Buy an e-Bike or Convert Existing?

Hi ozb village,

I am looking to either buy an e-bike outright or convert our Flight Hybrid to an e-bike.
Do you think the Flight Hybrid is worth converting (i.e. any foreseeable issues)?
I am not experienced enough in bikes to be confident in my decision.

Use: Work commute 8 km distance with minor inclines and busy roads.

The overview I got from digging the forum was:
1) Budget at least $3,000 for an e-bike
2) Converting is cheaper at around $1,000

Anything else I should know about e-bikes or converting one?

Bonus question: any recommendations for transporting a 1 year old on a bike?

Buy a ready to go e-bike from NCM. No fussing around with existing, no hackjob parts and cables everywhere.

    • Any particular model you'd recommend?

NCM Aspen personally since I enjoy off-road mountain biking and fat tyres help but the Moscow is probably the go-to one or Milano if you want a more urban one.

try a Cullen ebike, under $2000 delivered.
I got a version 4 with 2000 watt motor , hydraulic brakes, works fine, and Im about 120kg
just mount a kids seat either behind or in front of you, they usually love it

    • Thanks sharkyoz. I'll include Cullen in my shortlist.

  • Buy an ebike if you don't want to mess around with things - 8k isn't far for a simple 25km/h ebike

Converting isn't too bad but lots of things to take into consideration.

    • Thanks SnowDragon. From the post that Chickenleg tagged, it seems like there's quite a bit involved in converting.

  • Have you considered a motorbike?

    • Not really as I don't have a motorbike licence.

  • I did my own conversion but if your knowledge is limited and you're only riding 8 kms, i'd also recommend to just buy one.

    • That's an awesome thread, Chickenleg! I'd likely pay to convert, but I am now inclined towards buying one.

  • is conversion safe enough not to stall in the middle of the road!

flat 8km is nothing, just use a normal push bike. your body will thank you

    • Totally! However we might be relocating further from work; hence considering our options.
