MacBook Air Vs MacBook Pro

Hi all,

Looking to buy a new Macbook, I have a base model M1 Macbook Air which I'm giving to my mother as I am using a lot of RAM and storage and think I need more. It does do all of the below pretty well at the moment which I have been impressed with.

I am deciding between the M1 Air 16GB / 512GB (~$1000), M2 Air 16GB / 512GB (~$1250) and binned 14 inch Pro 16 GB / 512GB (~$1500). These are salary sacrificed prices saving on GST and tax as well as student prices.

Any other configurations I should consider? I'm not in a hurry for it, so happy to wait for a custom configuration. I am leaning towards the M1 Macbook Air as I don't love the notch, but I think I might get use to it.

Use: Streaming videos, web browsing (lots of tabs and windows), figma, vs code, the sims, word processing, excel, remote desktop, teams, messaging apps…

Thanks

salary sacrificing anyway, get all the upgrades :+1:

teams uses a ridiculous amount of ram

    • so which upgrades? lol I can't go much further with the Air..

      • if it's going to be your work device, you'd probably want more ram. i've currently got docker casually using 13gb, 2.5gb on teams (not on any calls). vscode is basically 500mb/tab, figma is 1.5gb/tab.

nothing wrong with the air you have there, it's a great device. i'm just a bit scarred from teams constantly crashing on calls when i was using the 8gb air and literally nothing else was running; also frequently swapping to the ssd.

the notch isn't so bad for me, rarely use that area of the screen anyway

        • hmm okay I guess I could consider the pro with just the ram upgrade. I'll have a think. I cringe at the upgrade prices haha

    • teams uses a ridiculous amount of ram

      so don't use teams

My vote is for the M1

    • +1. M2 in my opinion is more like M1.5, not quite the 'M2' I was hoping for. But then again the new M2 MBA does look very good (if you're going for the looks). Personally I'd be getting the M1 MBA with 16GB/512GB instead. M2 MBA is great but the M2 CPU produces more heat and since MBA doesn't have a fan I'd say the performance gain is probably minimal unless you do video editing (then you would go for MBP 14.2" anyway?).

So you made a post to brag about bullshit prices you've pulled out of your ass… Congratulations.

Get M2 air if using it as a portable. Get Pro 14" (10core) if you are planning to use it mostly at a desk or need multiple screens.

Congrats on not being able to read.

That wasn't my intention, I was just sharing prices to compare.. I don't really dock to a screen, sometimes I do, so good point and something to think about.

        • Ahh Nah I wasn't just sharing a post. I was sharing your last post that had you asking how to spend 6k.
Now you're being a flop to OP about spending 1k.
Thought you'd see the irony is all

@timthetoolman: No my issue is his quoting prices that are half of RRP for each these machines. Sure it’s possible but the comparison doesn’t change if he just used RRP and said his going to claim a deduction. Saying your going to get a $3000 MacBook Pro for $1500 is just trash talking…

@stirlo: If you must know how I worked it out, I earn 125K + super and study at university part time which is related to my job. Student price through my university is $2,658.70. Minus GST is $2,417. Minus 37% tax is $1522.12. Please correct me if I am wrong in my calculations.

              • @macbookbuyer: Not saying you're wrong just its arrogant to post that in there.

      • Thanks, this is a good idea and not something I thought about. I'll do some more research.

would not buy the new macbooks, if they can let slip such a design flaw in such an expensive piece of equipment.

he's bitter, but he isn't wrong about apple.

    • I feel like the overlap of Louis Rossman viewers and Apple purchasers probably isn't that high.

      • probably not, although i bought an iphone and i watch him.

just something to be aware of, i didn't realise macbooks were built so shoddily, i thought they were at least decent laptops, even if they were way too overpriced, until i saw that video

    • Rossman is good but Isn't that video irrelevant? it's about SSD failure on the Intel MacBook Pro 16", Late 2019 (Model A2141).

Apple silicon laptops have a completely different architecture and logic board design compared to previous Intel Macs.

Hey mate, did you end up deciding?

  • What about the touchpad on the m2 pro? Do these things break easily? If i'm purchasing I'd want a pro to last me 10years like my air did
