ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Trinity OC 12GB Video Card - $1577 + Delivery ($16 SYD Next Day) @ Skycomp.com.au

150

Just wanted to share, this is the lowest price for a 3080 Ti I've seen listed anywhere (below MSRP). It's also a decent brand/SKU, unlike the awful inno3D X4 variant floating around.

I was skeptical of Skycomp.com.au as I hadn't used them before, but they delivered it the next day itself (I'm in Sydney). Full context, I was hunting around for a 12GB 3080, which were priced around 1400 - so this was just slightly more. After waiting 5 years to upgrade my GPU, I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Sorry a bit out of context question but can this be used as an eGPU with Surface Laptop Studio (it has Thunderbolt 4 port)?. I have the one with following config:

    • Quad-core 11th Gen Intel® Core™ H35 i7-11370H Processor
    • Intel® Core™ i7 models: NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3050 Ti laptop GPU with 4GB GDDR6 GPU memory

Also, I want to display it out on a Thunderbolt only monitor.

    Thanks in advance.

You'd need an eGPU enclosure mate, like this one listed here: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/graphics-cards/accessori…

Those normally can work with any regular form factor NV/AMD GPU.

      • Thanks. Yes aware of the eGPU enclosure. More interested in knowing that given my config, do you reckon that it will work well with this GPU (in enclosure)?

Generally it'll work "OK". It's not a good experience, or a bad one. You also have to be a little bit techy to handle it.

          Some notes on an egpu:
          - any usb/Ethernet ports can be a bit hit and miss how they work, even on the razer
          - you need to loosen bitlocker on windows to avoid the changing hardware (the GPU) from stopping it booting
          - you need a little script to disable the laptop gpu when you swap to the egpu to force windows to push anything running on the laptop gpu over to the egpu (it works without, but the apps lag a bit as the frame has to go via the egpu to the monitor)
          - an egpu isn't "disconnect and go" you have to essentially turn off your laptop to avoid breaking apps were in the egpus vram.
          - you'll lose 5-15% perf off the GPU compared to it being installed in a desktop.

I used an egpu for about 18 mo, and while I did find it cool, I have gone back to a desktop+laptop configuration.

          • @incipient: Thanks mate. That's useful info.

I looked at I/O for the graphics card. Seems it is HDMI only. Are there any GPUs which support thunderbolt out as well? I have 2 monitors - unfortunately both are just thunderbolt. When I purchased them, I was not aware that there is no such thing as "HDMI to Thunderbolt"

Also, I want to display it out on a Thunderbolt only monitor.

            • @thegreatermamba:

              thunderbolt out from a gpu

I haven't seen anything, a guess would be no, because it would have to pass usb through the GPU, which isn't standard. It would be kinda cool however. In the case of an egpu however, the thunderbolt from your laptop to the epgu would just be too limiting to have another full thunderbolt connection out the back. Even just a single gpu is a bit limited by thunderbolt.

Huh you have also stumped me on this one. I am not sure if a "usb-c to displayport" adapter works on the sink side of the connection. If it's full thunderbolt, it should?

The GPU should have displayport out, pretty much anything in the last 10 years should! Thunderbolt/usb3 supports "displayport over USB" so I think it should be simple enough for an adapter to handle it on the monitor…

It's a bit of a weird setup I just haven't encountered before haha. I'd definitely search more or pop into your local computer store.

I am a bit surprised there are monitors that are ONLY thunderbolt however! Damn that's limiting haha

      • inno3D is awful? its one of the best cooling fans around, esp the X4 model, and they use good quality thermal paste/pads.

        • That is just based on what I've read/reviews seen while I was conducting my research - the cooler on the X4 is over built for sure, but it still performs notably worse (higher core temp and hotspotting) than other variants.

It's also very limited by power output (stuck to 250W) and a really basic VRM, which means you have very little OC potential. Check out this review (https://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/dominic-moa…) and also this video: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaKXqQ5R7gY&ab_channel=O%21T…).

If you just wanted (any) 3080 Ti, the inno3D is fine though - but given how much these GPUs cost, it's worth knowing what you're getting before you buy.

    • How do you find the surface studio? I’m tossing up getting one but the SKUs and pricing suck.

regardless of dlss, 6900xt is definitely a better choice with 1099 price

    • Must say, very hard to disagree with your comment :) I considered getting that, but RT and DLSS won me over in the end.

      • Do you use it much? From what I've gathered it's only really useful to get to 4k from an already-high resolution, and according to Steam hardware stats there's not even a noticeable percentage of players with monitors running that kind of resolution: https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Softw…

It's made me think that I really don't need to worry about DLSS and it's a bit over-emphasized.

        • +1

One of my primary reasons to get a new GPU was to have something powerful enough to drive my 48" LG C1 panel - it's a native 4K display, so every little bit helps.

So far have tested RDR2, Far Cry 6 and Doom Eternal on 4K max settings, they ran just as great as you'd imagine them to. Heck, even Kingdom Come: Deliverance (a game notorious for breaking PCs) ran at near 60fps on 4K with everything turned on.

You buy what you need. If RT and DLSS is a must, then there is no point to choose AMD no matter how cheaper they are. It's like you tell someone to buy a cheap android instead of Iphone, if they need iOS then they wouldn't bother no matter the price.

Bragging rights would have been a better excuse :)

      • Didn't really understand until you likened Apple to Ngreedia.

    • Mostly, depends on what you use a gpu for

  • +4

Not great value with 3080 generally going for around $1000. I would not pay 50% more just for Ti.

You get extra 2GB ram, and extra mem bandwith.

  • 'member the time these used to sell out within seconds and were scalped? Yeah I 'member

    • many here are scalpers themselves
