The theft is removing the weight thereby lowering the amount paid.

To avoid this, buy Broccolini or frozen Broccoli.

    • +3

My kids absolutely love the stalk (raw with the hull removed) - would be a loss to not have it, it's literally the best part.

      • +2

One of my kids will only eat the stalk. I don't understand why you wouldn't just chop it up and cook it anyway. People are just dumb.

  • +2

If you break a product in-store before you buy it, you are liable for the damage unless the store contributed to the damage in some way.

You should really give one of those big no-win, no-fee law firms a call.

  • +4

The broccoli stem is the only tasty part of the broccoli.

    • +2

      Hard disagree.

  • +11

the shop has paid for the stems, so should the customers.

It's not theft as nothing has been taken. Possibly wilful damage.

Brocolli stems are nice thinly sliced and either baked or sautéed. People are so wasteful of good food

    Where's the line though?
What if I start scooping out the centre of watermelon (sweetest part) and only pay for those per kg?
Or peel bananas before paying for them?
People abuse this enough and stores will just start pre-packing broccoli in plastics, people then complain about the environment ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • +1

    What have you done OP?

  • +2

Half the population eat the stem, the other's don't. Neither can comprehend the actions of the other.

  • -1

Naturally it is theft, you'd have to be shameless to have another viewpoint.

  • Probably not theft but criminal damage.

  • +3

Thoughts on the sign? They need a comma between thanks and management.

  • It would be theft if no one buys the stem that had been broken off and left behind. Imagine if a full broccoli weights 1kg and the stem weights 250g of that kg. The shop would only be paid for the 750g and thus 250g worth is “stolen” by the offender.

  • +3

Would you consider it acceptable to peel bananas before you go the checkout and leave the skins on the shelf?

    • Or take all the rind off the watermelon or de-core all the apples

Is this somehow related with swapping the eggs from one carton to another ?

  • I don’t mind the broccoli stem but buying frozen at the moment. My kiddo is going through a broc phase so easier just having it on hand in the freezer all the time.

Definitely shouldn’t break them - no one is buying the stem without the head so it’s just waste for the store. If you don’t like the amount of stem don’t buy it.

The act nothing new. There was a fruit store that my grandmother used to go too.
    Which had a sign saying:
    Whole broccoli $4.99 per Kg.
    broccoli florets $16.99 per Kg.
As people would go in and break the unwanted stem/stork off and then go here is my 200g of broccoli when it should have been 600g. So either way you paid for it.

Could stores do it now days? As long as they had a clear sign displaying the price that would cover the store?

    • I used to frequent a fruit shop that did the same thing. I didn’t know removing a stem was a thing until I saw the sign.

  • Is it any different to removing the stems/vines off the truss tomatoes or the extra layer of skin off loose onions? What about the leaves that get shipped with cauliflower, you better believe that stuffs coming off.
They’re already selling the broccoli wet to increase the weight, I’m not paying for 15cm of stem.

    • "I’m not paying for 15cm of stem"

The broccoli is sold with a stem so you either buy it with a stem or don't buy it at all.

      • so the cauliflower leaves you are happy to pay for 200g you are going to throw away? the vine tomato varieties where 50-100g is added to the weight, and charging $8-10/Kg?
The broccoli stem would be better served being turned back into the soil rather than shipped all around the country for 50% of people to just throw away.

        • It doesn't really matter, the point is currently broccoli is sold with a stem so you either buy it or don't.
There's many things in life I may or may not agree with but in the end you just have to live with it.
It's impossible to satisfy 100% of people.
Personally I happen to like the stem anyway, as it's very delicious sliced up and sauteed with the broccoli.

        • I don’t think I’ve ever seen a whole cauliflower sold by the weight…

The problem with removing the vines on truss tomatoes is that people then try to pass them off as cheaper tomatoes.

        • than shipped all around the country for 50% of people to just throw away.

I'm coming to terms with the fact that 50% of people could be this silly.

  • Easy fix
cut off excess stalk and sell stalk separately
increase the price of the new stalk-less broccoli
while also selling the standard long stalk broccoli
    everybody is happy

    • +1

people doing self checkout will pick the cheaper price even if they have stalk-less

  • If I had to choose between the stalk or the florets (yes it's a real word because Google told me so) then I'd eat the stalk. The stalk is so delicious. The people taking the florets are living in la la land. Doubt that it'd be theft since they're not pinching anything. But likely it'll be destroying property. It's like opening the pizza box and taking the toppings and leaving the base. It devalues the product and the store makes a loss because it can't sell the damaged product.

I've done this myself occasionally in the past, most often when the broccoli pieces were 70% stem. Most people buy broccoli for the florets, so this is a bit annoying… I do however use the stem in cooking myself. Most people would think that fresh produce self serve means they get to pick what they want and leave what they don't, hence the practice. Nobody does it if the stems are a reasonable length, I think this is the problem, especially when prices are $12/kilo.

    • Not true, plenty of pensioners do it whatever the length.

      • Do they still lift?

  • I remember seeing a similar sign over 25 years ago in a greengrocer. My mother once saw a little old lady rubbing the skins of onions…

  • +1

TIL I need to stop throwing away the stem and cook and eat it instead

  • The stalk is super tasty. Just slice it finely and throw it in with the florets. Not sure why you'd not use it.

  • What store is this? Name them.

Seriously if the store is losing money they should be increasing prices. I see people squashing oranges, apples, kiwi fruit and more everyday either intentionally or unintentionally. People are people, you can't mandate against behaviour.

Fail on behalf of the store. Personally every green grocer just picks it up and bins them. It's sad, but that's the way you do business. If you are in the fruit and veg business, a few grams isn't going to save you when you are losing multiple kilograms worth of apples daily anyway.

So, my answer is that this is an overzealous store that hasn't been in the green grocer business long enough.

If they wanted, they could just wrap it in cling wrap and chuck it in the discount bin. I'd buy it because I love the stem. My guess is that they don't even have one of those. If so, they should go jump off a bridge, before they get on their high horse.
