What Jobs Pay $300K a Year?

Inflation has hit, $200K is no longer rich. I'm interested in hearing about people who earn more than $300K/year.

What was your journey? How did you get there?

The easy big bucks ….. Vice-Chancellor at any Uni

Yeah mate, (profanity) trivial, just become a vice chancellor, no biggie.

      • +5

You might want to get a pro to look over your resume. I get Vice Chancellor offers on LinkedIn all the time.

I know someone who earns over $250k working on rigs.

Do you want to go work on oil rigs in the middle of the ocean for months at a time?

    Yeah, didn't think so.

    • Agree. There are people willing to work on oil rigs but it's very tough.
      Maritime jobs pay good money.

      • +1

gigs are better. Tones and I does pretty well.

        • I prefer midnight oil tbh

@DemocracyManifest: Weird how all the rig workers are on big bucks but still insist on buying everything on Gumtree while on rotation

            • @bloom: I’m not surprised lmao, everything cash and away from child support

              • @DemocracyManifest: Ah no that's not how it works…

Only way you are going to hide from that is if you have your own business.

There's a job offering for the NSW Trade Commissioner to the US.
    Easy 500k "present"

    • Surprisingly was a temp zero hour unconditional agreement, unknown to the original recipient

    • +4

Good point that needed to be mentioned.
What has never really been explained is why NSW need a Commissioner based in NYC.
      What is this role?
Does VIC, SA, WA etc have US based commissioners?
If so, what do they do?

  • +3

I make $350k as an ambergris trader.

    • are the ambergis providers wasy to work with?

      • +2

Generally not. They are normally very eccentric types, and often want to do a part trade for rare artefacts.

        • that's a very interesting job, how did life lead you into this industry?

          • @raiseyoursteaks: I was on a journey in search of the elusive white whale, migaloo, when I came across a small amount of ambergris. From that moment on, I was hooked on the ambergris trading life.

            • +2

@brendanm: You could say you're an Ambergris "Flipper"

            • @brendanm: Where and how is it traded? A dedicated market/ website/ stores?

    • +2

      Precious hamburgers?

  • +5

Agree. I mean after tax, you have 120k, then after your BMW subscriptions, going on 20k holidays, private school kids 20k (10k for each kid), plus other costs, you'd be lucky to have 100 bucks in the bank!

    • -2

don't know where you do your taxes, but you certainly have more than 120k after tax.
      try about 180k

      • According to ato stumps tax calculator, tax on 200k is about 60k.

But honestly 20k difference is nothing.

        (Ps just in case, /s)

        • +1

          … But we're talking about 300k a year? Not 200k…

          • +2

@SmiTTy: I was 'agreeing' 200k is not enough.

I mean I also don't think an extra 100k will help.

            /s

            • +1

@mbck: Reread… missed the sarcasm the first time !!

            • +1

@mbck: Jeez, I nearly missed the /s here. Anyone who genuinely thinks 200k a year isn't more then enough to live on is insane imo!!

              • @Woody982: I guess if kids go to private schools in Sydney (or some in Melbourne), $35k-$40k/ year per kid will make $200k income (before tax) not enough for sure. I wonder how people manage to send their multiple kids to these schools.

    • +10

$10k for each kid? Are you sending your kids to public school?

    • -1

This is why the smart people on $300k, invest in a high-yield investment vehicle.

      …I'll show myself out.

    • Wait.. is $10k/ year for a Catholic school or a private school you mean? I thought private school was more like $35k-$40k/ year.

  • Someone I know netted $1.26M in FY2022 - country sales manager.

    • +34

How many countries did he sell for that commission?

    • Camberwell? Toorak? Armadale?

      • +4

Hope you're not referring to Armadale in WA…..lol

        • +1

Could get more on day rates. Circa $1000 per day
PMO and have PMP plus agile skills $1400 per day.

Perm currently significantly less but suits me as need flexibity

If you can save orgs money with automation in processes there is work.

Work remote for a USA company and have a shit Aussie dollar to get 1.5x the usd salary.

    • You do this? Probably get taxed twice lol

      • +5

Yes as flat rate contractor and no just taxed in Australia. We have a tax treaty with USA and as long as perform no work activities on USA soil then IRS isn’t involved. They just pay you gross and responsible for your own tax and super (optional but given the beneficial tax treatment best to put something in)

The answer is, anything if you are good at it / know how to market yourself. Most commonly healthcare / IT / engineering / law / finance subsets. If you are good at your job / have a good business brain a lot of tradies will make that too, with a lot of grey cash in hand money.

What you want to know is what job has the highest % of salary of above 300k, then you look at the difficulty in getting into that field / training and competitiveness involved. otherwise these threads are as useful as a monkey's ass

    • Fun fact (ok not really fun)

      • Monkey News!

    • At this point, think easiest money is if your a allied health professional (physio or OT or similar) and got a few friends together in same field and start a company. Wont make 300k, but realistically each person would be making 10-20k for the business a month thanks to huge shortages and NDIS funding.

  • $300k is not uncommon in WA iron ore mining - and most effectively only work half a year. For that, you need hypercritical in demand skills. A mining superintendent (department head essentially) will often be in the $400-500k bracket or more. Mine managers? Who knows but it will be mega. The guys on the Sunrise floating LNG platform easily make that

    • +1

Don't neg. There are train drivers in the Pilbarra making 4-500k right now. I kid you not.

      • Yeah and they're picky who they want too, I've heard they favour ex-city rail dudes.

        • Wouldn’t surprise me. Government training is usually top notch. CityRail was always a class above all others. It’s why Qantas used to poach airforce pilots. Typical private company attitude- let the taxpayer spend the money training people and then just offer a tad more and steal people. Leeches

      • I rarely neg - it's a tool for losers.

I knew they were in demand but not to that degree. Rio Tinto's driverless train project has had real problems so they still need drivers.

        • I'm not talking about you.
Your comment was negged before. I was saying, your commend shouldn't be negged because it's factual.

The real correct answer are roles where you don't trade your time for money via getting a cut of the profits & using leverage such as capital, labour or land & you get judged finally for your performance (ie. increase revenue = more money). Roles like this are:

    • CEOs
    • startup founders
    • financial traders
    • early startup employees with equity / stock options
    • investors / property developers

Most jobs will cap out at 200k because most salaries must be a certain multiple below a company's revenue (or it runs out of cash). eg. it makes sense for the Big 4 to pay 200K+ salaries because they can afford to & its staff are able to generate "value" that exceeds their paid salaries.

    • So…. Start with money or get lucky?

      • +1

Luck definitely pays a part. But I seen really poor people rise from the bottom so its possible to achieve that. A maths genius in a 3rd world country isn't going to be rich no matter how much he tries because there's no opportunities there in the first place unless he moved over to Wall St.

The benefit of Aus is that you can be relatively dumb and earn a lot (but you won't be infinitely rich) doing a trade or working in the mines.

        • Luck definitely pays a part. But I seen really poor people rise from the bottom so its possible to achieve that. A maths genius in a 3rd world country isn't going to be rich no matter how much he tries because there's no opportunities there in the first place unless he moved over to Wall St.

He doesn't need to move to Wall St; he can move to any (super) fast developing economy (China, India, Brazil to name a few) and make his fortune there. Gone are those days when money was only made at Wall St. Look at the incomes of employees in well paid industries in these countries and you will be surprised.

  • Start a business?

  • Investment banking and private equity are sure way to make >$300k. But I would rather be software eng at google/Canva at ~200k with better lifestyle

Engineers at big tech companies (Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Atlassian etc) make 200k-400k locally pending level of seniority.

SWE/SRE managers typically make 400k+ with a mix across base, bonus and stocks.

Outside FANGs, IT cloud consulting or sales roles typically pulls 200k+ either on vendor side or at large enterprises with public cloud strategies

      • +1

Yep that sounds right. The ceiling is higher in finance, top dogs make $1-5m and junior directors/ senior VPs make ~$600k-900k but obviously utility of money becomes lot lower. Many MDs I know are encouraging their kids to go in comp sci so I think no one disagrees that tech is better place to be.

      • Yeah nah, most of the Microsoft PFE's I know/have worked with are on less than $200k including bonus. However, the good bit is they can salary sacrifice buying MSFT stocks and that's a bit of cash there. I feel sorry for them with the hours they've worked or constantly being flown around the place. There's easier way to make $ than that.

        • +1

I had to look up what a PFE is, seems like it's more of a support role and I'm assuming the OP was referring to SWEs/SDEs salaries which is where the money is. For instance, I recently had a chat with an Atlassian tech recruiter for a SWE role who said the starting salary for mid level is 150k + 10% bonus + 100k USD stock (4 year vesting) which comes out to about 200k TC.
