Surface Pro 8 or 7

Bought a surface pro 8 i5 16GB / 256GB Storage for $1518. I can claim GST on this one, which brings the price down to $1378. No Pen / Keyboard included.

I also have someone offering me their Surface Pro 7 - i7 16GB for $800 but comes with Pen(older model) and Keyboard.

My primary use for it is note-taking and a bit of browsing and multi-tasking. Occasionally I might code on this one, but more likely to use the Mac Studio / Laptop for everyday use.

I feel like the new screen and extra real estate are a plus for S Pro 8. I liked the S Pro 8 screen and pen feel but not sure if $1378 is worth it or should I just stick to S pro 7 and potentially upgrade in the future?

What would you do if you were in this situation?

  • whatever on sale NOW if you need it NOW if not then dont buy

    • Both are on sale NOW… the price is enticing for both and do I need it right away… Nah, I can survive with pen and paper but the tablet is nicer addition. With so many to study and a constant need to take notes for different subjects and discussions, I struggle a bit with pen and paper even with tags and sticky notes. so a tablet will make life easier.

  • you already have the pro 8? if so, i would just keep it, if you return it and buy the 7, you might find that you miss the 8. if you haven't already got it, go for the 7

    • Yes, bought the pro 8 but haven't opened it yet because of the S7 offer. Honestly, I haven't used SPro 7 but just played with SPro 8 at the store and kinda liked it.

All I know is the real estate of the SPro 7 is lesser and has an older model pen while the SPro 8 looked nicer with a small bezzel with a newer pen and less jitter.

  • I have a pro7 256g 16gb with pen and surface keyboard. It's perfect. I would not pay the extra money if 2 were in front of me at the same time. Pro 7 is d e cent enough to do what I want and once you have it you won't worry about smaller bezel or anything like that.

    • If I may ask… What do you use it for? Is the note-taking better on it? I don't intend to draw on it full-time as I am not an artist but the reviews I see usually mention it is jittery with the older version of the surface pen and makes it difficult for note-taking to some extent.

I write notes, use non game related software office, acrobat, video editing software and generally faff around! I guess I have nothing to compare the pen with as I have never used an 8 and the wife has a pro 6 but it's never really caused me any problems

    Reviews can be very selective.

The keyboards are crap expensive too so you are probably looking at double the price or more before you even add the pen. That's a lot more cash for relying on reviews

The 7 has good resale value at $800 if you don't like it. Why not give it a go?

    I’d wait for the 9

Surface 8 if you want a semi-desktop useable computer. Surface7 if you just want the tablet.

You could also look at it this way: is 0.7 inches worth $578? That's the difference of screen real estate between the P7 and the P8. From the looks of your use case, it seems to me the P7 is enough for what you need to do.

But you also didn't tell us the storage capacity of the P7. Remember, you can upgrade the storage of the P8 via the removable SSD; whereas you cannot upgrade the storage of the P7 (at least without a lot of work and potential damage to the screen).

Surface 8s almost double the price, stick with 7 as it'll do exactly what you need it to do and put the extra cash in savings for another ozbargain purchase later
