've lowered our roaming costs by 50%, and are now only $5/5GB per day if you switch to one of our new Choice Plus subscription plans.
To discuss your options, or to talk through ways you can save, get in touch with our team by messaging us in My Optus app or calling us on 1800 502 375. Or see below for frequently asked questions.

I believe you're on a month to month for the plan but your phone is taken over 12, 24 or 36 months?

    • If that's the case (I'll check it), does that mean I can change providers and just pay my device off?

My understanding is that, unless you got the phone on promo pricing they usually take the RRP and divide it by how many months you took it over.

        • My freaking guy. Thank you.
This will save me money. Switching to Woolies Mobile now!

@muckingfuppet: Boost gives you the full Telstra network with 5G speeds and there is a deal for it right now on the first page.

            • @mapax: If you are fine with 4g, with Woolworths Mobile you get a monthly 10% off when you shop at Woolies.

At the end I end up paying ~$10/month for my plan.

              • @datafellows: Pretty good price and I would be happy with 4g but Telstra wholesale doesn’t cover some of my work areas, plus I rarely shop at Woolworths.

i spent 30 days on optus while i was churning a number between jb telstra contracts … was such a freaking terrible experience.

I've been lucky with optus. I'm on a 25/mth and got:
      - optus sports for the past 3 years
      - 5g access,
-credit for 6 months of netflix (which I cancelled and thus haven't paid for my plan for the past 3 months
      -12 months of amazon prime
      - extra 20gb for 12 months
-as well as the discount during covid in 2020

Might have to seek new pastures moving forwards soon though…

  • When you log into your Optus account you can find the docs you agreed to for the plan when you signed up. Read them and see what you agreed to and I am confident that they can increase the SIM plan cost as it is different to the phone contract where you effectively pay the phone off over the length of the contract based on being on some plan with optus of at least $XYZ as per the contract(s).

If you leave Optus then you will need to pay out the balance of the phone contract that you have not effectively paid.

Optus vary their contracts every few to 6 months so the contract(s) you agreed to may or may not be available now or the conditions are different.

There is likely a T&C to do with inflation and price increases, and this maybe a justification for the price increase.

      • +2

Never seen any Optus contract have any condition related to inflation.

  • My experience with post paid Optus is always DON'T, their systems at the margin are trash. Cable/HFC internet, post paid mobile plans…my experience, when I struck trouble, was dealing with company responses which were abusive and inaccurate. You'll end up in some sweatshop operator who will read the script and tell you to $%%& off. Luckily we have the TIO. Once they put a local 'executive' who worked the issue out.

    Horrible.

Buy your phone outright and buy a prepaid sim. Always.

  • Git this also, on a business Optus account.

Oddly enough, Optus is commited to Businesses as well as Australians connected. "At Optus, we're committed to keeping Australian businesses connected"

At least they increased the quota 10GB.

    • The vast majority of Optus support staff is subcontracted out to third parties overseas and are script moneys.

Got this email as well. The bigger issue for me is that I'm on 36 month contract. And they have decided to increase this in the midst of the contract - can they actually do this ?

    • +1

Read the contract you signed. Yes they can and you agreed to it.

They might offer you option to cancel without a cancellation fee but you will have to pay all outstanding fees.

36 month contracts are ridiculous, should never do that.

      • Yeah, agreed, only after a couple of months I realized that 36 months was too long. I did try to change to 24 months but they denied.

It's just so frustrating with these increases even though on a contract.

Message them through the app, say you're not happy and go through the motions (long wait time, digital assistant, long wait time, expert, long wait time, retention) and finally retention should offer you a bill credit for the remainder of your contract. I ended up getting $20 per month for 12 months bill credit following my complaint about the price increase mid contract
