hmm.. i just got the same 10kg from coles on monday for $10 as well… damn duopoly.. they are just taking turns giving out 'offers' just like the banks now. :/

    • its what they do. suppliers give the same rebate for all

last week is medium grain, this week is long grain, but imo, they both not really taste good, try jasmine, they are perfect!

    • +1

      +1 cannot compare with jasmine.

    • IMO: both the long grain and short grain are tasteless. Their jasmine are much better but you should still be better off getting Asian branded rice when these are not on sales.

Some/most Sunrice branded rice is Australian, so even if you do think asian brands taste better it's still worth considering Sunrice to support Australian farmers. Also because the rice hasn't spent months on ships with a big opportunity for pests to get into it.

        • +1

Good point you make there, secondly from an environmental perspective it's better to buy locally. The environment cost to ship rice all over the world is something that's difficult to measure. People in China buy rice from Australia due to the higher confidence in the quality control in Australia and lack of trust in the locally produced goods.

Are you sure? As I understand some are imported but brand Sunrice.

Those Sunrice years ago is a lot better.

        • +1

@haz, but isn't there an environmental impact of growing rice here? ie. irrigation/water use. Does the environment cost of shipping outweigh that?

I have wondered this before. :)

        • Only thing was, it tasted so bland and dry that I could only eat it with lots of curries, or I just can't make myself eat it. So that 5 kg pack actually lasted me 3~4 months while I ate the other brand on normal occasion.

I wouldn't mind paying more for Australian rice but there was significant difference in taste.

So far the best taste/value I've had were the 10kg short grain from Costco.

        • i think you are just being brand picky like an asian. ;)

rice is rice, it's not how it was made, but how it was cooked.

cook it right, you can get cheap nasty broken rice to taste better than a Niigata domestic grown.

Actually the Product of Thailand Sunrice variants are dry and tasteless. The Aussie variant has always been great.

This is coming from an Asi0n :P

Sun Rice should market their 5kg or 10kg Sushi Rice through Coles.

Its the only Aussie grown Sushi Rice and is gr8.

    • +1

On the subject of sushi. Anyone know where you can pick up nori sheets that aren't made in China. Don't get me wrong, I am not hating on China but the fact that the Chinese try to buy offshore is an indictment on the quality of food produced in the country.

All the brands seem to have moved to China

      • True you would probably have to import directly from Japan/Korea to get Japanese/Korean made nori.

      • ask at japan/korea run shops… they do import domestic ones, but don't expect to pay chinese prices alright?

      • Given their penchant for Melamine Laced Dairy, Carcinogen Laced Veges and Motor Oil Laced Toothpaste, I see no reason to hate on Mainland Chinese Food.

  • is long grain soft or hard rice

    • +3

it's soft when cooked, and hard when raw…just kidding :P
It's "harder/drier" than the short grain I reckon

      • I like my rice and prefers jasmine rice from thailand but thought I would give RunRice another go and it was a huge disappointment. Hard, dried, and no flavour. Thankfully, my chooks didn't mind them or else they would be hard to swallow for the next 3 months.

        • Hehe yer I get my rice "from Thailand" too (at least that's what it says on the bag).

        • … but made in China?

      • You know, the best rice I've tasted are from Taiwan!! They are EXPENSIVE!! (eg. 10kg for about $30) But just try to buy one and u will see it's worth it. Apparently Taiwan has been exporting a lot of their rice to japan, who are known to be choosy with food/rice! :)

  • oh man what am i going to store it in?

    • It comes in a bag :P
