Car Mechanic Messed up The Car While Trying to Repair

I was facing engine misfire in my jaguar xf. Got in touch with national warranty team. They asked me to goto their authorised repairer.

I drove my car to the shop in driveable condition. Owner of the repair shop tried to fix the issue but couldn't, because of not knowing how to deal with super-charged engines.

Now car doesn't move an inch. I suspect that mechanic messed up something while trying his luck to fix.

He is now insisting me to tow car to jaguar showroom mechanic.

What should I do in this situation?

    Call National Warranty Team (again).

    • -3

Do you think they can do anything about it?

      • +60

Probably more than randoms on an internet forum.

        • +3

          But it's a Jaguar.

          • +2

@SF3: OP should have taken Ford dealer… It is built on the Ford DEW98 platform ;)

          • -1

            @SF3: Jaguars have always sucked

OP has only themselves to blame

        • -1

          Source?

          • +2

            @iDroid: Easy. Just Google.
            I did.
            Very interesting.

            • -1

@azonki: I searched for "Probably more than randoms on an internet forum." but really wasn't that interesting…

Why do we get such DUMB questions from L posters?

The mechanic has told our "L" poster what to do already

    • -1

      Who is National Warranty Team?????????????????

Oh dear..OP took out a cheap and cheerful warranty that uses cheap and chearful mechanics…ooops !

  • -1

If its a misfire the guy should just be able to pull the injector/coil pack and replace though, just needs to take the supercharger off.

    Sounds like he cooked it.

    • Can you or someone you know fix it and claim the cost from National Warranty?

Jaguar's showroom mechnic is going to drain my pockets I suspect.

      I am western sydney based.

      • +1

If its outside of warranty then yes, that's the risk you run with Euro cars unfortunately.
Else if you're under warranty just take it to them. A misfire shouldn't be a wear and tear item unless it's had a long life.

I got burnt with an Audi, never touching them again. Equally with Jaguars (fords)

        • +2

Given they're claiming through an extended warranty, I'm going to hazard a guess that yes it's an older one

      • I'll fix it, pay me in Amazon gift cards

        • +2

I'll do it for doordash vouchers.

      • Jaguar's showroom mechnic is going to drain my pockets I suspect.

What did you expect when you bought an older JAG like that?

        • +1

Its 2015, 100k km on it. Have seen much older cars flying around here.

          • @syd-acn: If the memes are to be believed, a 100k euro-trashwagon is the equivalent of a 200k+ Japanese vehicle.
I’d take a 300k diesel hj75 or gq patrol over a 100k Jag if I had to drive across the country and back.

          • -1

@syd-acn: "have seen much older cars". Yeah they're not Jaguars though.

Euro cars aren't exactly known to hit 300k on the odometer

        • CORRECT!

  • Take to independent Jaguar specialist, will be a lot cheaper

get it assessed by someone who actually knows how the engine works and see what the previous mechanic did to it, you should be able to claim for damages if he managed to break the engine.

it sounds like it is still under some kind of warranty, though you'll have to follow up with them and tell them what their "authorised repairer" has done.

it might be worth getting in touch with someone who knows how laws around this work, as there may be some kind of loophole that absolves the shoddy mechanic of responsibility if you take it from his property, which might be why he is insisting you get it towed.

    • Its definitely in the 3 pages of terms and Conditions
Did OP even both to read the Tc and Cs ???

  • +7

Jaguar's warranty team asked you to take your car to their authorised repairer and their authorised repairer doesn't know how to repair your car?

Edit: Just realised 'National Warranty Team' isn't part of Jag, but a separate group that sells these shitty extended warranties.

    • +6

No the "national warranty team" who seem to be a third party warranty company.

      • +4

Yeh, I just realised. It all makes sense now! lol

Admittedly, I'm surprised that their reviews seem to be somewhat better than I was expecting.

  • +3

and that is why you won't ever see a jaguar xf at Ultratune, Kmart or MyCar.

  • +6

When you called the "national warranty team" to let them know what the situation is how did they respond/what did they say?

    • +17

Please post on ozbargain, it's our official support channel.

      • +1

Please hold (your call is important to us)

    • They asked me to goto their authorised repairer.

      That's OzB!

    • +2

OP didn't want to pay for phone call so hung up after one ring :D

  • +1

NWC closed after 5, will ring them up tomorrow.

Btw, got call from "authorised mechanic" saying that he has fixed the car, its in "same state" as it was drove into garage. Not sure what he "patched".

He is being nice, not asking for diagnosis charges as such. But tbh, he diagnosed nothing but his overconfidence of going beyond his powers.

I am still confused whether should I move car away from his workshop.

Jags workshop is going to eat away my next 10 ozbargain deals.

    • -1

What did you expect buying a Euro car?

There are plenty of stories about how expensive Euros are to maintain :/

      • +5

Expensive because some idiot buys it and assumes he can forgo oil changes like he did on his Corolla.

There are some duds, but others have a bad rep because of idiot buyers treating cars badly / buying from other idiots who treat cars badly. It’s common for cheap sports cars to be shagged, euro or jap

      • +3

They really aren't that much more expensive at all, providing you look after them and service them on time, and with well regarded independent specialists..

    • +2

I am still confused whether should I move car away from his workshop.

Jags workshop is going to eat away my next 10 ozbargain deals.

Damn, if only there were more than only these two options.

I am glad I left working for Jaguar. I don’t touch them for this exact reason. The only vehicle worse than a Jag is a Land Rover.

Shit box Euro (Indian Tata) car backed by a worthless aftermarket warranty that isn’t worth the paper it is printed on. I mean, this is a text book example for why we don’t buy used “prestige” vehicles in a single post.

You should hand your OzBargain license in and go sit in the corner with the BMW owner from a few days ago complaining about buying a battery and thinking it was expensive.

    • In this case, it is not a Tata, its from when Ford still owned Jag.

      • I think you will find that Tata have owned Jaguar and Land Rover since about some time in 2008. Ford sold off Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin and Volvo during or just after the GFC.

Trust me, in 2015, Jag was owned by Tata, ergo, it's a Tata.

Side note: I worked for LR and Jag when it was owned by Ford. Also when they were owned by BWM and by Rover Group. I missed out on the Tata ownership.

        • I think you're right, I saw supercharged and assumed it was XKR :)

    • +1

Its the savings from ozbargain that I've used to drive this beast.

I know its now beast's turn to drive me crazy.

  • +1

Jag/LRE can't even make new cars work properly, let alone used ones. And the TaTanic will throw you under the bus as soon as factory warranty expires.

  • What should I do in this situation?

    Hand in your ozb badge

  • any update?

  • any update?

  • NWC (National Warranty Company) mechanic fixed the car and was driveable again, without any charges.

Original issues of engine misfire and coolant leak diagnosed by Jaguar's dealership mechanic.

Just going to get misfire fixed from Jaguar. I am pushing Jaguar dealership to claim expense from NWC. They reluctantly agreed. Ball is in NWC court now.

Will look for Jaguar expert outside dealership to change water pump (cause of coolant leak).
