Starting Course on Monday, Where to Buy PPE Items

A family member is starting the course Certificate III in Cabinet Making, on Monday.

Below is the advisory from college:

Students will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when undertaking practical activities and attending site visits.

The personal protective equipment and course materials students will be required to supply are:
- Safety boots (steel capped, ankle height)
- Safety pants
- Work shirt (waist length jacket, if cold)
- Safety glasses
- Ear protection AS1270 (Earmuffs)
- Hat for sun protection
- Sunscreen (if exposed to sunlight)
- Gloves (Level 5 Cut Resistant Gloves)

  • Notebook
  • Blue or black pen/biro
  • HB Pencil
  • Eraser Steel Tape (Metric 3m/5m)
  • 150mm Steel Ruler
- Chisels 1 of each (6mm, 12mm, 25mm)

The college says total cost of these items is between $400 - $800.

I am helping this family member with these costs and am running low on funds.

I know of only Bunnings to buy such items. Is there any other store/option to source these items at lesser prices?

Thank you very much.

There are plenty work colthing/hardware stores around that could cater to your needs better than Bunnings.

    Just google it

After looking at that list again, i would be surprised to see you go over $400 unless you went for some high end stuff.

The most expensive thing would be the boots if you got some good ones ($200ish)
To save some cash you can get mega cheap good workwear from op shops. Otherwise its $30-80ish per clothing item new.

BigW/Target/Kmart all have cheap safety equipment. Would be fine for a learners course but wouldn't depend my life on them on a construction site.

There are also safety equipment specialised shops. Just search on maps in your area.

  • P.s. I'm in Melbourne West.

Don't buy anything too Glam or it will be knocked off.

Left it a bit late. When did they get notified that they were accepted?

    • Thursday EOD

Google hardware places in your suburb and see if they are open in the morning and get there when they open to buy the stuff. You will not get the cheapest as cheap places do not open on Sunday's.

  • +1

The college (or the teacher) will know exactly where to get this stuff for cheap (and that's of acceptable quality). Your family member is not the first, and won't be the last, student with a low-budget to do this course.

    • +2

Unless the teacher is getting kickbacks.

  • Boots, pants and shirt could all easily be picked up somewhere cheap like big W if you wanted new.

Tools , hearing and eye protection could be easily sourced at Bunnings.(even boots can be relatively cheap at Bunnings )

No need for fancy level gear for a training course.

Students will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when undertaking practical activities and attending site visits.

bit late but call the collage, chances are first week won't have any practical activities or attending sites. you would expect a few days of safety videos etc. you might get away with it later in the week

  • For the Stationary, try officeworks.
For the clothing, try Totally Workwear or Big W / KMart (if you want home brand quality)
For the PPE stuff, try Total Tools and Sydney Tools and Bunnings obviously.

All these companies have online sites which will allow you to compare prices online before pencilling down the shopping list and heading out to get it.

Try this place op. Should have all you need. And is based out in west Melb. On Ballarat rd.

Then walk a few doors down and get lunch at Hop and Spice.

Starting Course on Monday, Where to Buy PPE Items

Leaving it a little late, not much going to be open now other than Bunnings.

join a facebook group like cabinet makers australia to see if anyone locally has any unused tools to yeet/sell cheap/beer?

if its a cert 3 dont they already have an employer lined up to send them there or is it group training? still would of thought employer would have to supply ppe.

    • because you gotta be employed as an apprentice to be able to do the cert III

  • RSEA

  • Bunnings? They will have most of not all that stuff.

  • You can get cheap safety boots at big w. Pants and shirt, check out savers or similar before standard retailers. Gloves and safety face wear, prob just go to Bunnings.

    What are safety pants?
At my work safety pants is a colloquial term for either proban pants or reflective night works pants.

Does the work shirt need to be hi-vis? A lot of tafe modules require hi-vis and not just a work shirt.

I use all of that stuff for work and I would suggest Bunnings for almost all of it. For work shirts I prefer the long sleeve polos, Aldi were the best quality/value but Kmart are also good. The cheap Bata boots at Bunnings are actually quite durable and comfortable.

You can get everything for close to $100 just shopping at Bunnings and Kmart. All the products below meet the required specs (there are cheaper at Bunnings that aren't measured to Australian standards). You could even go a bit cheaper if you were willing to drive around to other stores. Eg, Ear muffs and CR5 gloves can be found for about $10 each.

    Total: $121

I've assumed he probably already has a hat and basic stationery at home.

    • Those safety pants might require a longer inseam…

Has society lost the ability to consult Google, or is it straight to the forums first???

    • I might ask that question on Gooogle?🤯

      • You could and then you don't need to type anything.

        • You might need to turn your sarcasm filter back on, old chum.

If you don’t know how you could always Gooooooogle it.

  • KMart or BigW for boots, pants and shirts (and hat and sunscreen - though I'm not sure a cabinet maker often works outside so probably just take an old baseball cap to start!)
Officeworks for Notebook, Blue or black pen/biro, HB Pencil [NB if he later needs "Carpenters Pencils" then get those at bunnings]

Bunnings for everything else - Safety glasses, Ear protection AS1270 (Earmuffs), Gloves (Level 5 Cut Resistant Gloves), 150mm Steel Ruler, Chisels 1 of each (6mm, 12mm, 25mm) and Eraser Steel Tape (Metric 3m/5m)

HINT - as he's only just starting the course and you say you are on a budget then consider getting the cheapest of all of them as he can upgrade the ones he finds he uses regularly to specific ones s/he finds best at a later date.
Except the Tape - ideally take an old second hand one to start until he knows what he will use it for and then get a good Stanley heavy duty one (cheap ones will stop retracting properly and the end will get knocked so go out of alignment on the end - and they do them with mm on top and bottom or mm on bottom and inches on top. By getting the one he finds he will use will be much better long term (if he has inches but never uses it then he will constantly be turning the tape around, but if you buy mm on top and bottom now then he won't have inches should the course ever teach anything in inches as some old fashoned sizing is still measured in inches).
