How likely are Jetstar to cancel flights?

I'm planning a family trip to Singapore for Christmas this year and I'm feeling a bit nervous organising overseas trip in general whilst in the long tail of covid. It is also high season so airports will be hectic.

I will no doubt be purchasing travel insurance but I just have fear of flights being cancelled which will ruin our holiday plans. We will have 3 weeks of accommodation prebooked and possibly Sing-Saigon return flights all booked in advance. I heard some people only received credit as compensation and not actually being transferred to another flight.

I'm tossing between Jetstar and Singapore Airlines - there is more than 2K of fare difference. I'm just wondering how likely are Jetstar to cancel flights? Is it worth going with Singapore Airlines for security? I'm assuming they will be more reliable though I could be wrong.

If anyone has experienced cancellation with either airlines recently please let me know.

Allow me to check my crystal ball….

I don't like the thought of these last minute cancellations so I would not book a budget airline. Booking a non-budget airline doesn't guarantee that the flight won't get cancelled, but I'm happy to pay to try and minimise those chances.

If you're flexible with your dates, the difference will probably be smaller.

True I think I might fork in for the extra 2k as this is a 5 year overdue family reunion

      Better not fly Qantas then!

I've flown Jetstar to Singapore what must be over a hundred times now and I've only ever had 1 cancellation. There's been a few delays of a few hours, but when you're in Changi, it's easy to spend those hours enjoying the airport. The one cancellation we had, I ended up just staying another night in our hotel and claimed it on travel insurance. We were on a flight the next day.

I've also flown Scoot many times and never had a cancellation or delay with them.

There are so many flights between Australia and Singapore that delays and cancellations aren't numerous and when there are, it's relatively short.

What during this almost-post-covid period? The frequency of cancellations seem to have been a lot higher right now.

        • What during this almost-post-covid period?

I have flown to Singapore 5 times since March without any issues. 4 with JQ, once with Scoot. Every flight has been on time so far.

Canceling flights isnt even the worse bit as you have a good chance of getting your money back and claiming on travel insurance. Its when they shuffle it a few days, change direct to stopover, etc that is most annoying!! 😡

And you get the option of a flight 6 hours earlier, which doesn't line up with your other travel arrangements, or one two days later that requires you to take extra leave, pay for hotels and end up on a 5am plane.

I still risk it for the savings, of course!

Lolll I knew something wasn't right silly me

    • So, mid flight, flight crew had to open the cabin doors and ask everyone to step outside…. :)

I mean yes Singapore airlines is much better and more reliable, but probably not worth the $2K extra.
Have you considered Scoot? Owned by Singapore Airlines and is more budget friendly, plus there are tons of sales going on

    • I've never flown with Scoot are the seats more like Jetstar or more like Air Asia? From memory Air Asia's seats are cramped.

its a discount airline… dont expect 4ft of leg room

        • +1

Of course not, but IMO jetstar is actually comfortable to fly with considering they're budget option.

@rubyreds: For Australia to Singapore both Jetstar and Scoot use 787 Dreamliners so are quite new (or at least they did the last time I flew them on routes from Melbourne)

Scoot are excellent. 10x better than Jetstar.

  • Grain of salt…

But friends were meant to be going to Gold Coast last week. Day of the flight they received an sms from Jetstar that their flight was cancelled, and their next available flight was 3 days away. They were only going for a week, so cancelled their flight.

    • We had similar the week before, but 4 days notice. Managed to get a later flight on the same day. Got lucky!

Last 2 times flying jetstar have had a flight cancelled. Flying MEL-SYD was cancelled with 3 hours notice but jumped onto live chat and caught an earlier flight.
SYD-AKL cancelled with 2 months notice and automatically moved onto an earlier flight.

I'd say 1/4 of my flights with Jetstar have been either delayed or cancelled in the last 12 months

  • I don't care.

I always get FareCredit and book refundable accommodation.

so far jetstar have cancelled the following flights for me

    march 2020 - Korea
    march 2022 - Bali
    june 2022 - Japan
    7 July 2022 - melb—>bris (3 hours notice)

    Just fly scoot

    Is this a trick question?

Lol I haven't travelled by plane post pandemic and just wanted to get an idea or opinion from those who have.

  • Just go for SIA. Not compatible with JS.

  • This is only for domestic flights but the official cancellation rates for May 2022 is Jetstar 5.7%, Qantas 7.1%, Rex 1.4%, Virgin 5.0%.

Based on this data, higher fares does not always equal higher reliability.

A guy I work with was delayed for an entire day at Brisbane airport trying to get back to Vic. He rocked up at 7am to find his flight cancelled. They kept telling him he would be on the next flight. Then the next came along and they said not this one, the next one. Then it was the next one. Eventually he got home at like 12am.

They did compensate him $20 for food. Wow.

  • I found they were pretty good at putting me on a close flight when they cancelled me last week. My flight moved an hour so I probably wouldn't spend 2k to maybe save an hour.

They did give me a few days notice though, so I wasn't left waiting at the airport.

  • I've been on hundreds of flights, dozens of Jetstar flights, and never once has one been cancelled. The chances are very slim in my experience.

  • +1

Today my flight was rescheduled 2 days later or go halfway and pay my own hotel…

Jetstar is the worst airline in my opinion always have been. If there was another cheap option I would have taken it but was $400 international flight vs $1100

I took the risk, I got fudged over hopefully the rebooking makes it…

I have no faith in Jetstar, but I take the gamble with the excessively cheap flights sometimes it doesn't work out that's the risk you take

  • +2

Try scoot or maybe air asia.

  • Recent experience…

Flying to Gold Coast, on the way to airport receive sms from Jetstar stating that flight has been cancelled. We were re-scheduled to a new flight the next morning.

Next morning… got to the airport (at 6am) and received a new sms stating that flight had been cancelled (again!). They offered me the next available flight which was at 10pm!!!

We went straight to Virgin terminal and booked one way tickets then and there for 8:10am! Thankfully Jetstar refunded our flights,
