Oculus/Meta No Longer Requires a Facebook Account

Got this email this morning - perhaps useful to know for those considering a VR headset but put off by the need to have a FB acct;

"A Facebook account is no longer required to use Meta VR devices. Instead, you’ll need to set up a Meta account, which lets you log into your VR devices and view and manage your purchased apps in one place. You can set up a Meta account using your email address or Facebook account, and as part of the process we’ll migrate your existing VR information (including apps, achievements, and friends) to this account."

“Instead, you’ll need to set a Meta account”…

Yeah, so you still need a FB account, just it’s rebadged as “Meta”.

And irrespective of if you setup a separate account with a separate email, they'll still associate your accounts and track you on the backend.

  • Same same

"You no longer need a Facebook account"
"You just need an account for a service whose data we also manage"

    Welcome to the Metaverse

I understand everyone's concern that "it's still a Facebook account with a different name". But the key is that it's not attached to your personal Facebook profile. It's not perfect by any means but it's better.

Is that what they told you? :)

Disappointed you didn't find a way to link this to the MSM

Tell us more about how you never share your email address with anybody

    • but meta = facebook
so meaning meta account is facebook account (but just different name)

      • We heard you the first time

Can you tell the difference between linking a device to a Facebook account you've had forever that contains volumes of information about your habits and relationships and a brand new Meta account that only knows your email address

        • okay… i thought as facebook changes their name to meta, i assumed meta is just = facebook where we can post things (i assumed they will just change www.facebook.com to www.meta.com and everything else stays the same).

      • A meta account is now almost identical to a steam account, vive account, epic games account. You could put whatever info in there you like which is in no way linked to those baby photos you posted 4 years ago.

I've never had a Facebook account. Always used an Oculus account.

    Still works.

    • but to participate in the referral program i believe we need to login with facebook.
