  • Is it short throw? If put one meter from the screen how big could the projection get?

  • How decent is this? Price seems reasonable but every post like this, people point out crucial flaws I haven't considered, and then link to $3,000+ ones - I think i'm in the market for a projector but only if comparable to a reasonably-priced TV, and don't know if that's realistic.

Straight off the bat, it's only 1080p.
Just by that alone it would turn me off buying it.

I bought a 1080p projector from bigw for around $150, just doesn't have google TV built in.

Stick a usb in with whatever you want to watch and save $500

        • What's the quality like with the lights off? Good as a cheap TV?

All I watch are 1080p downloads.

@DASHCAM NOW DUDE: 720p rips are bit how's it goin (cos of the size of the projection) but 1080p obviously better/fine. Great with lights off in a dark room and still watchable otherwise.

If you want TV quality pay much more and lug around a TV when you need to move. If you're not huge on TV consumption, wanna chill and watch a movie in bed every now n then it's great.

          For $150 there's a good chance it's a 1080p compatible projector with a much lower native resolution.

Could be wrong and would be happy to be but it seems a little cheap for native FHD

The only reason to get a projector is the sheer size. You can get an 85" 4k hisense that would outperform any projector in that price range.

At minimum I would go with BenQ TK810, being a traditional projector it has typical downsides Eg. Dark room. $2k if you catch it on sale.

If you want a TV alternative you'd be looking at UST laser projector and an ALR screen to go with it, this would cost 3k or more.

    • I don't have this, but have the Pro model (Xiaomi Smart Projector Pro 2), and I have to say for the price I am very well impressed.
I only project on walls so far, it's a very nice all in one device. It's bright enough to use during day with blinds down and a bit of light creep in. At night it really shines well (pun intended).

I like that the fan is very quiet, I like that picture quality is very sharp and it's easy to setup and gives us a HUGE screen. We've taken it to a few friends house and they've all been impressed.
What I wish was better is that it doesn't have a mounting point in the middle but 4 screws on the sides which limits tripod choices. It also doesn't have any built in leg to adjust a bit of height.
Lastly the contrast could be a bit better but it's very usable. It's mostly darker scenes that suffer and I've been told using a proper screen instead of a wall will help with that.
Oh and I forgot, the international models with Android TV doesn't have 3D, which is a shame as a screen this big would be so nice for 3D consumption. This seems to be purely a software limitation as Chinese models have 3D functionality. The next closest thing is the Xgimi Horizon (none pro) which has similar specs and android TV built in, + 3D. The advertised brightness for xGimi is not true (claim is 2200lm reality based on review is 1200-1600lm). As such I couldn't justify the Xgimi for $1300 vs Xiaomi Pro 2 for $850 (bought on eBay plus 20% sale).

If xgimi can prove to be brighter on new models or disprove the claim of reviewers then it'll be the better choice for sure as it has 3D, newer android tv, better speakers and brighter.

EDIT: Oh and adding one more thing here, I'm one of those who has never used the smarts on my TV and specifically looked for a TV that just had good image quality and boot up fast so I can use my own media player with it (I have console, PC and Google TV with Chromecast attached to it), and that makes sense for a TV. But for a projector that we want to hog around the house and to other people houses, having everything built in is a massive postive. Reading through the comments on this post many people don't understand the appeal of this product and confuse it with fixed projectors.

I had the Xiaomi Youth Projector Gen 1. Sold it off after 1yr as the lens keeps going out of focus as it heats up. it was a design issue as the plastic components inside start to overheat and the parts holding the lens move. I ended up purchasing a refurbished Epson TW-7100 (faux 4K) from the Epson website. Hasn't missed a beat since.
Anotehr thing is 500 ANSI lumens isn't very bright (at 90in) and the room must be almost dark to view. Not suitable for rooms with bright windows or light refraction from the floors etc.

How does this go with projecting onto the ceiling? So if you are laying on a queen-sized bed, and you place this projector on the bedside table and face it towards the ceiling (projecting to on the ceiling which is center to the bed, so you can lay down and look straight up).
Does it work well in this case?
