Handheld retro game consoles have been having a surge of popularity recently and Powkiddy have this Android-based retro clamshell game console that offers a lot more power and features than the cheaper Linux-based ones. Plus it's a really low price as this almost never goes below US$170 ex GST.

Featuring a 5.5" IPS 720p touchscreen display, Android 1, clamshell design with sleep, physical controls including joysticks, dpad, shoulder buttons, triggers, ABXY, Select/Start, custom mapping etc, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage (microSD support), UNISOC T618 8-Core CPU, 5000mAh battery with USB-C, Mini HDMI output, dual speakers, 3.5mm jack and WiFi/Bluetooth.

Thanks to the powerful hardware in can handle a lot of emulators and game platforms up to 720p without issue. This includes the PSP, PS1, Dreamcast, Sega Saturn, Gameboy, Nintendo DS, N64 games and more. Android games and Xbox/PC game streaming works well too. For emulators like RetroArch you can enable Run Ahead to reduce input lag thanks to the powerful CPU.

It runs Android 11 with a custom skin that has received a few updates to fix issues since release. I find it looks a lot better with a launcher like ATV that displays everything in tiles similar to Android TV. Alternatively there's a LineageOS custom ROM already available that improves the experience a lot.

  • Recently got an Android tablet anyone know how to run emulators and where to get the best one and games?

Typically you choose the platform you want to game on, e.g. Gameboy, find the ROMs for the games, load them onto an SD card or tablet internal storage, run an emulator app like RetroArch and go from there.

I can recommend checking out Retro Game Corps. He has a written guide and video that's quite indepth on getting started.

      • Thanks mate, whilst I have you any joystick or joy pad recommendations. I've got the lenovo pad pro

          buy an xbox controller

          • -1

@SlowCarSlow: strongly disagree for retro gaming. Xbox has always had terrible d-pads and that's the one thing you want to get right for a retro system.

Get a PS4/PS5 or a Switch Pro controller. Or an 8bitdo sn30pro. Basically anything except an xbox controller

            • @Odin: If you find an Xbox controller dpad to be bad for retro gaming, how are you finding a PS controller one to be in any way acceptable?

            • -2

@Odin: Lol, PlayStation controller. No one recommends the PlayStation controllers for their Dpads.

              • @choodi: Are you guys serious? Maybe we're in very different circles but the PS4 controller is held in extremely high regard for it's dpad.

Look at 2d fighting game tournaments. There's two controllers you'll see:

                Fight sticks and PS4 controllers.

                • -1

@Odin: No one would recommend a PS4 controller over an 8bitdo SN30Pro2 for retro games.

                  • @choodi: For fighting games they absolutely would.

But anyway, specifically for retro gaming, I didn't. I recommended three controllers for retro gaming

                    • PS4/ps5
                    • Switch pro
                    • 8bitdo

It's right there in the above post.
