Aw Snap Error - Can't Sign in to Gmail, YouTube and Can't Access Some Other Sites

Hi All

So since last week, I'm getting an error while trying to log in to Gmail, Chrome, Youtube, Wikipedia etc.
Other pages including Ozbargain, etc are all fine.
The login page is displayed briefly, and then turns to Aw Snap! Something went wrong while displaying this webpage. The error code listed is Error code: STATUS_IN_PAGE_ERROR

Tried opening gmail from the Edge browser, but still the same error. This page is having a problem. Try coming back to it later. Error code: STATUS_IN_PAGE_ERROR

I've tried:

Clearing cache, browsing data, clearing cookies
Incognito Window
No extensions in Chrome
Restarted computer
Chrome is latest update
Checked for unwanted software
Created new profile in Chrome

Tried to download firefox from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ but it comes up with the Aw Snap error as well.

I can access all these on my phone without an issue but not on the computer.

Can someone please suggest something?

DNS issues? Consider swapping to 1.1.1.1

    https://www.cloudflare.com/en-au/learning/dns/what-is-1.1.1.…

    • Just tried it and it's still the same.
Making sure what you meant was changing the chrome settings under privacy and security and then selecting Use secure DNS with CloudFlare.

      This didn't change anything.

Do yourself a favour…. try brave browser

    https://brave.com/

    no joke

    Also use duckduckgo.com for search

    no joke

    • Thanks mate

Getting the same Aw snap error on the brave browser page too.

  • will be interested to hear the solution. My sister's dell xps was doing this in 2020. It used to work intermittently tho which doesn't seem to be the case for you.

Have you tried hotspotting your computer from your phone then trying to access the page?

    • Thanks mate.

Tried it but it has made no difference.

      • Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Click on Network Reset. Run that then retry.

        • Doing this now.
It said computer will shut down in 5 mins, will let you know.

          • @deveshwar0: It's restarted but the problem still persists.

            • @deveshwar0: Ok well at least you know from the hotspot test that the issue is on your computer and not with your internet connection. Have you updated Windows or installed anything recently?

  • Open up command prompt

Are you able to ping to any of the websites that you are having issues browsing to?

    open cmd
    ping www.gmail.com

Is your version of Windows fully updated?

    • Pinging www.gmail.com with 32 bytes of data
      Pink statistics
      Packets sent 4, received 4 lost 0
      Approximate round trip times
      Minimum 31ms, maximum 62ms, average 43 ms

      • So it is able to view webpages, but not when there is a secure connection or need to log in involved?

Is your windows up to date?

        • Yes, windows is updated.
This is what I'm getting when pinging from home network rather than the mobile hotspot.

Pinging www.gmail.com [142.250.70.197] with 32 bytes of data:
          Reply from 142.250.70.197: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=58
          Reply from 142.250.70.197: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=58
          Reply from 142.250.70.197: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=58
          Reply from 142.250.70.197: bytes=32 time=4ms TTL=58

          Ping statistics for 142.250.70.197:
          Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
          Minimum = 2ms, Maximum = 4ms, Average = 2ms

          • @deveshwar0: Sounds like some issue with the security certs needed by websites you are trying to log into.

Can't diagnose it from here, suffice to say I'd recommend a backup of files and format.

  • Reset modem?

    • Yep, done that already

  • We seem to be having ISP issues at work this morning with Aussie Broadband.
After disconnecting the DSL connection, and running solely from our backup connection, our issues appear to have been resolved.

ABB have no issue recorded for our POI on their outages page.

    • I'm not with ABB and this problem has been ongoing for over a week now.

      • +1

On flicking through the ABB Whirlpool Outages thread, it seems ABB had DNS issues earlier this morning.

If your ISP has a dedicated section on Whirlpool, it might be worth checking for similar issues there.

  • Is the time zone settings on your computer set correctly?

    • Date and time are correct

  • Needs resetting the ISP end. I had the same issue random sites would work and others like ebay wouldn't. Tried running a speed test and that didn't even run…..

    • I'm able to run a speed test and that's coming up good.
Also just tried to login to Gmail using a friend's computer on the same network and that's fine, so this looks to be an issue with my computer.

      • Assuming you're on Windows, Open a Command Prompt window
        and run
        ipconfig /flushdns

        • Tried it but no change.

  • Edge and Chrome are both now "Chrome" based so it's possible the same underlying issues exists. I'd try removing all extensions from Chrome and maybe running task/resource manager when trying to access these pages see if chrome is pegging some resource out.

    • I would not have a clue on what to look out for.
There seems to be many things going on constantly in the resource manager.

  • Maybe uninstall Chrome (and all other browsers) completely then reinstall Chrome?

Perhaps also install all available Windows updates?

    • I can't get into downloading any browser as they all come up with the same Aw snap error for the download page.
Just concerned that if I remove them, then how will I get the installation files.

      Windows are up to date.

Download Firefox from the Microsoft Store.
Or download the offline installer to your phone and then transfer the installer file to your PC by USB.

          Fantastic.
I couldn't go to the Firefox download page from a browser but got it using the Microsoft store as an app.
Am able to login to Gmail on this so all good.
Will now uninstall edge and chrome and do a fresh install to try and see how that goes.
Is there anything that I should manually delete after uninstalling? Like are there any leftover bits that might still linger in the background?

          • @deveshwar0: So weird, I expected the MS Store to fail cause it most likely uses Edge in the background anyway.

Can;t comment on your other question sorry. Time for some searching to eliminate all vestiges

  • 1 See javascript and Cookies settings
    2 try different browser
    3. Try restarting your device
    4. Try restarting the the internet modem
    5. See if using mobile data or other wifi connection works
    6. You need a serious help, hackers got into your system

    • +1

1 through 5 have given no result.
What is working is the Firefox browser now that I got as an app from the Microsoft store.

      6 :((

  • I can access all these on my phone without an issue but not on the computer.

Does it still work on the phone when connected to your wifi network?

    • Yes, working fine on the phone and another machine. Just seems to be an issue with this computer.

    • Tried it but it didn't work.

  • I've had this issue but on Linux. Corrupted my Firefox install somehow so some pages would randomly crash. Sounds like the browser engine is tanking. Could be a plugin like NoScript blocking all JS (unlikely) or the browser is cooked (more likely). Remove Chrome, clean up the directories (not sure where), make sure computer is up-to-date and maybe do a disk scan, then reinstall and try again. Definitely sounds like computer problem

    • I've removed chrome and repaired Edge (Did not get an option to remove it), reinstalled Chrome but it's still not working on either.

      • Just saw you got it working on Firefox. One thing you can check in Chrome is the developer console and see what's failing (it might be failing to load a resource or erroring out).

To be honest, these big sites (mainly Google) have so many weird and obscure security requirements that they may have just blocked your entire machine for being "malicious". PayPal refuses to let me log in with a Linux device even though I prove my identity by logging in, verifying the email, putting in the OTP from my app, putting in the code from my phone, doing 100 captchas - it's just insane.

        • Doing a malware scan now to see if anything comes up and will then try and look at development console, though I might not find what I'm looking for. I'm not from IT background so only have a functional knowledge.

        • Tried opening developer console but it comes up with an error saying 'Dev tools was disconnected from the page. Once page is reloaded, Dev tools will automatically reconnect'.
          Refreshing does nothing.

          • @deveshwar0: Incredibly bizarre. I've never heard of that happening. It's unfortunate but a format and reinstall of Windows might be a solution you need to look at…

            • +1

@DreadPirateRoberts: Worth trying Chromium, Brave or Vivaldi to see if it's something Chromium based.

Alternatively, just continue to enjoy using Firefox and not having your every movement tracked by Google.

  • Surely a bizzaee thing, but does happen to me - different case - if I cannot fix it for a day or two, I will just install new windows.

Have you tried to check your startup programs and see anything strange software?

    • No, nothing untoward that I could find.

  • I had this symptom before and it was a failing hard drive. Have you tried downloading anything large to stress your hard drive?

Try downloading some large video file and then opening it. If it does not play properly and has artifacts, it means the drive is starting to fail.

You can also try download crystaldiskinfo, but I don't know if you know how to use that.

    • Sure, will try that.
Yes, I have no clue about crystaldiskinfo.

Have you tried creating a new user profile on the PC? ie. a completely new user environment.

    • No, haven't tried that and not too sure on trying it too.
Would I loose access to anything?

      • When I say profile I mean "account".

You shouldn't loose access to anything at all in your current profile/account because you're not changing anything there.
The idea here is that we're trying to isolate the fault by eliminating as many variables as possible. A new account will not carry a lot of the baggage that your current one has.

        • +2

          This is a good idea.

  • Have you tried disabling your virus scanner? Some of them try to protect you from websites and email, but can cause weirdness like you have seen.

    • +1

      Yes, still a no go.

  • Do you get the same issue when using chrome in incognito mode?

    • Yes, it's the same.

  • You don't have pi-hole install? Do you have any ad/virus program installed? Look at all the apps on your installed list and see if there's any app that's suspicious there.
