Irwin Locking Groove All Purpose Jaw Pliers shit all over these /)

    • +1

Do you have any proof to back this up?
I like watching ProjectFarm on YouTube - very good testing, with some surprising results - most of the time the more expensive one is better.

      • +1

Yep I own both sets and always grab the Irwin’s over these.
Before all the noobs jump in and say I must be a crap tradie.
If you don’t know how to use tools correctly then go for it and buy the most expensive tools you can find.
If you use them everyday hundreds of times a day you find what works best for your situation and for me Irwin’s shit on these for everyday use

      • 1d1ocracy has some reviews of niche tools, here's knipex pliers wrench vs Irwin's copy of the same https://youtu.be/xS6WttDIQmc

        • Good for him

Yeah nah. I've put mine through so much abuse for over 10 years and they haven't malformed or had much damage to them. And the pliers wrench is amazing because it won't damage whatever you're working on because of the smooth edge on them. Irwin are just cheap and bulky.

    • Umm… no way I'd pick hand tools made in China over made in Germany.

The metal used is different, the manufacturing quality is different, the durability of the tool itself is different.
The gripping teeth on the pliers will stay in shape and sharper for a lot longer as well.

If I had a plumber mate who came and helped me change a vanity the other week and I saw his pliers were old and rusty, would this be a good way to say thanks and buy them as a gift?

    • +5

      Yep defiantly

      • +13

I would give them willingly, don't worry!

        • +3

          Haha wtf

hahahaha…. definitely defiantly, or defiantly definitely?:)

Yeah knipex is a great brand in all trades and one can never have enough tools. Pliers wrench is awesome for not damaging fixings aswell.

    • +2

100% yes. Any decent tradie will know the Knipex brand (and it's likely cost).
This would be an awesome gift.

  • Why are these so expensive? For a noob who doesn't know much, but uses odd tools here and there on apartment probably once in 1 year….any cheap alternatives?

      • Watched the first few mins - the test seems stupid. There is no consistency in terms of force applied to the bolt. Pliers with say additional half cm hand grip width will get a heap more force on the bolt from those clamps.

If you're using them that infrequently probably just whatever adjustable water pump pliers are cheapest to replace the cobra, and a cheap set of ring/open end spanners as a substitute for the pliers wrench.

I've seen the 250mm cobra on sale at amazon UK for $35, IMO a bargain for that price.

Cobra is great because it's got a one-handed quick adjust button, and very hard and sharp jaws to grip into whatever you're trying to hold/turn. I've used mine to remove rusted bolts I thought I'd have to grind off.

The pliers wrench the jaws stay parallel, so it's basically an adjustable spanner that can do anything from 0-50mm for the 250mm long model, again with one-handed quick adjust. At the same time while you're turning/gripping the handles you've got a massive lever force that you can use to clamp down on the thing you're holding. That means you're basically never going to slip and round off nuts. I've used mine as a handheld press, and to bend sheet metal precisely.
