  • I just checked my old order on Amazon. Was $179.90 in Dec’18

The Smart Button was released in Oct 2019, so… can I please borrow your time machine?

      • I see. Didn’t realise this kit has a smart button as well.

        • Yeah I assumed as much ;-) It's not a bad buy, but considering our older Hue prices, I honestly couldn't justify a ~$70 price increase just for smart button.

      • I'd lend you my time machine, but it broke down next week.

  • This is a good kit, very basic and robust smart system. The lights are about average brightness though. If you're used to the very bright LIFX bulbs for example then you'll find these aren't as bright. Also they don't dim as much as LIFX, which can dim all the way down to barely visible.

I think I paid around $50-$60 for all this (minus the button) via Kogan recently.

Yes same, bought a few starter kits for around $70 or less which didn't have the button. No great loss the 4 button dimmer switch is better then the button anyway and can be bought cheap.

      • I did the same and got the dimmer switch… It's still in the box, just use google assistant.

        • Sitting on the couch with the dimmer switch in arms reach is leagues ahead of Google Assistant. You're missing out.

          • @KangaDrew: Hey Google, bring me a beer…

            • @jv: Sorry, sometimes I get it wrong. Sending feedback helps.

The Hue dimmer switch is excellent, you can program it to perform dozens of actions. Often it's easier to hit the button. Plus they work when internet is down, voice assistants don't.

          • @LowRange:

you can program it to perform dozens of actions.

I read you can program up to 5 scenes.

@jv: With third party Hue apps like Hue Essentials you can set each button to do different things and control different lights with single tap, double tap, triple tap and so on up to it think 5 taps (maybe more) as well as tap and hold. So this gives it 24 individual actions. https://i.imgur.com/0iu7xLR.jpg

I had no idea there are 3rd party apps…

Any pointers on where to find out more info?

                • +1

@jv: Yes there's heaps, the best way is jump on your app store of choice and search Philips Hue because some are Android only and some Apple only. Or there's a number of sites which list their favourites https://apppearl.com/philips-hue-apps/

I used Hue Essentials to setup all the dimmer switches, once everything is setup i dont need to use the third party apps much for day to day things. There's so much the Hue system can do that Hue dont have in their default app.

                  • @LowRange: I ordered another couple of switches with the sale today, together with some more hue downlights which aren't arriving till August, so will look into it further then… thanks.

                • @jv: If you have an iPhone give iConnectHue a look.

One of the better apps out there.
