Reliable Mattress or Mattress Toppers That Don't Break The Bank

Hi all

The wife has been mentioning about wanting to look for a new mattress of late so that means one thing, consulting the OzB Oracles in order to ensure I don't spend over the top on something that is totally over inflated or actually doesn't perform as hoped.

Our current mattress is a queen latex type and in reality there is nothing wrong with it other than waking in the morning with some shoulder, hips discomfort as it is very firm. We have an Ikea mattress topper which isn't really cutting it anymore so I am leaning towards replacing the topper given the mattress is in great condition and given its a massive chunk of latex will probably outlast me.

Anyone got any good options for a decent topper that we could use to soften things up but still provide sufficient support for a good nights sleep? I saw this advertised the other day - https://supersleeperpro.com.au/collections/topper/products/o… which has a large number of positive reviews although I am always a bit skeptical of reviews on sites like these. I do like the 120 night guarantee option though.

Anyway, the community are the best people to advise so would appreciate any guidance based on real world experience.

Cheers

Even if it is firm, you should not be getting discomfort waking upon a mattress, how old is the mattress ? If its over its use by date replace it, they do not last forever.

If the mattress is sagging or not providing enough support, it doesn't matter what topper you get, its irrelevant.

    • That is good info. Our current mattress is pure latex with no springs so its along the lines of what is being recommended in the post you referenced.

I used to be a front sleeper but changed a while back to side sleeping. I do wonder if that has some part to play as now my shoulders and hips bare the load.

I just clicked on this because I was curious and it was my post haha

  • Its about 40cm high and essentially is a solid piece of latex rubber. This thing couldn't sag if it tried.

Best topper imho. It does come on sale occasionally (usually 10%)

    • Thanks. One of the first reviews I saw was that it made their seriously firm latex mattress a comfortable nights sleep.

      Similar use case.

  • trouble with toppers is they cost more than a queen budget mattress

My tempur recently packed it in and was giving me low back pain. Got this for $99 from Kmart when it was still in stock and honestly it’s pretty comfy, back pain gone. https://www.kmart.com.au/product/king-bed-euro-top-pocket-sp… I wasn’t sure if I was going to keep it but just wanted something with out spending a fortune but so far going to just keep it. It doesn’t have a luxury type feel or anything but I can sleep and wake up without pain so it’s good enough. Has minimal partner disturbance too. Still available in queen for $309 + delivery. https://www.kmart.com.au/product/queen-bed-euro-top-pocket-s…

@jollster101 we have had a 100% latex mattress now for near 20yrs. Paid near $2k for it back then but money very well spent. Likely silly question but have you tried flipping and reversing your mattress? Even if it has a 'pillowtop' sewn above the latex mattress, doing this is well worth while.

I agree that the 'reviews' on sleep products are often very dodgy. Everything I've read on toppers is that you're better off putting that money towards a new mattress. How old is your latex mattress? Very hard to get a proper 100% latex one now, seems a lot of fake latex out there - but the one linked above is indicative that they're quite pricey.

We have had it around 12 years I reckon which I know some may say means could be time to switch. Given that there are no springs and its essentially a solid piece of latex that doesn't sag then I'm not convinced on that (not an expert though).

The wife has said this weekend is bedding change so I will flip it. I have to admit its not been done for a while as the bloody thing is sooooooo heavy given its composition. The sheer weight and age leads me to think that we have an original 100% latex unit rather than cheaper variant as you mentioned. When we got it it wasn't cheap although that's not always an indicator of quality these days.

Yes, they are incredibly heavy and also very cumbersome - quite the effort to flip them but doing so makes a BIG difference. I don't think we did this for the first 15yrs or so but worth doing periodically. Yes, sounds like you have a quality latex mattress hopefully will serve you well for many years yet.

  • @Nikko - Do you flip yours completely so what you were sleeping on then ends up on the slats? Just wondered as the mattress we have only has the cushioning on the one side of the mattress.

Or do you just rotate the mattress through 180 degrees from foot to head?

@jollster101 , as mentioned in OP we do both. Flip mattress over and also 'head to toe' - as ours like yours has the pillow top extra padding on one side only but we find it makes little difference when 'flipped' and using without it. See how you go - you might need to add a basic topper on when it's 'flipped' but that will give you 4 total possible positions for your mattress - which should mitigate any wear on it considerably. :-)
