Can anyone chime in on their experience with Scoot?

    • +4

Can't be as bad as virgin or jetstar where your flight has a 50/50 odds of getting cancelled

    • +3

My return flight got cancelled (a month before the trip) and I got put on a flight that returns 4 days later instead. So.. I dunno. Extended my holiday I guess.

      • Likewise, my return leg got cancelled without me being told about it, even had emails reminding me of my booking…paid an expensive one way ticket back - but the flight itself was fine

    • +5

Barely any service, quite barebones economy / premium economy. Flight from SG To Syd had no in-flight entertainment. A slog to europe would probably make me completely change my view of money and when to spend it

      • I did Perth to Paris for $600 return with Air Asia back in the day - used my phone and brought some books to read, job done

    • +9

They had 150ml water that was $10. They don't give out free water on the flight. They also took off all the headrests pillows from the seats and charge you for those extra too.

I flew with them for free and I probably wouldn't do it again.

      • +10

        LOL

      • Far out, do you have to bring your own seats too?

        • If they could get you standing up like a bus, or cram people into the cargo hold, I'm sure they'd be the first airline to do so. I'm betting their oxygen masks would be pay to use too lol.

But $600 is $600 - if you are desperate to go as cheap as possible that is remarkably cheap. But definitely bring a pillow, enough water for the whole flight, and snacks or even meals (if that's allowed through international security?)

Went with Scoot return from MEL to ATH last month.

In summary it gets you from A to B, and anything else you want you pay extra for (this include in seat charging and water). Our ATH to SIN leg was delayed by an hour or so but we didn't miss our connection, but the rest were on time.

No IFE which was fine as we loaded up a tablet with TV shows.

Scoot say you can't BYO food and drink onto the plane but we didn't see that enforced at all. We brought our own food, including topping up at the 7-eleven in Singapore airport. There's fountains in the gate area in Singapore Airport (after you pass the security at the gate) to fill your water bottles. In flight meals are pricey and look like microwave meals.

In-seat charging is an additional extra.

Most of the seats don't have adjustable headrests like mentioned. The seats themselves I didn't find too bad.

Return cost us about $800 each, with the cheapest flight with a full service airline at the time more than double the price.

    • They are just ok. Their flights are always delayed when flying out from Australia while everywhere else pretty much on time.

Food is horrible, but as someone here mentioned you can bring your own food. They are not stopping you unlike AirAsia.

If your flight has been cancelled, the will only offer a refund or credit, no alternative flight offer. Don't contact them via live chat for this case they will force you to pay the difference. Grab a call, they will rebook a new flight for you.

      Long haul in Singapore

(profanity) already booked and taken leave for a couple weeks earlier

These fares come with all sorts of conditions, and unless you're retired and time is no bother, then I would steer clear.

    • +6

It's just typical LCC conditions - everything costs extra, fare is non-refundable etc
I don't see any additional conditions on these fares

I don't know why people are complaining so much. Jetstar will cost you the same amount of money to fly Melbourne to NT or Perth. Scoot is taking you across the ditch.

It's $300 one way, Scoot is a low budget airlines where you have to pay for everything. Caters for price conscious people.

    • price conscious people

Isn’t everyone price conscious? Even the super rich would have a willingness to pay for items they’re purchasing. If you were going to buy Twitter for example.

      • +2

It's a relative term. I am heading to Europe later this year and I am okay paying 2k on a full service flight but there would be people who wouldn't want to, that's when services like scoot comes in.

They can put that saved money towards spending money.

  • id be tempted to do this with a 3 year toddler and 1 year old baby … looking going there at the times, yeah could get away with it but then coming back, oh that 22 hour stop over at singapore will be a bitch

yes i'v heard you can go out but sucks that you can't align it as a multi trip so then you can try to do some days in singapore before coming back to sydney
plus the arrival into singapore is like 2am and then leaving is 3am … gosh no way with my toddler/baby lol

  • +4

Just came back from Greece, stayed in an all inclusive hotel called… Golden Coast…flew with Scoot, no issues at all. All EU carriers check-ins were overcrowded while scoot was quick and well organised both in Athens, Singapore and GC. Those who complain on low cost carriers are welcome to fly SQ, EK, QR etc for a family of 4 or 5 it's gonna cost 10 grand or more during summer/autumn in Europe.

    • May I know how's the safety in Greece, heard about there might be some gang robbery in Athens?

  • +2

Did it five years ago, would do it again. Usually fly business on points to Europe, but would hit this up in a pinch.

Taking your own food, tablet, filling up an empty bottle and travelling light are really not hard nor worth paying an extra $1000+ for full service economy. Worth doing this for any long haul economy if you can.

Would rather spend the savings on experiences at the destination or stay somewhere nicer.

  • How's Greece to travel on a student budget once you get there? Good country to backpack on the cheap?

    • +1

Of course. The whole Europe is cheap to backpack

    • -1

While America has a lot of mass shootings, it's across a population of 300m people. The chances you'll get caught up in one are pretty low - particularly if you're a cautious/sensible traveller as you seem to be. I've always felt pretty safe travelling there, last time 2019.

To be honest, I would find Taiwan riskier than a lot of South East Asian countries like you mention. You sound like you do your research and I doubt you'd be thrown in jail for no reason in Vietnam. But to check in any destination is their level of covid restrictions, not every country is as blase about covid as we are, and a holiday with relatively heavy restrictions wouldn't be the most enjoyable.

Agreed I think it has slipped people's minds that Europe is a continent at war, and it's literally just one small action away from escalating.

It's important that people who are travelling there are keeping up to date with the news, and imo travelling to only NATO countries. It wouldn't take much for a non-NATO country to get drawn into the conflict, but NATO countries would be devestating even over here in Australia.

However - NATO countries, particularly in the west, are safe at this point in time. They're not at war at this stage. I think that people travelling there should be absolutely ready to pay a premium to leave Europe on a whim though, and remain alert. By the time it's "recommended" not to travel there, you'll find it very difficult to leave, particularly in a cost effective way.
Things can easily escalate within a day - this is not a theoretical situation.

I wouldn't travel there if I didn't have a decent emergency savings available right now - and I've done it on a shoestring before.

      • to be honest, I would find Taiwan riskier than a lot of South East Asian countries like you mention. You sound like you do your research and I doubt you'd be thrown in jail for no reason in Vietnam. If you are in the anti CCP camp (i am). Then it is risky to go to ASEAN countries as CCP police are know to operate in these countries. Thailand is one know to the work but same for all their ASEAN brother and sisters. That is why I am not going near any of those countries soon.

BTW I am extremely interested in the amount of negs! no doubt there are little pinks and blue zombies, but I guess some Europeans don't like me calling their are war zone or some Yankees dont like me call America dangerous?

        • Personally I reckon you're overstating the risk in countries like Vietnam or Thailand - of course anything can go wrong anywhere, but keeping your wits about you goes a long way.

RE the negs, I think most Aussies have a very cavalier attitude and don't want to think about any risks until they are so real they are stuck in a country.

Take covid for example - there was a good month or two of pretty clear warnings you'll have problems getting around, and then it hit a point where you actually still could return, it'd just set you back 10k. But many were stuck. So many were in this position, many because they couldn't think ahead or didn't think the risks are real.

I personally think you're being a little overcautious for the current situation - there are places other than Europe to travel. But at the same time, I am in a position where I could spend 10k for flights home if necessary in an emergency, so having that safety net helps. I do think that many are on the opposite scale where they forget Europe is a continent at war, and couldn't even tell you the situation while backpacking on a dime mere kms away from it. Dunno if they'd make the same decision during the peak of Afghanistan next door in the middle east (maybe they would!)

Perhaps travelling to places domestically in Australia, or NZ, might be more appropriate for you?

  • add the $260 baggage and the one I just looked at was $823 one way, which is god for this late booking but not amazing

Tried pricing up ex-MEL for November - with bags, food, and seat selection was $1055 return

Probably still $1k saving vs full service

What is Scoot like for legroom? Are their planes suitable for those over 6' tall? I flew Turkish Airlines from Asia to Istanbul a few years ago and my knees were touching the seat in front from the second I sat down. Worst flight I've ever done in 20 years of international travel. I could never do something like that again

I'm a tad under 6'4. I don't fit in the seat, get told not to have legs in the aisle, and sorta gotta stretch them to each side and lift up. Totally non functional.
I ended up getting off at Singapore and not getting back on for the other leg instead buying an SQ flight to Berlin at a ridiculous on-the-spot price.
A plane crash would have been favourable to the Singapore-Berlin part.

    • 31 inches which is fairly standard for international. 34 inch seats which include headrests on the AUS<->SIN routes cost about $25-30 for each leg of the flight however these cost about $60 on the flight to Athens which is a solid 11.5 hours of flying. So you could be paying up to $180 in total for a return flight with the better seats.

There are occasionally $1-1.1k return flights via Singapore Airlines which gets you 32 inches of pitch and a substantially better flying experience. But it would still be cheaper to fly with scoot and pay for the 34 inches of seat pitch.

You have to pay extra for seat selection anyways so if you were gonna do that then the extra cost for 34 inches isn't as bad. For those AUS <-> SIN flights it ends up being like $10 over standard seat selection.

      • When we travelled there were certain seats on the 787-9 used for AUS <-> SIN (row 32/33, seats A-C and H-K from memory) that are 33-34" pitch with adjustable headrest available for standard seat selection prices.

        • 6'2 and just booked a trip to greece and didnt spend $15 for seat selection. Couldnt see any options for more leg room…

@mavis30551: You should still be able to modify your booking for no additional cost, including seat selection. The commenter above pointed out the cheapest row with extended legroom.

I've done similar flights before on low cost carriers, it's really not that bad. You just need to have the right expectations and be prepared. Before boarding eat a big meal and buy water/snacks/sandwich at the gate. Load up your phone or tablet with entertainment. Bring a neck pillow, thick sweater and NC headphones. Shitty flight meals, a few drinks and in-flight entertainment are not worth ~$1000+ to me, I rather spend it at my destination.

    • I agree if prepare like a boy scout then there is no problem

  • Is there any way to extend the layover in Singapore for an extra day or two with these tickets?

  • How is Scoot for safety?
