What Jobs Pay $300K a Year?

Inflation has hit, $200K is no longer rich. I'm interested in hearing about people who earn more than $300K/year.

What was your journey? How did you get there?

  • almost any job above $150k will require heaps of OT, no chance of the "9-5" lifestyle if you want that type of money

    • "almost any job" - not true IMO, 150k isn't very high in the software development sector for example, and those are usually 9-5 with a good part of it spent browsing. Or jobs like dentist, doctors etc, many that I know only work 3-4 days a week

        hence the keyword "almost"

        thanks for the neg :)

        • Restored the balance. I think people under estimate the amount of people on $150k and above. It is like top 15% of all people in the work force.

To earn over $300k gross per annum. You’re in the top 0.1% of income earners. Another delusion “temporarily embarrassed millionaire” mindset that is creeping into Australia from America.

Adding my 2 cents here. I’ve got many good mates that have senior level (corporate GM level) IT/Finance jobs for years with salaries from $150k to $350k and I can say for sure, that the money earned at $150k is so much easier and less stressful then the bigger figure.

Picture 12 hour days plus working all weekend at nights when kids are sleeping to earn anything over $200k. The expectation above that level is insane, that your job effectively becomes your life and hobby

Is it worth it? Long term, yes as you can stay at the four seasons instead of the ibis hotel with your kids, but you’ll miss cricket practice and dancing classes all week

Me personally, $150k is a sweet spot where pay is good enough but you still have a life outside of work

    • money earned at $150k is so much easier and less stressful then the bigger figure

      This, plus this

$150k is a sweet spot where pay is good enough but you still have a life outside of work

It is where there is the most jobs and you're not at risk of getting flooded by grads or getting it off shored.

Most of the people on these boards are either not making that kind of money or just imagining how easy it is.

        Middle management in corporate

senior technical consultant/technical architect in systems, mid level experience and expertise. Not leading projects or meetings, just a cog in the chain

        In Big 4 terms
        Grad - $60-70k
        Consultant $80-100k
        Senior consultant $100-110k
Manager$110-130k **this is low stress, good pay, and even better pay when working in private market, not big 4, I mean boutiques
        Senior manage/associate director $130-170k
        Director- $200k+
        Partner $300k+

Same goes for boutique consulting companies and specialist systems firms but add 20% to all scales

        • how long does it take to be Senior Consultant in the big4?

Is it comparable to being a Senior Analyst in some companies?

      • Most senior level IT jobs

        Software Engineer jobs

        Project Managers

        etc

  • Selling sausages at Bunnings is the new path to riches.

If you are game, get a permit to grow medical marijuana. Highly regulated and expensive process but easy way to get rich

Running a good small business will easily get that. I grew up in that environment where work was everything and money was the reward. But there wasn’t much time for family shit. Like ever. On one hand your going to Louis Vuitton and designer shops, buying cool shit all the time, but for what.. if you can never just go to the movies or hang at home and do a movie night.

I have 2 little kids and I’m happy earning half that $300k but spending all the time with them. Everyone is different though. I respect people who never had it and now want it. Different strokes as they say.

I can relate. Was earning 200k plus for 2 years but no life. Literally work, eat, sleep. Now i work 3 to 4 hrs max a day , sometimes less (120k pa) and spend the rest of my time with my kids

      • Proper tax paid? Not easy if paying tax properly.

Many running small business makes decent, but also indirectly steals from the general population.

  • I don’t make 300k but my team mostly does, they are made up of bunch of senior cloud/DevOps/security architects and engineers.

  • I'm interested in hearing about people who earn more than $300K/year.

Everyone here has been saying I know this and that who earn that much. Almost no one here is on that much themselves. This question is better asked in whirlpool, not on ozbargain.

Or maybe they don’t want to come across as bragging?

People on 300K+ would likely be a senior person already (experience, age) so its probable that they don’t feel the same need to get validation, promote visibility etc that a person earlier in their career may feel. Most YouTube videos around these topics tend to be younger folks - except a few that genuinely want to pay it forward for the next generation.

Money shouldn’t be the only driver, but if you’re looking for a career that pays well with decent WLB and love constantly learning, working with IT/Cloud sales will often pay $200k+ with 5-6 YoE without requiring a uni degree. Once you get to a Senior level, you’ll be on ~300k and after that as a Principal ~400k+

      • I also sense they probably don't want to become a target of some form… but agreed, WP is where I'd ask not here.

      • can IT/Cloud sales job work from home?

        • I have no experience selling clouds. All my previous jobs involved selling rain

        • i'd imagine it depends how good you are at selling and whether you can do that effectively in front of a camera… but pure speculation.

      • Or maybe they don’t want to come across as bragging?

Or maybe don't want to disclose it in public?

  • Those who already getting $200k must be knowing what they should do to get $300k, no??

Bricklayer in WA $2000 per day and the one I saw only works 3 day a week 50 weeks of the year. Not sure if these rates would last forever

Prostitution ring, drugs, people smuggling and dark web. Anything else is too hard, takes too much time, too much effort and it means you gotta be a nice guy to all other humans who really in the end are all trying to fuk you anyway. You're welcome.

Airline pilots can make that… eventually. You'd need to be a very senior captain on a widebody aircraft. Easier to do in the US than in Australia, where that could take decades.

Anything related to education - ex-James Ruse maths teacher, $90 for a 2.5 hours class with 30 kids in there. Cash only and he runs multiple classes of similar price and size throughout the weekend. I reckon he clears $15-20k between Friday and Sunday at a minimum and runs 40 weeks in a year.

Granted he's actually pretty passionate about the subject, unlike some of his peers who are in it purely for the money.

      A maths teacher clearing 800k a year…….righto

I read textbooks while peers played video games, got into medical school, did stupid hours and tolerated mistreatment as a junior doctor, got into specialty training, had to work in the country where there is no life outside work for a young person.. and now enjoy getting paid to watch soap operas (not being crass about people's problems/life stories, I do enjoy listening to others and observing human behaviour).

Would do it again. Your mileage may vary. Most well paid jobs are well paid for a reason - what are you willing to sacrifice?

    • How come you get paid to watch soaps?

      • Soap opera = people's problems, behaviour, life stories. That's more interesting than the medicine which I can mostly do on autopilot these days

I used to earn 180ish working as aged care manager for 150 beds facility. I can tell from previous experience that it was not worth it. I am working 9-5, at home and even on-call 24/7. I decided to move to 40 beds and now earning less but man!!! Working very flexible whenever, I can browse Ozbargain and watch Horse race at work, NO WORK AT HOME, I can attend my son's event at daycare anytime during the day, spend time with him at home (100%) and rarely receives work related phone call when away. Go on weekend holiday and travel without thinking about work. By the end of the day, it is how much time you have with your family. Happier life.
